but in the case of Nigeria why did they allow the likes of Jahlil Okafor who has already played for Team USA youth team to play in the Olympic roster. Can someone confirm if all of those American-Nigerians had Nigerian passport before 16?
there was a special FIBA decision regarding this, which centers on the argument that the move to allow Nigeria to field a number of Nigerian-Americans is to advance the growth of basketball in the country. i think the same was done to Indonesia with some of their ineligibles.

FIBA's secretary general, Andreas Zagklis, can authorize a player to compete for his or her nation of origin if "this is in the interest of the development of basketball in this country."

diba? imagine if FIBA will also grant that type of carte blanche exemption to the Philippines, I doubt China, SKor and Iran would allow that. But they will turn a blind eye if Thailand and Vietnam will do this, since they are of no consequence to the East Asian powers and would make life difficult for Gilas in the region.

I'm still on the fence with Bolick, Juan, and RJ vs. Scottie, Castro and Terrence, though. The overseas guys are taller, but I dunno with better. Still better options than guys like Lee, Jalalon, Nambatac.
I've sour on Super ubo, Newsome and Perez are intriguing but inconsistent and are more of a luxury unlike the Bleague guys who are absolutely needed in our NT.

Castro and Terrence are washed already. Bolick is probably the best PG we have though I wouldn't be mad if you start Scottie over him ( in a perfect world he'd be our spark plug off the bench when JC sits). I'm high on RJ too and not so much on Juan

Well, Newsome & Perez aren't getting any younger. Newsome is 32 & Perez I think is 29 now. Our B-league wingmen on the other hand - Dwight, Heading & Thirdy are several years younger & still have room for improvement & their serviceable years with the national team are significantly longer. I know most posters here don't like Thirdy, but the fact that the guy has not yet reached his peak & is always available for Gilas duty makes him a good national team prospect.

Here's a thing about our Gilas prospects playing in the PBA:
Will they be available for Gilas in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup? They were made available by the PBA for this year's FIBA World Cup kasi World Cup na eh & we are hosting it. But what about lesser hyped FIBA tournaments?

This thing happened in last year's FIBA Asia Cup eh. Our PBA Gilas players were not available becoz the PBA season was still ongoing during the Asia Cup at yung mga magagaling na PBA people won't adjust the PBA calendar so as to synchronize it with the FIBA calendar. We were left with our B-league Gilas players to play for last year's Asia Cup.

We have to admit that there are good Gilas prospects playing in the PBA eh. Players like Malonzo, Perez, Oftana, Iskati Thompson, are good Gilas prospects. That is why I strongly believe that it is better for Philippine basketball that more & more Gilas potential players would be playing abroad - Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, simply becoz these players would be available for Gilas in FIBA tournaments. I just hope that players like Francis Lopez, Kevin Quiambao, Jonel Policarpio, Seven Gagate, Mark Belmonte, Chico Briones end up playing professional basketball in Japan or Korea or Taiwan. Wag lang sa PBA.

These guys can be our main core post-WC 2023 till the 2028 Olympics.

Just surround them with 10-12 reseves and we’re good.

                Oh, and a better coach.

Will there be a new coach in less than a month after the World Cup? Knowing how incompetent the SBP has been of late, worst case scenario is that Josh Reyes takes over because he has been the most-exposed to FIBA. They don't have a "consultant" like a Mark Dickel, Jong Uichico might be thinking he'll be too old for the job, and Tim Cone has Ginebra to worry about. Jolas might be an option and I won't be mad if he takes over Chot.
Jolas and the Serbian guy could be good enough. But knowing how shit SBP is, and probably will be, Joke pa rin, or a Chua-handpicked coach.

Man, SBP also need to invest in youth after the World Cup. They wasted too many talents last year.

                  Well said bro.
SBP people are just too busy thinking about the upcoming 2023 World Cup for them to think about the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers. Its as if these SBP people are doing a good job as far as our team's preparation for the World Cup.

Yan naman kasi ang problema sa SBP & the PBA, they are only concern for the present & hardly care about the future. Wala talagang foresight. Ang concern lang nila eh kung ano kakainin nila ngayong araw & doesn't care about what they may eat the next day.

I think SBP did a good job during its 1st few years but has gotten worse as years went by.

If the players U mentioned would become regular fixtures of Gilas in FIBA qualifiers & tournaments & other international tourneys in the next 4 yrs then its certain that by 2027, maganda na talaga ang chemistry o cohesion ng team. If U give that team about 4 to 5 weeks of full time training prior to the 2027 World Cup, magandang preparation na yun for that tournament.
                    Agree sir analyzed/D'Admiral?

Yeah, I’d throw in the young guys like Amos, Caelum Harris, and Konov too.

Ideally, Vučinić is the best option as he’s already here but I’m not sure the SBP will support him.

                      Anyone but Choke and Joke.

Nenad's affiliated with the PBA, though. But, he reportedly resigned due to the drama and expectatiins.

The way it looks right now is he only resigned since he was a mere consultant instead of his current "active consultant" role.

When? Just last month he was announced as consultant.

I mean, he resigned from Gilas last year reportedly due to the reasons I stated.

He's now MERALCO's active consultant, yeah. I was just referring to his Gilas stint.

That "active consultant" role is what a coach of Nenad's caliber deserves at the very least. Hopefully, he gets the gig, and even heads the youth development program at least.
