Sorry, I can't stop talking about Mike Philips. I like the prospect of having him in Gilas uniform. He is an athletic 6'8 and with good nose for the ball (rebounds and rim protection). Maybe raw but can improve.
Same sentiments bro. While I see Mike Philipps as not having the qualities of a franchise player (far from that). He could be a perfect energy role player in the mold of a Mark Pingris. And he's only around 21 or 22 at present. I just hope he gets the exemption from FIBA in 2 to 3 years time.

I think he will get an exemption ala Slaughter/Newsome.. he can understand and speak the language enough, has been in the country long enough and studied here, plus played college ball.. it will only be a matter of time..

what is more important now is for him to improve more and be a taller, bigger and better marc pingris type of player..

I am also hoping for the exemption of Ange Kouame. Imagine a frontline rotation of AJ, Ange and Mike. That will be awesome.

        • Phipps being raw and still needing to develop is really the essence of the FiBA rules and what it's trying to promote via regulation, which is essentially each federation should develop its players. And if that includes established roots in the country by cultural immersion (learning language etc) the better ..

Maybe it would be wiser for Mike Philipps to play in the PBA when he turns pro than play in Japan or Korea or Taiwan if only to boost his chances of getting FIBA exemption, right bros? Talking about being involved in Philippine basketball's domestic program for a good duration of time.

Talking about being better than Mark Pingris, I think Philipps can develop & polish medium range jump shot (15 to 18 feet) - something that Pingris never developed.

haha I can tell kennteh as below 6'4.. 6'3 at least as only he has shorter wingspan hence looking small but kquiam definitely not 6'5...brownlee is a legit 6'5 and he is tall enough.. kquaim isnt tall nough even in phil standards

                • Maybe Phillips can play for Chooks, would that qualify as local league? I don't want him enslaved by the PIBIEY.

You rather have him play 3x3 basketball and lose out on the development?

                    • My suggestion regarding Philipps is, play in the PBA for the meantime. Then after getting FIBA exemption, venture on playing in Japan or Korea.

The goals are to get FIBA exemption, then after that play in a pro league which could utilize your potential & earn more money & be available for national team service in FIBA qualifiers & tournaments - things that a player may not have much privillege while playing in the PBA.

                      • Why when is Philipps exhausting his college years of eligibility ( he can earn money while in Lasalle ) ? Note Taane (i would know LOL) and Mbala were paid handsomely in Lasalle. the Ravena bros were in no rush to enter the PBA as they were paid well while in college

He should then he might have to play a bit of PBA if he needs to reach the same number of years as Newsome.

The difference is Newsome started his residency at 21 yrs old as compared to Mike around 17 yrs old, quite a big difference, essentially the younger you start residency the less number of residency years are required , e.g . Spencer ..

He started in UAAP last year. Last year has 2 seasons. He still has remaining two playing years with DLSU (until 2024). After his DLSU stint, he already has 5 years of residency.

                              • Just some Trivia , James Spencer got his passport at 18 years old : "After all, he would've been a part of the 2018 Fiba Under-18 Asian Championship in Thailand had he gotten his Philippine passport on time last year" , James was born in 2000. so essentially if Spencer moved to UP as an 17/18 year old , got his passport at 18 , then as a 19 year old ( 1 or 2 years residency) he was exempted .

Now what's the difference with Philipps ? main difference is Spencer's name was submitted as part of the roster for FIBA clearance for the U19 Worlds, so essentially I tell you now if Mike's name is included in the roster for the World cup , to be requested for FIBA clearance , he will get approved ( very very confident) , the only question is will the SBP put his name in for FIBA clearance approval and essentially exemption?
