Unless we change our long-term strategy...our pipeline is for the Almazan and Erram types.

The only locally developed 6’7-8 player that actually has decent fundamentals in dribbling is Tamayo.

When we actually need less of the Erram and Almazan types (and the 6'5"-6'6" slow hefty types types) and more of the type of bigs who can both protect the rim and can defend the perimeter.

Carl actually improved his defense with UP and with Gilas, and he's competitive, but he's not exactly a good rim protector.

We have a surplus of the following:

          Guards
          Wings 6'3" and below
Bigs who are 6'6" and below (some can shoot, but most can't guard the perimeter)

On the other hand, we lack in the following areas:

6'5"+ wings (especially those who can defend; we have only Gabe, Malonzo, Navarro, hopefully Lopez, for that; Lucero is ineligible)
6'6"+ switchable forwards and bigs (Justine Baltazar, Luis Villegas types)
Rim protectors (well, we're really gonna lack in this regard, given our height)

We might need to focus on developing and recruiting 6'5"+ defensive wings and 6'6"+ switchable forwards and bigs, whether homegrown or overseas-based. Because, we need more of them in order to help compete against the likes of Japan, SoKor, Lebanon. We also need size inside like Kai to compete against bigger teams, though.
Just gonna bring this up again here.

We're kinda making progress in the 6'5" wing department, but we still need long 6'6"+ mobile and switchable tweeners and bigs, where we really lack (Hoops Highlights said, there are too many 6'5" bigs that can't defend the perimeter, what more for bigs above that height). Ability to help out and defend the rim is a bonus.

We need atleast 10 bigger versions (6'7-6'9) and more defensely-adept RDO-type of bigmen.
            Attack
            defend
            Unite

Thats still good. Decent post defense with decent perimeter defense is good enough if you consider advanced perimeter skills for a big. Carl theoretically can pinch in some minutes at SF. But this also highlights why I am more excited about Demisana than the more skillful Gagate. We only have few players with that combination of height and length. Good as Carl is he needs to play beside a better rim protector. In my eye test in the last Asia tourney, lineups with Erram performed better than any other lineup. Pity Chot favors offense because that lineup with KQ, Carl, Kiefer, SJ sucked big time. Erram might not be as skilled as Carl but rim protection might even be a bigger need of ours than big man scoring.

At least Cone is there to balance Chot out on defense. Cone was our MVP last window, really, with the way the team performed defensively.

He’ll most likely be our NT coach post-WC2023 if Chot leaves.

Carl's best position to defend is realistically the 4, I think Demisana is also suited to defend the 4\5 internationally. My problem with say the Demisana/Erram types is they are decent rim protectors but at 6'7/6'8. That height internationally is suited more for the 4 or small ball 5 but then they don't jump that high, it works when the opponents are shorter but then they go up against taller guys going at them and have to resort to fouling because they can't jump that high or lack the length. I remember Erram helping combat this by getting into position early to prevent players getting near the rim in the first place but its a weakness that I think gets exposed once they go against higher level competition.

Problem is, Cone might shuffle between Gilas and Ginebra if he doesn't let go of Ginebra. Might be a full-time coach. If not Cone, maybe one of the Superfriends, or even Jeff Napa. They might have Goldwin too, considering that Letran and UP shared a training bubble.

I'm more confident if Cone's the Gilas defensive coordinator. He'll be more focused on that end,

I hope Josh Reyes wont inherit his dad's post in Gilas

I hope both Josh and Chot are replaced....We won't get the best team unless both of them are replaced.

Management too should be replaced. Because of them, the program's back to square one after the World Cup. And, they don't have a plan B if the PBA stars are unavailable, and they don't invest in development.

Plus, Cone is not afraid to adapt to changing times. It’s 2023 and Chot still includes Pogoy as an undersized 6’2 SF. JFC.

Being able to defend is not all height, foot speed and hops. You can be average on those areas but good timing, read and natural defensive instincts can still make of a good defensive player. Besides, kid just turned 18 and may already be 6'9. Can't discount the possibility of another growth spurt.
                                Who's that prospect?
