Carl actually improved his defense with UP and with Gilas, and he's competitive, but he's not exactly a good rim protector.

We have a surplus of the following:
Guards
Wings 6'3" and below
Bigs who are 6'6" and below (some can shoot, but most can't guard the perimeter)
On the other hand, we lack in the following areas:
6'5"+ wings (especially those who can defend; we have only Gabe, Malonzo, Navarro, hopefully Lopez, for that; Lucero is ineligible)
6'6"+ switchable forwards and bigs (Justine Baltazar, Luis Villegas types)
Rim protectors (well, we're really gonna lack in this regard, given our height)
We might need to focus on developing and recruiting 6'5"+ defensive wings and 6'6"+ switchable forwards and bigs, whether homegrown or overseas-based. Because, we need more of them in order to help compete against the likes of Japan, SoKor, Lebanon. We also need size inside like Kai to compete against bigger teams, though.
We're kinda making progress in the 6'5" wing department, but we still need long 6'6"+ mobile and switchable tweeners and bigs, where we really lack (Hoops Highlights said, there are too many 6'5" bigs that can't defend the perimeter, what more for bigs above that height). Ability to help out and defend the rim is a bonus.

Originally posted by Rds View PostThats still good. Decent post defense with decent perimeter defense is good enough if you consider advanced perimeter skills for a big. Carl theoretically can pinch in some minutes at SF. But this also highlights why I am more excited about Demisana than the more skillful Gagate. We only have few players with that combination of height and length. Good as Carl is he needs to play beside a better rim protector. In my eye test in the last Asia tourney, lineups with Erram performed better than any other lineup. Pity Chot favors offense because that lineup with KQ, Carl, Kiefer, SJ sucked big time. Erram might not be as skilled as Carl but rim protection might even be a bigger need of ours than big man scoring.

I'm more confident if Cone's the Gilas defensive coordinator. He'll be more focused on that end,

Originally posted by The Aerial VoyagerInterestingly, Demisana who's described as slow and can't jump averaged 1 block in under 8 minutes per game at the u18 while the much hyped "athletic" prospect from down under averaged 0.3 in over 26 minutes a game. Being able to defend is not all height, foot speed and hops. You can be average on those areas but good timing, read and natural defensive instincts can still make of a good defensive player. Besides, kid just turned 18 and may already be 6'9. Can't discount the possibility of another growth spurt.
