I wanna ask this question becoz everytime nalang that we have a No. of PBA players in our national team such players struggle to adjust with the way calls on foul & contact are done in the FIBA game. We can see that almost everytime a PBA national team player is assessed with a foul U can see from the facial expression of player na parang naso surprise sya or nagwa wonder about the call. Everytime we send a PBA-select national team in FIBA competitions or Asian Games, our team commits too many fouls.

On the other hand our all-amateur Gilas team handled by coach Tab Baldwin in 2021 seems to have no trouble adjusting to how calls on fouls are done in the FIBA game.

It may look like a minor difference (PBA rules on fouls/contacts compared to that of FIBA) but in reality, it has a significant impact on national team.

I think applying the FIBA rules on fouls/contacts in the PBA would bring more pros than cons for Philippine basketball.
I think it is different. Goorjan was talking about freedom of movement and how Nicholson was being bumped all the time without fouls. Goorjan was an NBL coach so he should know rugged Fiba legal plays. The fact that a coach with his experience and ability had to ask the officials what are legal defensive moves in the PBA and what are not means it is the first time he has experienced this type of foul calling.

In that article, Chot also said that Gorunovic will also help out with Gilas, give them another point of view.

Hope he stays on after the WC, and helps out in player development as well, both in the senior and youth levels of Gilas.

          • It seems China will use FIBA eligibility for Asian Games, not the previous one that Indonesia used in 2018... Well, It's China and they can do whatever they want.. So it means it's likely that no FIBA ineligible players for this edition of Asiad.. China wants to defend the gold medal, that's why they will take advantage what they have as always...

Getting Olympic spot are harder than winning Asiad gold this time... I see China will use this scapegoat in case they will fail again to qualify outright to Olympics, Winning gold medal in Asian games will please their billion fans who are now also frustrated what they saw on current Chinese team...

Yeah, we should make efforts to recruit and develop 6'5"-6'8" switchable versatile guys. That means focusing on mobility for players of that size, especially for those who have it, and training them to harness that mobility for defense. We need more Justine Baltazar, Will Navarro, Calvin Oftana, Dwight Ramos, and Jamie Malonzo types, although the latter two might be more applicable to Fil-foreigners. The Kevin Santos (Letran; he's kinda mobile, long and athletic at 6'5")/Allen Liwag/Troy Rosario/JB Bahio/Carlos Sumabat/Josh Lazaro types should be, or should have been in the case of Troy, developed into versatile and switchable forwards, and if possible, wings.

Best thing to do talaga is train every kid as guards in skillset and mobility, so that in case they grow taller, they retain guard skills and mobility.

On the flip side, the Tab and Nenad-coached teams struggled against more physical sides, like NZ in the qualifiers and the MENA teams in the King's Cup.

There has to be a balance. I do get the merit in tighter officiating, as our players will be forced more to defend with their feet than rely on their hands and reaching in, but we also have to be able to take and dish out physicality.

Its becoz we already have a good idea of which players would most likely make it to the final-12 man roster for the World Cup. Of course names such as Kai, Dwight Ramos, Iskati, Parks, Japeth, Fajardo, Clarkson, CJ Perez are the most likely players that would make it to the 12-man roster. Alam na talaga natin that those players will most likely make it to the World Cup.

But for the post-World Cup Gilas composition, medyo its still a guessing game. Most likely guys like Japeth, Junmar & Pogoy won't be around for Gilas by that time.

I hope more of our better Gilas prospects currently in college and high school go overseas (NBL, KBL, B.League) after 2023. Guys like Carl, Schonny, Francis Lopez, Mason Amos, Jerom Lastimosa, Cholo Anonuevo. Kasi, I don't trust the PBA to adjust the schedule at least 5-7 days before windows, and at least 2-3 months before the World Cup so that our players would have sufficient training to build chemistry and cohesion. And, I don't expect the SBP to ask the PBA to adjust. Baka naman, the adjustment is just for this WC, because we're a host.

That's why I'm campaigning for our best players to go overseas, e. Availability and practice time for FIBA windows and tournaments seems more sure, even after 2023. Dwight, Kiefer, Juan GDL, Parks, and Thirdy were made available for Gilas from the B.League (although only Dwight, Parks, and Thirdy were really useful). SJ was allowed by KOGAS to play, after he had signed for them. And then, thanks to the PBA schedule then, we crammed for the 2017 Asia Cup, 2018 Asian Games (where we even pulled out at first, 9 days before the start of the tournament), 2019 WC (especially this one, compounded by a bad roster), and only Erram was made available for last year's Asia Cup.

News article coming from(any) daily broadsheet stuff be it the official online link or the traditional hard copy from your friendly neighborhood newsstand doesn’t guarantee that it is 100% true unless there is an official statement coming from Asian Games Organizing committee with an official letterhead on it and with a handwritten signature(over printed name) then that’s it, it’s confirm. For now I’m still awaiting what will be the official statement coming from our sports officials specifically from the SBP the real score about this so-called pre-requisite coming from that news article.

                            • Question if the Bay Area Chinese forward (around 6'8) was Filipino, would he be at the level to play for Gilas , given our lack of size mobility at the forward spot

Yeah, I think he will be. An athletic 6'9" combo forward who can shoot, drive, and defend at a good level will (and should) have a place in Gilas.

I can't believe our development system hasn't totally figured this out.
