I really don't know where people get thier stat on our rebounding. We always are top 5 rebounder in Asia tournaments.
Really? It almost always feels like we are the worst perimeter shooting team and rebounding team on the games I've watch.
BTW who is our top rebounder?
I think we have outrebounded Lebanon (though we lost the game), Saudi Arabia (both games) & Jordan in the 4th & 5th windows.
I think na outrebound tayo in almost all of our games in the last FIBA Asia Cup, but that Gilas team was depleted as guys like Kai Sotto, Ange Kouame, Dwight Ramos & our PBA boys weren't available, so I think its understandable.
I think in so far as Asian level lang ang pinag uusapan, di tayo madedehado having guys like Kai, Kouame (if he is our NP), Japeth, Junmar, AJ Edu, Tamayo, Baltazar, Jamie Malonzo in the frontcourt.
"A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

Not to mention terrible defense from 2017 to 2019, last February window, last SEA Games, and last Asia Cup. We gave up a lot of efficient games from Japan, China, SoKor (70-something 3PT%), Kazakhstan, and Lebanon. Thank God we got personnel in Dwight, Malonzo, Ange, Scottie, Thirdy, Perez, Japeth, and until recently Navarro (hope he recovers well) to help. Heck, even Pogoy became a good defender last window.
As for top rebounders, it's Kai with 9.3 RPG. Next is Scottie, with 7.3.
Is Jamie Malonzo our current version of Kelly Williams in the Gilas team? Halos identical kasi laro nilang 2. While I believe that prime Kelly Williams was the better defender, I think Malonzo is the better offensive player. Malonzo has better shooting than a prime Kelly Williams & I think Malonzo can play the small forward spot better than Kelly.
I think both are good rebounders.

Hindi rin, Malonzo is pretty unique that he is more of a combo forward while Kelly is more PF/C. Malonzo has more guard skills than Kelly IMO.
I dont think Kelly ever had a good fiba career, during his peak we were experimenting with Gilas 1, then when we started picking pba players again thats when his blood disorder manifested.

I think Kelly was serviceable for team Pilipinas in the 2007 FIBA Asia Championship although that team finished a dismal 9th place. He was also valuable for coach Rajko Toroman's Gilas-1 team as one of 4 PBA players sent to reinforce the young Gilas-1 squad.
It wasn't like Kelly was among the top scorers of the team. He was just a role player who provided defense, rebounding, & hustle.

Asian Games to Fiba Asia from 90s to 2010s. We have been on top 5 except for 2017. Our 3pt shooting a issue for us thou
The context of rosters for Gilas in next few months is obviously for the World cup , ( not really Asian competition), Asia generally especially traditional Asia ( Korea, China Philippines) are generally considered weak rebounding teams in the world context , their players really have a reputation as lacking a motor and strength, two critical factors to being a good rebounder.
In the world context , Asian teams.are generally deficient in most areas, but not so much shooting or offense (especially Korea), but specifically defense and rebounding

Basketball now might be totally different from how it was played 15 years ago but sophomore Kelly Williams was a mvp, let's say Malonzo might be a more versatile scorer than Kelly but i don't think he is a better overall scorer than Kelly, Sta. Lucia Kelly is a different animal than the TNT Kelly the guy can score 30 points above any given night, though i believe that players like him, DS, Hrabak, Mic, Limpot , Will Antonio, Rob Wainwright, TDLC were born too early for their style of play these guys were the type of players that i think will thrive in the current style of play

We pride ourselves on being physical, but we're weak in rebounding and defense. I honestly wish to see us being the exception in Asian basketball. Tough-playing, and good defensively. Emphasis on toughness and versatility. Question is, how do we get good on defense, and develop the players for it?
We have Scottie, Dwight, and Malonzo as higher-motor players, so that's a start. Honestly, we're gonna need more of those, and hopefully get taller players with that kind of motor.

On a not so distant future frontline rotation of Edu,Kouame,Mike Philipps would improve our rebounding and defense dept

And that's the concern for this world cup, none of the 3 bigs above who possess that defensive and rebounding centric game are likely to available. Which begs the question , who then in the team plays that critical role ( defensive rebounding active big?)

The world cup will be the last hurrah of the old guard of bigs: Japeth and Junemar. It will be a challenge without Kouame or Edu but Cone and Chot will try to make it work.

The likely players are Scottie, Malonzo, and Dwight as the high-motor players. Maybe one of Perez and Thirdy. However, none of them are bigs (though Malonzo can play 4, Dwight too in a few stretches).
And another problem is, most of our eligible internationally-sized high-motor players are in positions other than the 4 and the 5. Might need more 6'6"-6'8" PF/Cs who have a high motor, a version of Pingris with that height. Almazan sana, but he didn't perform in FIBA.
