Just like what happened to Gilas in the 2nd half vs DR, basketball just like any team sports does not always pan out like a computer simulation, the organic elements and intuition involved in it(the one on one communications, the confidence in individual skill, the management of emotions and energy, gauging the lethargy and morale of your squad and stepping up when needed and many other elements which cannot be trained by just basketball clinics etc) are just as important as the grand gameplan. Koreans and Asians in general are not very vocal people so they tend to do horribly in sports that require more intimate, squad communication(basketball is more like a SWAT raid than a conventional long distance, large scale warfare like soccer where the Koreans and Japanese are world class). We Asians simply lack the intuition and feel of the game, what they'd call basketball IQ, our Terrence Romeo and Jayson Castro have it in abundance but they weren't blessed with the size needed to succeed against the giants of basketball, now we have the opposite, the size but lacking in intuition and game feel. This is why it's needed for Filipino players to play abroad asap, to train that area of their game which the culture in the region simply does not have, it's not enough that players like Tamayo, Baltazar, Navarro etc just play in other Asian leagues, I honestly think they would develop further playing pick up in America rather than train with other Asians. Australia and New Zealand even the weakest leagues there would be decent for our taller prospects, anywhere outside of Asia.
Yeah, we now lack the shot creation of a Castro or Romeo. Too dependent now on the system, just like the Koreans (who would have thought we would share their weakness?). Juan could have been that guy, Dwight as well (had he not gotten injured). Maybe Abarrientos once he develops.

We also need shot creation from the bigs. We barely went to the post in the qualifiers (both FIBA Asia and OQT). I think Tab needs to put more emphasis on post play or try to run the offense through the bigs a bit more. Kouame (honestly a pleasant surprise), Kai, Baltazar, and Tamayo have the ability to score down low. Hope more plays are devised to get them to score in the post. Like I said, our bigs are key. When it comes to post scoring, I feel our bigs are better than the East Asian bigs bar those of China.

He was Tabs pick for SG in his Gilas mythical 5.

Heading is more of a shooter now. Albeit with a slow release. Its as if he waits for the close out before he shoots. Thats why I think he needs to develop his drive more as a counter.
Right now, I'm going with Heading over Marcio and Pogoy, if only due to potential and age. You're right, Heading needs to drive a bit more. He shows promise when finishing, so he needs to focus on that. Maybe add a pull-up and/or floater when attacking closeouts as well.

You're right about Marcio, though, he's a better defender. Kung 'di lang madamot ang SMB, we might have seen him perform a bit well internationally. Sayang. It would have brought them some more prestige as well, having a player or players that perform well internationally.

We'll see if Tab made an adjustment on the offense this coming tournament, there's definitely gonna be change in personnel one or two who was injured and can play now probably will come in as replacements.

It's not the citing of the possibilities that is a give away that shows you don't know what you're talking about , but the rationale and basis of your guesses. , it's really off

          • Size always matters in basketball. For coaches, it is what they DO and not what they SAY that is important.

Well before the serbia and DR game, pinoys already know that tiny sj and rj will be destroyed by the bigger, stronger and more skilled oqt foreign guards.

It seems that, from time immemorial, coaches cannot resist the siren call to include tiny guards that are unfit for fiba nt duties.

It is also ridiculous to get a big gilas frontline, then not set up domination plays inside the paint. The plays for junmar can look stupidly repetitive against pitifully small 6'6 centers, but his post moves are dozens of trophies and awards in the pba bank.

However, i did notice the tab admission that people with pay grades higher than him can and do change player choices. These people probably represent the nt financiers. They can be interested in seeing their favored players get "international exposure", while much better local and filam players are deprioritized, when WINNING obviously is the ONLY PRIORITY FOR ANY NT. As i said, i like tab because he has enough fortitude not to make clearly stupid excuses for losing.

And, in fairness to the nt coaches, i dont really see the team rise to top 20, or even top 25 nts by 2023. The very serious flaws in having just one major nt donor, and using pba players with minimal teammanship and nt practices, will always drag down the international winning opportunities.

More importance should also be given in the very big differences in the roles and responsibilities of a pg, in contrast to sgs and combo guards. Hindi pwedeng mas suwapang pa sa scoring at hero balling ang point guards. The pgs are fit for fiba nt if they are VERY GOOD in assists, steals, trapping, breaking pnrs, turnover minimization, and gang rebounding. Hindi na natuto mga pinoy sa tamang gamit, evaluation at selection ng pgs.

Indicators of bad guard selection is when the GROUP OF pgs regularly outscore sgs and combos, their assists and rebounds are well below those of opposing GROUPS of pgs, their turnovers and bad decisions are more than the opposition pg group, etc.

            • I think if Gilas continuous to improve, we should bein the top 30 instead of top 35. We'll see if we've get ahead of Korea for this window when FIBA releases the new ranking.

The pts difference between Korea the PH in rankings is literally 0.3 pts lang based on the 2nd window perfoemance.

Speaking of a shot creator at the small man positions, isn't that the role preserved for Jordan Clarkson. Well, I'm referring here to the 2023 FIBA World Cup, but for the pre-2023 World Cup windows/tournament in which we won't have Clarkson, for me the perfect option is CJ Perez. But then again, Perez is with the evil empire eh.

While we believe that things like good system, cohesion, preparation are vital factors, I still think this current Gilas team would still need some sort of a go-to-guy player or a shot creator.

                • 1GDL is probably a good candidate for someone who can create their own shots

I wish he got included in the 3rd window and OQT so we could have seen what he can do in higher competition.

                  • Well then, maybe it's by design the Tab does not have a go to scorer, especially while still introducing and building the system and culture. If Tab had a ball dominant scorer as early as now , the others will not be developed and we move away from a system.
As Tab said he has NO issues with a Clarkson level player with his IQ and talent level coming in late in 2023

But if we're talking about JC Perez or Romeo level , no way will that work in world level, in the context of that level those guys are simply not good enough to rely on as go to scorers , that won't work. That is the context of my statement , we cannot rely on talent to win. (We simply do not have that talent level to rely on it , but have to rely on chemistry to win at worlds)

                    • Go to level requirements

Put it this way, for one to be an effective FIBA world go to scorer , one has to be averaging around 17 pts a game for a mid major Div 1 US college , or it's equivalent in major foreign league.
Simply we do not have that player.. maybe Remy?

Navarro already has a definite role in Gila's & that is being the team's best wing defender ala Gabe Norwood. And such role is so vital for the team.

Would Kobe be willing to accept such a role? I doubt that. Let's face it, Kobe has a star complex. I don't think he would be content playing as a mere role player or a utility guy with limited opportunity to score. Kumbaga sa opisina, pang managerial position and gustong trabaho ni Kobe. I don't think he would be willing to do utility work.

Besides, Kobe hasn't yet proven if he can play good defense in the perimeter - something Navaro has already exhibited so far.

Is he even a good defender? Is he really an upgrade over our current wing prospects? TBH I'm happy with Tamayo, Balti, Navarro.

                          • Coach Chot's still stands on his small ball concept. 14:40 -16:04 "I think they have to learn how to play small ball - Chot Reyes"

well I'm praying that this guy may not be able to dip his hand again on our Gilas program. Honestly speaking I am not mad if we parade this small ball concept if our opponents are the likes of Japan, Korea, Chinese Taipeh, our SEA neighbors wherein our 5"9 to 5"11 dudes can somehow match-up on their counterpart but with the likes of China, Iran, Australia, New Zealand, Lebanon, Jordan, Euro and American teams now wait a minute!! we had a situation here because surely they will maul our backcourt midgets all game long. I think we already discuss this issue even in other thread that a 6'1 to 6'5 range as our main playmaker is an ideal height if we want to be competitive outside Asia.

                            • Fpr me, there are 2 categories of Small Ball

                              1. "Midget Ball" - Literally just based it in height and speed. Lol.

                              2. "Skilled Ball" - GSW dynasty are considered small ball with a 7 footer Wing, and a 6'6-6'7 Center. Because their concept for them of " small ball" is"skilled ball" not " small height ball"
