I think we should measure how successful schools are in producing and developing FIBA-fit players, not just players who can be successful in the PBA. Cause, you know there are good players in the PBA that aren't exactly cutting it in the international scene.
This is a good motivation but unfortunately Ateneos level for student athletes is too high. Ever since Thirdy came in they have been red shirting guys for acads. I dont see that even in the US. High potential home growns cant afford to waste a year just to prop up their acads. Even just a year in the UAAP can put you in the radar of Asian leagues.

Just imagine if Perez and Arvin never left Ateneo. Perez might have been a PG before he graduated and competed internstionally regularly. Arvin might have been a decent defender and even became more of a monster offensively.

Now u see Ateneo is forced to make up the home grown talent deficit with Filfors. These guys are native English speakers with built in advantage on homegrowns to anything related to English.

So unfortunately it is Filfors now who benefit with Tabs training not homegrowns.

I just cant believe that Filfors are just better students than homegrowns. They are just probably better at English comprehension and writing. We shouldnt penalize home growns just because they are worse at English than Filfors.

This is false news I think. Give me a quote thats says Philips is Fiba eligible not a vague headline saying " Philips makes himself available for Gilas"

Not everyone's cut out for academics, like I say. Some are better off for tech-voc, or in this case, sports.

Now, as for taller, more versatile defensive wings/forwards, potentially or otherwise, ther are other schools now. UP has 6'4" Torculas, 6'6" Lucero, 6'6" Briones, 6'5" Ashon Andrews, and 6'6" Mark Belmonte. La Salle has 6'5" Abadam. Let's hope these schools can develop said players to be versatile perimeter players and especially defenders. Ewan ko lang for big guards, though.

Don't know if its fake news, but the article can be interpreted in both ways, the writer didn't really give any reference or fact, its like "breaking news"more to follow.

And with possible Al Chua running the show for SBP in the future? Goodluck with that... I don't think he will prioritize development... It will still the same cycle for us as Gilas still under PBA for borrowing players for FIBA competitions, And also Al Chua is one of BCAP's head, For sure he will rather to hire Local coach than hiring foreign coach.. Eh no.1 against yan against foreign coaches eh....
Well, local coaches for Gilas are OK, as long as they have mentorship and are more tactically mature (which I have said leaves it to the younger generation of coaches like Goldwin, Charles Tiu, Aldin Ayo, Chito Victolero). Better sana kung may foreign mentor, but if local, train them overseas, and just have Jong in the coaching staff.

As for building for the future, Boss has no choice. Need to prepare for life after the useful PBA players because, most of them are old or aging. By February 2024 (first window after WC) June Mar and Erram will be 34 going 35, Japeth will be 37, Castro will be 36 going 37, Perez, Parks, and Scottie will be 30 going 31, Marcio will be 35 going 36, Terrence will be 32 going 33. Only Oftana and Malonzo will be the useful Gilas players below 30, with maybe Mamu, Javi, and maybe Arana and Ambohot as useful contributors.

So yeah, I think after the WC, it's time for a rebuild with useful younger PBA, collegiate, B.League, and KBL players, and call up as many as possible to form a 22-30 man pool. Add some of this year's U16 and U18 players into the mix. We can't rely on the older guys forever.

                  • Can Joshua Hardeman be considered a local? Born in the Philippines to American Parents. If he gets PH passport through Naturalization will he then be considered local since he was born in the country and his basketball heritage is also backed up by the Philippines?

yeah it does sound weird that we have a lot of talented tall 4s right now. but it's a good problem to have. not to mention our young guys offer different skillsets so it gives us plenty of options. tamayo as the face up four, mike as the energy guy rim running type, and baltazar as the versatile four who could defend wings.

                      • I have no issue about NP. But having foreign players with no Filipino blood to play as a local is revolting. I don't think the PH is that desperate. We will win or loss with what we have. I'd rather see a fighting PH team loss to Cambodia than win against Lebanon with Kouame playing as local

I dont mind the blood thing as long as its people who are Filipino in there heart. Someone like Ola Adeogun. Someone doing it for the money though is a problem (Not necessarily Kouame but well get to know more after his Ateneo stint).

Incoming days-long lecture and debate from Analyzed and Labradoodle regarding PHL citizenship and Hagop rule purpose, LOL! But on a serious note, I think it would be most definitely okay for me to have Kouame around as a local as he's not the mercenary type. Gotta move on with the times.

Hopefully we can see taller 3's (6'5"+) and even 2's (6'4"+) in the future, plus more versatile 4's and 5's on both ends.
