Yeah, and I dunno if he's gonna focus in youth and in developing our local coaches. For all we know, he might hire a coach that sticks to tactics that work in the PBA, not in FIBA, and go to PBA vets even in 2024.

If Boss does take over, I'm just hoping that he considers a youth-based lineup for the Gilas pool, with a few PBA holdovers from the 2023 World Cup.

The thing is, the useful PBA players are aging. By February 2024, June Mar will be 34 going 35, Japeth will be 38, Terrence will be 32, Marcio will be 35 going 36, Perez will be 30 going 31, Castro will be 37 going 38. Need to inject new blood given this situation.

That is if they can control the young talents and stop them from playing overseas.

It would really be stupid for PBA to push that policy after WC. Di ba nila alam na the more they insist on their insular ways, the more our top young guys will not prioritize joining their circus? People running the league should be more open-minded these days for chrissake.

If I were them, I'll do this:

Establish a draft for 2 age groups. One is for for 20~24 (the real rookies), the other for 25~30 year-olds. 3 rounds for the former, just 1 for the latter. Scrap the Gilas/NT draft for good. It doesn't really help the NT's cause. Overseas-based/developed Pinoy-heritage players are allowed provided that they have legit documents and passports. Pinoy ballers over the age of 31 can be signed thru direct-hiring by any team, but each team will only be allowed 1 slot for such signing per season. Direct-hiring is optional.

              Here's the list:

U16: Caelum, Konov, Competente, Mahmood, Bayla
U18: Mason, Gagate, Demisana, Pablo, Gamber, Nacua
Kai's Batang Gilas teammates: Tamayo, Panopio, AJ Edu, Dave Ildefonso, Chiu, Spencer, Cortez, Cariño
Other non-PBA players: Dwight, Kobe, Abando, Abarrientos, Belangel, Ange, Quiambao, Anonuevo, Gozum, Liwag, Lopez, Juan GDL

Pretty long list. After the WC, SBP should call on these guys, along with a few holdovers (who I reckon to be Oftana, Malonzo, Kiefer, Thirdy, Carl, Kai, and Dwight), to form a big pool to prepare for the WC, starting with the February 2024 FIBA Asia Cup qualifying window. Have them train for a long time leading up to that window, from December to February, just to lay the foundation and establish chemistry.

Let's face it. After the WC, we really need to rebuild the program, and this could be the start.
As long as Panlileo is the SBP President and Choke as the Director of Operations and coach....hopeless and gilas.

And the PBA doesn't mend its ways.
"A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

When I was talking about injecting new blood, I meant new young players for the Gilas team, whether or not the young guys enter the PBA. I didn't necessarily mean young talents entering the PBA.

Meaning, get the likes of Mason, Gamber, Demisana, Gagate, Nacua, Coronel, Bahay from the U18, then Anonuevo, Torculas, Tamayo, Quiambao from the UAAP. Then the KBL and B.League boys like Dwight, the Ravena brothers, Gutang, RJ, SJ, Navarro, and almost all of them are either young or in their prime. The sooner we inject them into a good Gilas system, the better, and we now have a long-term plan. If they train early, may foundation na, even if they go pro earlier than expected.

Yeah, I agree with most of what you posted. It's quite a talented bunch with most of them having already been exposed and have proven themselves to be effective in the FIBA setting. Barring major injuries/regression, it would be a sin to abandon what the federation has started with them. And with the SBP-PBA(SMC) leading the way from 2023 and beyond, i just hope they'll hire a quality coach (Tab's the benchmark) that runs a system similar or even better than Tab's, or something that maximizes the skill sets of the future core NT players.

A proven international coach should be hired to mentor the promising local coaches we have. Get a succession plan in place too.

And yeah, I hope na lang that SMC would see the merits of a large, young pool if they take over. More easily molded for the FIBA game. Hope na lang boss lets go of his bias against foreign coaches if it helps us win, and sees the value of having many young players for Gilas, whether or not they join the PBA.

Didn't watch the match, woke up to a loss, just as expected.

Ryan Alba though? He expected Gilas to win LOL

It was a winnable game. We just couldn't capitalize.

Of course, talent-wise we're slightly ahead with JC, Dwight, and Kai.

But since the coach is...lam mo na yun. Hahaha
