  • After the WC, we need to rebuild and overhaul how we do things in the men's basketball end.

Start with the build-up to the 2025 Asia Cup. Get a training pool for the February 2024 window, have them train from mid-December to mid-February, and have them compete in Jones Cup, Dubai tournament, and the like.

Another thing we need is a decent system, on offense and especially on defense. What coach has a decent system, especially on defense, though? And again, we need proven international coaches to mentor our local coaches.

Note: I'd like a good defensive system because I still remember the bad defensive showings e.g. SoKor 2017 and Indonesia 2022.

Pick up game defense isn't going to cut it. I wouldn't be surprised if even Saudi Arabia would give this team problems
JC showed the last time that he can at least defend at the Asian level. We were even praising his defense

      • We will see. From Kais previous Fiba performance, at a time he will give you around 5 mins of good play. After that he tires out and his defense goes down and he needs to sit down. So I think our rim protection will still rely on the inconsistent Japeth.

        • I dont understand why SBP Director of Operations and Coach Chot wont take advantage of tune up games that are available...They could have a tune up game with Bay Dragons, with Ateneo (since there is no overlap of players unlike UP and La Salle). They even pulled out of a possible tune up games with Asvel Lyon.

Sure, they would say that those are not needed since we are already qualified for the World 2023, but does that mean that we dont have to do well at all even in World 2023 since we already reached our objective of getting in the World 2023?

I thought Japeth will not be able to join the Lebanon game but will only suit up for the game against Saudi

Aside from the Dragons, Tony Parker's ASVEL Team (though they are to arrive by August 28 pa). Anyway, since there is no team yet and the SBP is having difficulty in the pool composition and attendance in practice, it follows that they cant muster a team that could scrimmage with the Dragons. Too bad, that would have been a good test for Gilas

I think prior to Clarkson & Kai's arrival, the Gilas pool already has about 11 players available. That's enough to hold a scrimmage against the Dragons or Ateneo.

They won't play against Ateneo, because Ateneo (and Tab Baldwin) might actually win, and that's bad for Chot's image.
About the others, maybe Gilas/SBP are avoiding defeats? If that's the case, can they have a friendly with Indonesia instead loljk

Yup. It's all about the image for Chot. I remember him trumping a close tuneup against France for the WC prep. He neglected to say that he essentially had two NPS as Blatche and Douthit were subbing for each other. I don't understand not making Junemar the back up C for tuneups. Was Chot so untrusting of Junemar that he wouldn't let him play backup even for tuneups? Note that even in the WC he only played Junemar limited minutes prior to the game against Senegal even if Junemar was playing well both statistically and and in the eye test.

                      • Chot is so bad at coaching big men, Kelly Williams who was turning into LBJ of the Philippines basically turned into a rebound guy when he went to TNT

Chot first became famous for bringing Purefoods to consecutive AFC finals appearances. I think he won a couple with them. He handled Cap, an unstoppable force in the paint at that time. Maybe he got disillusioned with homegrown postup bigs because of that. He has shown a tendency of relying on athletic but relatively low skilled bigs and slow unathletic bigs who can shoot from outside. Your either an athletic abanger or a stretch 4. Not much post plays. And you have to be a high FG outside shooter. Not much room for postup or midrange bigs

                            • Depends on how much Chot the Tuko will listen to his assistants. CTC makes good use of his bigs. I just don't like his pack the paint defense.

                              • Balti says in his press conference with Hiroshima that if Gilas needs him, he'll be ready: https://tbti.me/s22gro

He's a key defender, and we'll need him in the build-up to the WC, the WC itself, and beyond.
