Yeng can develop players for the international game, like with Gabe and Oftana, but his inexperience in international play dooms him. Cone adapted his offensive system and preaches ball movement, but defensively, the perimeter is a concern. Chot naman, runs his plays primarily through his star guards, but doesn't focus on defense that much (see 2017 Asia Cup and 2022 SEA Games). Then we have Leo Austria, who runs plays through June Mar, but resorts to zone on defense a bit too much.

Though, Black can actually be a good defensive coordinator, given his defense at MERALCO.

Thing is, most older PBA coaches have not adapted enough, but they're still selected and in consideration for Gilas coach.
I say the PBA rules which differ a lot from FIBA rules contribute to the stagnation of our PBA coaches.

    • Guys, how do U see Jamie Malonzo's potential as a national team player? Does he have the makings of becoming a quality FIBA player?

I see a good potential in Malonzo becoming a quality small forward/combo forward in Asia-Oceania basketball. He just needs enough reps. Malonzo should be a regular fixture for Gilas so as to get enough reps.

Compared to a Dwight Ramos, Malonzo is more athletic, but Ramos has better ball handling & shooting (slight lang naman). I think both are decent defenders.

now that he's fiba eligible, i hope malonzo plays in the b-league when his contract is up. he will play against better competition as he will likely be matched up against world imports, and get used to fiba rules. not to mention earn way more than in the pba

I see him as a second coming of Kelly Williams.

Agree with U bro. Coach Yeng Guiao just needs enough reps coaching in FIBA games or competitions. I think coach Yeng is a better defensive coach than Choke Reyes.
Yeng struggled defensively, though. His inexperience here kinda doomed him in this area, and with the lineups he picked. And he carried his slow timeout habit to the FIBA game too.

Not so much the rules, but also the play style. Let's see na lang how Aldin Ayo can break the trend in the PBA.

In the UAAP, Tab forced coaches to raise their level and adjust their styles. I mean, UP won because we had a good coach who could counter Tab, along with a good defense and a talented team. Ayo had a strong talent advantage when he beat Tab, but he was no slouch tactically.

That's why I believe the younger coaches are more fit for international ball in a head coaching capacity. Systems better fit, on both ends. Goldwin's and Victolero's defense, Charles Tiu's and Ayo's offense. However, might need to serve under a proven international coach to learn more about the international game.

Why does Jong not push for coaching the team to Lebanon to "ease the burden"of Chot coaching 2 teams at the same time.I have a feeling if Jong wins it will start a replace Chot with Jong demand.

I just realized that situation, but if he surround himself with capable assistant coaches that will takeover the hard physical grueling part,I believe it will be ok.Jong's experience with both with Tab and Chot should serve as a good tactician coach. He could have CTC barking hard orders during practice,in actual games Jong was not a very intense coach anyways.I just fell that Jong commands more respect and I have a feeling that players will play hard for him than Chot.

papansin. whats the point of asking that if the coach already mentioned "Coach Tim repeated himself: We don't need to win the game against Lebanon. Sure, it's going to be good for [press relations], going to be [a] good [response to] my haters, but for the team's objective? Not necessarily,"
0-2, 2-0, there is no point anymore. Coach Norman's step son just wants some hits.

because he knows, more than anyone in this forum, whats up. and whatever it is, its obvious for him that its not worth fussing about. i dont know him personally so this is just my opinion. but he is originally a disciple of Coach Ron Jacob's and the NCC was a trailblazer in Philippines basketball. so im confident if he knows if his voice can make a difference, he will speak up. but Gilas is a sinking ship already with a good finish in WC the only thing to give people a last good look. he'll probably just do his part and let it die its natural death.
