Once he figures it out , it can be scary.
Remember he's way ahead of Castro , when Jason was still in college
That's what I pointed out about RJ a couple of days ago. He was just playing high school basketball about a just a year ago then everything had to stop becoz of this pandemic. Then this call up from coach Tab to join Gilas for the 3rd window & OQT. But even if RJ (& SJ Belangel) was in the "Calam-bubble", under the hierarchy, Matt Nieto is the No. 1 point guard in the pool while RJ & SJ would be coming from behind. But Matt was hit by an injury, hence both RJ & SJ have become the point guards of the team in the 3rd window & OQT.

RJ's downside is his tendency to take ill-advised shots & that over eagerness to score. But you have to understand that in high school basketball, RJ was the focal point in offense with the FEU Baby Tamaraws. He is the team's No. 1 scorer, & he is such a gifted scorer. Hence, the transition from being the focal point of offense in his high school to being among the least options in offense with Gilas isn't that easy for RJ. Its hard to tame one's offensive or scoring instincts right away. Its a process that takes time.

      • Of course so much can still happen until 2023.
But I'm leaning on our 2 PGs for 2023 being Kiefer and RJ.
Of course the premise is they train with Tab

That the benefit Matt and SJ have , but given the same level experience with Tab, i think Kiefer and RJ would be good PGs for 2023

Better finisher, yes. Much better in decision making? I don't think so. Even during in his mid-20's Castro wasn't among the best decision maker among PBA point guards. Castro's upside that made him a valuable natjonal team prospect is his offensive skills, quickness & athleticism. I say Alapag, Tenorio, Chris Tiu, JV Casio have better decision making than Castro.

Yes for PCU, Singapore slingers and Harbor Center. HC funded our SEAG team and they played in Australia.

This was a comparison between RJ Abbarientos and J. Castro.

Yes, but I was just implying that decision making isn't among Castro's upside specially during his younger years.

BTW, how was Castro's overall performance in the 2014 World Cup? Wasn't he most of time been bothered by the size of the opposition? Castro was already 28 yrs old at that time.

Yes, like everybody else got intimidated but in Argentina game he had a good first half and Croatia he forced overtime. You have to remember he was injuried at that time thats why he didn't play in Asian Games and almost didn't played in WC 2014.

He did good on OQT 2016.

I say, moving forward, as RJ gets more experience in high level basketball & playing under coach Tab's system, he'll learn to become more prudent & disciplined with his game.
Agree. If there is one thing about Coach Tab, it's the seriousness with which he goes after the objective. Thirdy Ravena was much the same way in his younger years, highly undisciplined, playing to the crowd, and generally going against the system often. But the way Tab harnessed his energy and athleticism and put refined discipline to his game was a marvel to watch, the consecutive UAAP championships as proof. RJ, for all his youth, odds are he can be refined and shaped much the same way and be productive for years to come.

Here's my take on this. RJ is actually good. He is a good penetrator and scorer. He is like the Alapag and Castro. However, it will be very difficult to pass the ball to Kai or Kouame if you are 5'11 and you have a 6'6 guy in front of you. Same problem with SJ.

Among the amateurs, who is the tallest point guard that we can get?

                      • Matt Nieto, 1GDL, Dalph Panopio, all are in the 6-feet-flat to 6-foot-1 height

The thing is that, we have no way of knowing how a 21-year old Castro would have played against an elite level Asian opponent or a world level opponent. On the other hand we are seeing how a 21-year old RJ Abarrientos play in those level while exhibiting exceptional guts & confidence in his game. Wala tayong nakikitang felling of being intimidated, nerbyos, & jitters in RJ's game. Those things are not taught eh. Its more of a natural trait ng isang tao.

I thought there was a plan of converting Thirdy to a PG in Japan. Did they ever try it? If Thirdy can only be converted to a PG then that would a good solution.

I am not sure about that, SanEn played him mostly at the 2 or even 3 because they have guys who are smaller than him. Playing him at 1 not only solves some of SanEn's problems, it also develops him into a true PG.

They tried playing him at 1 sometimes and usually results in TO
