  • I wonder why MVP will resign this early? they already spend alot of time, effort and money just to get the World Cup Hosting.

    • suddenly realized that if the SMC takeover is true, then this will effectively end Chot Reyes' dream of coaching Gilas in the WC (again) and the Olympics. As IPC has said, the SMC group has a lot to prove, and for the sake of Philippine Basketball I hope they perform well, they need to adopt Danding's 80s NCC model for the long term program.

      • Man is MVP trying to wash his hands off of this after working so hard to get the hosting rights for the World Cup? I am thinking Vargas and the nativist groups have stronger ties with the other stake holders like PBA and UAAP so he couldn't kick him out and bring Tab in. This is the worst decision he could make. SMC under Al Chua has no record of developing players much less an international level team. Getting an NP candidate who is good for Fiba is not simple as you think. We were lucky with Blatche. Just imagine how stagnant our offense would have been if we got McGee.

I would look at candidates similar to Kouame's profile, tall defensive big as a option. So even if we get Kouame back we won't change our play style.

yah, he moved heaven and earth to secure that the country will host the WC, me thinks this has something to do with finances, maybe MPIC real bosses (Salim and co) decided to pull the plug on MVP and his side projects..hmm

          • ^^ That's what i thought too. Maybe the golden goose has laid its final egg and MVP's pocket is not limitless.... and as chairman of a very large conglomerate, his priorities are to please Metro Pacific's board of directors and the stockholders, and not the SBP.

So that maybe that's the reason.

just connecting the dots also, this maybe the reason why they are having difficulties keeping Mikey, Kiefer and the Ateneo boys like Dwight and SJ..and the best course of action the MVP group could do would be to ban them from playing in the country unlike their rival SMC who barely has any issue regarding poaching since they are willing to overspend. I guess the pandemic hit the MPIC businesses hard and they need to conserve their resources for now

              • If that's case I'm hoping MVP Can still keep his 3 PBA teams...i can't imagine PBA without them literally SMC league na yun as much we hate PBA we still need them.

UST will be crazy to reject Alfrancis and his proposal take over its basketball program now. It may not be SMC per se, but it is by virtue of association. UST under quasi-SMC will challenge MVP's last grasp on basketball domination, its own holy grail : college basketball with Ateneo

Contraction is the solution if money is tight. They can merge their 3 teams to at most, 2. Or just a Super Team of 1... like the TNT olden days of Jimmy A + Taulava + Carrey

This would make sense. SMC is probably hit hard too. But since it is a real Filipino company, not just Filipino fronted, it has more leeway to keep on pleasing its Filipino fans.

Abando apparently turned down a Korean offer. Goes to show these guys are well taken care of.

As for MVP resigning, I guess I’d cross the bridge when I get there. For all we know, these could be another one of Snow’s kuryente rumors.
Never look too far ahead. You might stumble on a block right in front of you.

UST (and Letran) might become the breeding ground/nursery school/farm for Gilas prospects once SMC fully takes over SBP similar to what MVP/Tab has done with Ateneo and Danding to DLSU during the 80s. So true, the Dominicans would be crazy not to accept this offer.

It sad to see the downfall of MVP,, but empires come and go, MVP being on the bad side of the outgoing admin could have also affected the financial standing of the MPIC which led to this scenario. Plus the passage of the Public Services Act which opens up the market will eventually challenge MVP/MPIC's stronghold on the telecom industry. As GoPilipinas had mentioned I hope MVP will still maintain their 3 teams in the PBA as it balances the SMC monopoly. But I have a feeling that the MVP bloc is operating on a tight budget, they cant even lock Mikey Williams, while SMC./Northport didnt break a sweat with Bolick

edit: I hope Snow's kuryente lang as Noinu stated, we need MVP to counter SMC's greed

He had 8 championships at SMB then baka it will translate sa FIBA... hahahahahahahaha!!!! seriously, I have no issues if SMC will take over but as we talk about here, Can Long Hair accepts that foreign coach can do wonders for Gilas? Can he develop FIBA size/fit players? Can he find perfect fit for our NP? and lastly, Can he sacrifice his 3 teams for FIBA tournaments? You know LH's top priority is to dominate PBA first... Another problem is who among SMC players (below 30's) are fit to play in FIBA and eligible to play (Sans Junmar)? Because it's only Scottie, Perez, TR7 are only fit to play for Gilas eh.. Most of their players are ineligible to play as locals while others are too old to play (Japeth, LA, Lassiter, Arwind)...
It’s becoming more and more doubtful that we will be a top 4 team in FIBA Asia at the very least post-WC 2023. From the way things are developing, the SBP is content with the revenue the Gilas program is bringing forth. They do not care about grassroots development or forming a strong national team.

Just look at their strategy from the U16 onwards: recruit fil-foreigners and rely on talent to win.

Bullshit. I cannot take this team seriously. Fucking glad I didn’t buy any WC tickets.

Then ask him to sacrifice for the nation, stop his personal dreams that could take him out of SBP.
