      And

With US college kids for the 10 day Asia cup in Jakarta, which is in conflict with the NZ NBL season (so availability is a problem), realistically for Asia cup players have to be available for 3 weeks which is unrealistic for NZ NBL players .
Any chance Samuel makes the lineup?

Samuel v Tamayo is a match up I’d like to see.

For the 3rd window? Yes , but he's not one of the favorites to make it . At PF Delaney, Vodanovich and Harris are ahead of Samuel.

For Asia cup it's conflict with Saints schedule

            • Not sure why they had to bring 3 small PGs to the Korea tuneups. Maybe they want to test out SJ and RJ but if all hell breaks loose they will bring in Kiefer? Chiu also will be a target practice for the Sokors. Given he can bang bodies with Ratliffe but the Sokors are either going to run him to the ground or PNR him to death. Bit I guess we need to see him play. No better time than now.

Not much size upfront. but they are non-bearing games . I hope they get reps there as much as training and real feel for the game as a group, and to assess their competitiveness.

BTW, SJ and RJ beat the Koreans 2x last year so they have every right to be there, maybe in practice they beat Ricci and Thirdy. KF is there as the starting point guard in waiting

Maybe in youth team was last time he played some SF, he's gained weight and plays mostly PF and is to slow especiall defensively for wing, the.main SF for NZ (are in the pool) are Abercrombie and Taki, wiing Rustbatch also plays a lot of SF, especially if Corey Webster returns as the main gunner (SG).
Harris and Daleney are more capable combo forwards as well.

                  • Spot on : Skilled incompetence, it's a cultural systemic thing

The worst level of skilled incompetence is when it becomes a culture. Argyris describes it this way: "What we don't see so clearly is how leaders/managers' skills can become institutionalized and create disastrous side effects in their organizations."

WHEN Team Indonesia upset Gilas Pilipinas to win the basketball gold medal in the 30th Southeast Asian Games held in Hanoi, Vietnam last month, fans of the sport worldwide saw the end of the 33-year dominance of the Philippines in Southeast Asian basketball. This loss is but an iceberg's tip of complex problems.

Sorry ha, this is not only true for the SBP , but includes leaders running Kai's camp, I'm only saying it as it is .
The worst symptom of skilled incompetence is "when an organization takes on a culture that cannot tolerate straight talk

U may be surprise we may be talking about one and the same group of individuals

He and Thirdy are the only 6'2" guys in recent memory that are successful at defending from the 3 position internationally. At least from what I've seen. The rest I've seen are Gabe, Dwight, Navarro, and probably MGR, all 6'4" and above. You're more likely to find good wing defenders from the latter taller group, although their length and defensive instincts also helped.
Agree with U about Abueva, especially on the unique aspect. Likewise, I also see Abueva as a natural small forward & while he is undersized in that position especially in the FIBA level, he more than compensates for such shortcoming with his work ethic, high energy, aggressiveness & hustle. Abueva isn't really that skilled as compared to other small forwards out there like a Rayray Parks or a Matthew Wright. His shooting is suspect & his ballhandling isn't really that of a natural wingman, but as I've mentioned, he more than compensates for them with his game attitude. Yung iba kasing wingmen, skilled nga but kulang sa activity, hustle & aggressiveness.

I think the best version of Abueva in Gilas uniform was the 2015 Abueva with Gilas under coach Tab. I think coach Tab really brought the best from Abueva in that time. I say Abueva was among the best performers of Gilas in 2015 together with Blatche, Castro, & Romeo. Not too many people have noticed it but I really believe that Abueva, along with Castro, are the best slashers & fast break finishers of Gilas in 2015. I like Abueva's aggressiveness in always attacking the defense. The thing with Abueva as compared to Gabe Norwood is that, Abueva has that scorer's mentality that is why he has that confidence & sense of necessity to score - something that Norwood lacks becoz Norwood is just too passive on the offensive end most of the time. During transition situations for instance, Norwood would rather back off & wait for his teammates to set up instead of trying to score in transition opportunities. On the other hand, if it is Abueva being on that same situation, he will most likely push the ball & attack the defense in transition.

I think coach Tab really needed Abueva's scoring that time since the Gilas team was depleted as guys like Junmar Fajardo, Jeff Chan, Paul Lee, Japeth Aguilar were not available for national team duty.

Now, imagine if Abueva is 2 inches taller (Of course I mean, the 6-foot-4 version of Abueva also having longer wingspan than the 6-foot-2 (barely) Abueva), I think he would be more serviceable for Gilas.

Could be, and I'm actually happy that Abando would be tested in the Korea tune-up games.

                          Exactly. I think so too.

In terms of pure basketball talent, some may argue Parks is at least in top 7 best fiba eligible Filipino players.

I mean you said it yourself, even though you kinda dont want him, you will still be happy to have him. (It is an oxymoron but makes sense)

I am maybe listing him in my wishlist/dream list, but ofc, I am aware that it is asymptotic to impossible that he will play for Coach Chot and MVP in Gilas. (Hopefully, it change in the future when other is handling gilas)

But as I said, we have replacements for him naman. Perez, Thirdy, Oftana, Dwight, and maybe even Dave.

                          • Hope Calvin Oftana gets a Gilas call up once again. I think Oftana is a better prospect at the small forward position than Kobe Paras. I can see Oftana's ball handling improving in his stint with NLEX, although in that game vs. SMB, naagawan sya while bringing down the ball. Well, its part of experience. I want to see Oftana's mettle in the Asian level.

And he's trained under Tab's system before, and he's a good defender at the 3-spot. I do hope he does get another call up, and that he's designated for Gilas.

Shame he didn't take that Japan offer. Might have been available for the Asia Cup and some windows.

And I think he is a better shooter too. Last time they played together for Gilas in one window. oftana had better performance.

His defense though, I am not sure. He is not bad, but definitely not great either.

Though, I am not closing the door on Kobe. Sayang din e. He is a 6'6 athletic Forward. He just needs to improve on some facets on his game
