Yup. To deal with the capital required means dealing with vested interests.

-Per Sonny, poaching is a concern (SJ, Balti, etc). Stakeholders (PBA, UAAP, and NCAA) are meeting regarding this.
-Per Sonny, SBP is not planning only by itself and they are very "inclusive", plus they don’t want another "lesson learned" scenario.
-Per Sonny, Filipinos will support Gilas because Filipinos know that SBP prepared Gilas well.
-Per Sonny, new naturalized players are on the table. On the radar of CCR.
-According to Sonny, he cannot say whether the lineup will be all amateur or all pro in 2023. early to know the team composition.
-Per Sonny, Al Panlilio is strongly urging FIBA to reconsider the ruling on age and passports.
-Per Sonny, there are attempts to talk to foreign leagues.
-Per Sonny, 2 weeks of FIBA release clause on foreign teams is not enough (LOL, turning a blind eye to PBA).
-Per Sonny, NBA players have enough time to prepare with their national teams (LOL WTF?)
-According to Sonny, the MVP group is reaching out to San Miguel to collaborate on WC 2023. group is also approached. The government also.
-Per Sonny, there will be a meeting today with Pat and Ronny regarding 3x3 (LOL no plans to coordinate with C2G)
-Per Sonny, SBP looks to revive the youth 3x3 program. SBP will also have a coaching clinic and referee clinic.
-Per Sonny, no hard decision yet on Asia Cup composition.
-Sonny says sorry when he was not able to talk because of the “toxic” situation (LOL)
2 weeks of FIBA release clause on foreign teams is not enough: Compared to availability for tournaments proper. Remember 2019, where the PBA gave the players 2 weeks of training, which compounded the fact that the team we sent was not the best?

NBA players have enough time to prepare with their national teams: Well, the fact that their offseason starts in June helps in preparation. Compared to the PBA, whose schedule runs though July to August.

Cannot say whether the lineup will be all amateur or all pro in 2023, MVP group is reaching out to San Miguel to collaborate on WC 2023: In my opinion, just take June Mar, Perez, and probably Scottie and Japeth in the pool from the SMC group, and then Kiefer, Bolick, and Oftana, and have them train and play together with the other guys. For the rest, I'd rather take the Tab group, plus the new additions to the pool for this upcoming window if they perform well.

SBP will have a coaching clinic and referee clinic: Better adjust the coaching and officiating to FIBA rules. As to coaching clinic, have Nenad and possibly Tab lead the clinics, in addition to other good foreign coaches that they have.

No hard decision yet on Asia Cup composition: Just get this pool to the Asia Cup. PBA's in full swing, and I'd rather not see reinforcements if it's just TNT players (except for Tungcab).

Ateneo does have a good development program, especially in college. Too bad SBP won't really let it translate to Gilas Youth. Wonder why.

Yeah they have a good program just a limited one since the UAAP is nowhere near D1 basketball.

Lets face it. The role of a PBA Commissioner is just being a spokesperson for the league, and a go-getter for the team owners / governors. Like go get me this player from this team. Gone are the days when the position has much authority to go tell a team owner to go fuck yourself. Im exaggerating of course, but there was once a time when the first commissioner Leo Prieto was so respected, even the chief of the dreaded Philippine Constabulary in the Martial Law years succumbed to his orders to release the Toyota-Crispa players from jail after a game of basketbrawl.

I guess the U16 and U18 training pool is the de facto national youth training program now. Kai, Carl, SJ, Dave have been part of it. We just hope the U16 and U18 players now actually learn skills that will make them competitive internationally. Not just dribol drayb.

              • Barios, Vargas and Panlilio are the poison in SBP. That is why our program is regressing and Coach Tab hates it.

Sir Steve sorry but I haven't watch nor heard(sound bit) about SBP's plan on any grassroot development program the way other sports agencies are doing? try-out pa rin ba pinaka diskarte nila for talent identification just like the way they formed our U16 and U18?

                    You're very correct.

I remember having saying like that some years ago in which a certain Pinoy IBNer strongly objected & insisted that the PBA Commissioner has so much power & authority in the league. Power & authority my ass!!!

That's a complete stupidity. Its like saying all Pinoy politicians are noble & honest. We all know that the most powerful personalities in the PBA are the Board of Governors & team owners. The PBA Commissioner acts as a spokesman & a puppet in strings.
"A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

i think to be succesful are team has to be known for defense, and the players selected are good all around defenders
I share the thought on defense. It must be the foundation of the team. Offensive-minded teams can only get us so far if we don't have a good defense, especially considering that we ain't that good offensively compared to other teams in the world and even in Asia.

That's why I've been repeatedly saying that defense must be the solid base starting from the youth level. It must be the identity of Gilas, for the present and the future.

Man, I hope Tab and Nenad could be used to teach FIBA defense for our local coaches in the youth level, especially to those in the Gilas Youth. Otherwise, coaches for Beda and Ateneo (HS and college), as well as MVP's PBA teams will do.

Coupled with this news, it was a great decision for me to finally swear off Gilas. Hopefully the Filipinos follow and support leagues that promote development instead of instant profits.

it is not ideal but i disagree. if a handful U16 players eventually go to U18, and then become role players to the NT while in college; then we now have a base pool of players to get from aside from players from outside the countries and players who developed later on. since my assumption is they are already part of the pool, they would then be training as a group already even if there is no assurance that they make any of the team on any window. with that in mind, when they finish college and be in any league, they would still have base knowledge of the plays. so, not ideal, but having 2 weeks training should still be workable.

but that is technically saying we have an agreed program across stakeholders

Good idea, that is actually an extension of my call to have the same system across all levels, from youth to seniors. Of course, we need to have an agreed training program across stakeholders, like you said, and the system being implemented should be successful in the FIBA level.

The 2 weeks should be for those in need of refreshers, those who have trained in the same system. That's why I'm kinda comfortable with the fact that most of the players in the current pool come from the Tab group.
