If not Tab, then Chito Victolero and/or Goldwin Monteverde could do, and I think the latter two need coaching experience in the FIBA seniors scene. We also need players like Thirdy, Dwight, Ange, Navarro, Balti, and maybe Calvin Oftana (later in the year, maybe in August), who can fill holes in the defense.
I would love for Goldwin to handle the Youth program as well.

At least Chot's kinda making an effort to adjust offensively. Need a better defense.
I hate to agree with U on this but history tells me you're absolutely right. But to Chot's credit, he beat Korea in that semifinal showdown of the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship held in Manila which of course was very historic.

The 2 Gilas wins over South Korea last year only indicates that coach Tab knows how to beat the Korea. Tab knows how to defend the koreans.

But Vucinic's presence is hardly being felt so far (you know what I mean). Well maybe not yet since this current Gilas SEA Games team only had limited time of training.

It's also probably the players. Tab's 2021 team executed better offensively and played better defense than the PBA pros, and had better players on D at the 3, 4, and 5 spots. The younger guys looked sharper and more willing to learn.

Granted, we had no choice at the time, but that was a success as far as FIBA is concerned.

That 2013 win, we defended SoKor better. We had Tab and Norman Black, two defensive coaches, as assistants in that win. Marcus Douthit and Ping kinda helped too.

              • I remember about a year ago, there was this debate/discussion here at IBN about which has the better wings serviceable for FIBA competitions, PBA or the Gilas cadets.

PBA had Wright, Pogoy, CJ Perez, Parks, Norwood as its top wings. Gilas on the other hand have Thirdy, Dwight Ramos, Dave Ildefonso, Kobe Paras, Will Navarro, Rey Suerte as its wings.

I think it has become obvious that Ramos & Thirdy are doing better than Wright & Pogoy playing in FIBA or other international tourneys. I think among the PBA wings, its Perez & Parks who could be shoo-ins if ever they are named to the Gilas pool. But then again, they're availability would be a huge question mark. Perez is with SMC, while Parks' willingness to play for Gilas has always been a question mark

I strongly believe that in a year or 2, Dave Ildefonso will be a shoo-in for Gilas at the wings.

                • After the SEA games, Chot will probably have most of our younger players at his disposal. Now is the time to pick players who have good size and mobility and might be trainable for smaller positions. We dont have many bigs though. So I agree younger guys like Quiambao should be included.

I havent seen Chot train guys for smaller positions. I only heard him say we only have short players thats why we do DDO. He will have a chance now or at least his assistants. Because he will be busy in the PBA.

Like I said in the qualifiers thread, the PBA's in conflict with not only the Asia Cup, but also every one of the WC qualifying windows. Good news is, colleges won't have their season in the FIBA Asia Cup, and three of the four remaining windows. So no choice but to call up the B.League boys and college players. Hope for good-sized players at 3, though. We'll need Navarro, Lopez, Javi, and maybe Anonuevo, Lazaro, Torculas, and even Caelum.

Yes. This is what I was saying. Im just trying to emphasize developing players with potential to international size positions. Tab did it with decent results. Will Chot do it? This is the time for him to do it if he has plans to.

                      • I just think that this loss to Indonesia would be a blessing in disguised as it would motivate Gilas, SBP & coach Chot to work much harder for future international competitions specially in the coming Asia Cup & the 3rd window of the 2023 World Cup qualifiers.

We need this rude awakening to make things better.

If this loss to Indonesia would translate to the betterment of Philippine basketball, then I'll take it without any hesitation. In all honestly, I don't give a damn about SEA Games basketball

                        • Get Goldwin Monteverde in the staff?: https://twitter.com/karlolovenia/sta...m5Z7f6Gc59GJ4A

He makes use of talent, has a good system on offense predicated on pushing the pace, can coach good defense, with which he actually beat Tab in the UAAP finals.

Same take here. I look at this as a much needed slap to get the SBP back to reality.
