    • So the concern is really development of basketball. Well, that's a challenge, because outside of a few programs, that hasn't really been a strength of PH basketball as a whole.

      • You cant look away from the facts that since hagop rule has been implemented;
        - There have been more international NBA players. 113 is the all time high just 4 years ago. 107 this season.
        - A record high in International NBA draftees. 29 drafted in 2016. 14 last year.
        - More international clubs playing in Summer league and preseason. Mexico will also be part of the G League. (Note: Philippines used to play games against NBA teams. Washington vs PBA).
        - NBA and FIBA working together to promote Basketball Africa League.
        - more teams have been added to the world cup.
        - A record high in US College. International players have been all over that circuit. 117 just in the NCAA bracket. That doesn’t include teams not in the bracket, d2, d3, naia.
        - If you look at some countries they have all time highs in college players in the US.
        - In Youth tournaments Canada has been able to upset the US, Mali was able make it to the finals first african team to do so. There has been better teams.
        - basketball has been the most popular sport in terms of participants in some countries.
        - 2021 NBA All-Star game featured a record eight international players from eight different countries

You cant honestly believe that more international players in the NBA due to the Hagop rule. If anything its because top talents end up in Europe or US D1 so they are further developed instead of staying in there home country. Globalization of the sport is the main culprit not the Hagop rule.

This. Basketball is a global sport now. If anything it hinders the development of baskeball. Could you imagine how strong Vietnam, Thailand etc is if the Hagop rule is abolished?

This. Interest in basketball grows when teams do better. And with interest comes investment and further growth of basketball programs.

                Hmmm.

Basically, they are requiring passports before 16 years old, .so that high chance these players can play for their respective countries youth programs.

AJ never developed his basketball skills in Philippines. But he played for Batang Gilas.

Hagop is open for change and proposals naman pala.As long as it is for the better of
Global Basketball. He is not a person who will not even listen about suggestions. (Though I hope he is saying it with all his heart)

One Reason why Philippines are really pushing for the amendment of hagop rule is because of players like JC and Remy Martin. Making them locals + an addition of NP instantly make Gilas an Fiba Asia Contender, and more world level country

Yeah AJ is not a product of our youth programs. Just like Caelum and Dalph. If FIBA eligibility was really about youth development they'd have residency requirements. Its not. Its just anti hugot which is why they should just change the rules to something similar to FIFA. Because I wouldnt consider someone like Remy more of a hugot than someone like Caelum.

                  • I think what Noli Eala was implying when he said that he hopes FIBA would consider allowing each team one ineligible player with bloodline connection to the team, is what posters here described as a "heritage import". They are the players who are considered naturalized players by FIBA but are considered natural-born citizens or locals of the country they represent. Standhardinger, Pringle, Clarkson & perhaps Remy Martin fall into this category. Now if FIBA pushes thru with this idea of allowing each team one heritage import, then we can have Clarkson as our heritage import & Kouame as our naturalized player.

Which makes me wonder if those Qatari players of Bosnian descent (with no Qatari bloodline) that play as locals in the Qatar national team really help the development & improvement of Qatar basketball?

Don't these Bosnian-Qataris just take away spots & opportunities from "genuine" Qatari local players?

Walang pinag kaiba yan sa isang professional team having as many as 5 or 6 imports. Puro imports na lang ang gagawa, yung mga local players eh wala ng opportunity to showcase their wares. Try to put 5 imports on a team like San Miguel Beer & see what happens to the games Fajardo, Lassiter, CJ Perez, Tautuaa, Romeo.

Basketball has always been a global sport. Also could you imagine how strong already established powerhouses if the Hagop rule is abolished? So wouldnt it affect all countries? Therefore not having an effect anyways in terms of competition? But yes more US based or NBA players will be playing in FIBA tournaments which would be good for the eyes. JLin bros, Juzang bros, Divicenzo, Nigerian and Puerto Rican etc.
