We need bodies at the wing. There's the danger of 3-guard lineups. But, that's why Spencer and Dwight could be welcome sights, since both are 6'4", and are strong, and play defense. Might be able to defend the 3.

Is Oftana part of the pool now?

in the pba tho, i think he can be a decent role player.

ambohot, on the other hand, i think can be an athletic type of 4 for gilas. not to skilled but he's as tall as arana, but more agile and has a decent stroke from outside. he just needs to bulk up a tad bit.

Take note that Tab coached against Balti for many years so had a first hand basis to judge that he had the potential to be a big SF for Gilas. Also, Chot does not have a similar training program.
Just hope Arana can develop into a serviceable big who can play some 4. And I do worry that Chot does not have a similar program as Tab, to train Arana as a FIBA 4, like Balti and Tamayo.

Maybe a taller, but slower Pingris?

My problem is with the 3 small guard lineup.
The problem is the small guards usually are undersized to play the 3. A 3-guard lineup would be nice if the third guard is Dwight, Parks, James Spencer, or anyone else 6'4" and above. Strength and/or length would be nice too.

          • Point Guard: SJ Belangel closes the game for Ateneo and is steady. RJ Abarrientos shoots and makes a lot of 3-pointers and free throws. Kiefer Ravena from his SEA Games showing is shaky considering the competition. Dwight Ramos has shown he can play the point.
SG: Thirdy Ravena is more of scorer and he has strength to match-up. Dave Ildefonso is bigger than Thirdy, can score and defend, definitely has speed. Dwight can also play this position with SJ or RJ.
SF: Kobe Paras can hit 3-pointers but he has to lift weights, i don't see cuts in his muscles yet like any athlete. Like Dave has big cut biceps who can swing at SF. Zavier Lucero can play forward positions and can get really hot. Jordi Gomez de Liano is a raw talent, tall shooter and has handles.
PF: Justine Baltazar and Carl Tamayo can play frontcourt positions. Balty with his length and Tamayo with his bulk. Michael Phillips is pure adrenaline, makes putbacks and chases loose balls.
Center: Ange Kouame has dipped his game this UAAP from what i saw when he was with Coach Baldwin. They must take care of his diet. It's ideal if Kai Sotto plays, our team gets better. I'm not yet familiar on other names aside from UAAP so i'll check.

Ron Harper Jr is only listed at 6'4 without shoes but has a 7' 1 wingspan ( this guy i'm telling you can play big for Gilas and be very effective)

True, plus he'll be cheaper to insure than Clarkson.

                    Welcome to IBN.

It's a choice between Kouame, Lucero, and Michael for the naturalized player spot, since the latter two look ineligible. Still, all of them are assets to the national team.

Re: Jordi, yeah, like you said, he's raw at this point. Needs to be able to defend. Good thing is he's seeing time at 3 despite his size.

Kobe on the other hand needs to defend and hustle for him to be considered. Work off-ball as well. He can score and pass already, needs to fine tune the latter.

Other names outside the UAAP are Calvin Oftana, Bolick.

i am placing my bet that Michael Philips will eventually become a local due to residency.

                        • Cholo Anonuevo (FEU) is also worth a good look. He is currently injured but i saw him play once. Really a workhorse on defense and can also score i guess at 6'5" he plays wings. CJ Cansino at 6'2" SG (UP) can string 3-point shots, anchors the zone defense and scores on motion sets and hussle points.

Yeah, I think Anonuevo should be considered for the FIBA Asia pool, or even the windows. He can be good for us at the 2 or the 3.

Cansino could use development as a combo guard. As long as he only sees time at 2 or even 1, that will be fine for Gilas.

Xav Lucero is one and done right? I like this Philiips guy, a bit raw but pure hustle. Speaks perfect tagalog too. I hope he go the Slaughter route and be granted eligible-as-a-local status.

Speaking of, Is James Spencer eligible to play as local? I read somewhere in thio forum that FIBA approved him to play as a local and not as naturalized.
