Originally posted by ja.he View PostThe problem with our system why we still keeping on producing small or undersized players is that coaches have the very wrong notion of small ball.
Like on my previous posts, my examples of small ball 5 are Brazil (that beat Greece who are taller by 8 cm than Brazil), Dominican Republic (the smallest team in the World Cup), Tall Black (both World Cup and the 2020 1st Window), GSW Hamptons 5, and the small ball Rockets.
Brazil:
C - Varejao 6'11
PF - Caboclo 6'9
SF - Garcia 6'4
SG - Barbosa 6'3
PG - Huertas 6'3
New Zealand:
World Cup:
C - Loe - 6'11
F - Fotu - 6'8
F - Abercrombie - 6'6
G - T. Webster - 6'4
G - Ili - 6'0
1st Window (during the big run in Guam game):
F - Vodanovich - 6'7
F - Te Rangi - 6'7
F - Ngatai - 6'5
G - Rusbatch - 6'5/ G Prewster 6'4
G - Ili 6'0
GSW's Hampton's 5:
F - Green - 6'7
F - Durant - 6'9
F - Iguodala - 6'6
G - Thompson - 6'7
G - Curry - 6'3
Small Ball Rockets:
C - Tucker - 6'6
F - Covington - 6'7
G - Gordon - 6'3
G - Harden - 6'5
G - Westbrook - 6'2
Those fives on the floor are not supertall but not short and are very versatile in offense and defense.
In PBA, LITERALLY small ball teams:
SMB (Fab 5):
C - Fajardo - 6'10
F - Arwind - 6'4
F - Lassiter - 6'2
G - Ross - 6'1
G - Cabagnot - 6'0
Magnolia:
C - Sanggalang - 6'6
F - Pingris - 6'5
G - Lee - 6'1
G - Melton - 5'9
G - Jalalon - 5'8
Ginebra:
C - Japeth - 6'9
F - Jervy Cruz - 6'4
G - Scottie - 6'1
G - Pringle - 6'0
G - Tenorio - 5'8
You see the difference of interpretation of small ball between FIBA teams and NBA teams our PBA teams?
We have the wrong notion of small ball and our coaches are still proud of it and label it as pinoy brand of basketball.
My godness.

Philippine forwards are slow and unskilled.
Litterarally Arwind , Cruz , Pingris cannot dribble more than 4 dribbles down court LOL
I think in Pba only Oftana is SF with some skills. (Fiba Eligible in Prime/ young)
In Non pba, ofc Dwight and Thirdy???
As for PF Baltazar, Tamayo, and Healthy AJ maybe are our best prospects.

It's still lack of height if you factor that these players, even James Yap, first played the center position. Even Arwind is still playing center right now.
Here are the problems in PH basketball IMO.
1. Politics - duh
2. Lack of height - small players forced to play big early on
3. Coaching system - which is pretty much part of politics
That's it.
It's easy to say the problem is systemic without pinpointing anything specific. Hell, throw the kitchen sink also while you're at it.

One of the most memorable moment of the 2019 WC was when Japeth's wide open fastbreak dunk(he was a good 10m away from the nearest opponent) somehow turned into a contested dunk attempt which resulted in a trip to the free throw line instead because the guy doesn't know how to dribble the ball from halfcourt quickly enough, giving one of the opposing player enough time to chase him and contest, that was some good memory. Supposed PBA superstar literally couldn't dribble unguarded from half court.

Here's the solution that most of us can agree here. Train everyone to play the guard position as most of us here has been advocating. That will be the solution to lack of height.
As with Japeth not knowing how to dribble in a straight line, I have to shrug my shoulders.

Let's be real. If Coach Chot is the Coach in 2023 WC.
JC is more fit in his style. (Whether you call it asa sa import style)
Coach Chot and Ange are not compatible with each other.
Now, the Concern will be who will help Kai and Aj in the Bigs Position. Probably Coach Chot still considering Japeth and Junmar in 2023 WC even with limited mins.

Hoops Highlights really advocating Gilas to Play 5 Out.
With our Bigs and Forwards Kai, AJ, Kouame, Baltazar, Tamayo, and probably Japeth/JMF (ofc, coach chot will only choose 3 or 4 from them).
Can we really apply a combination of Dribble Drive and 5 out?
This Requires a Very Shooter Strech 4. And A Good PNR 5.
With ofc, a smart PG.
I dont know what Coach Nenad and Coach Jong's role in Coach Chot Coaching staff. But I hope they add more variations in Dribble Drive. (They have 1 year preparation left, so a lot of time to at least improve it)
