I wouldn't be surprised if the PBA will insist on inserting at least 5 of their players in the final 12 next year when the WC is just a few months away. It's in their best interest to stay relevant.

Well, i only see Erram and Oftana as worthy to be called from the PBA. Adams and Bolick could be but they will depart for either Japan or Taiwan.

I don't see any PBA players worthy for consideration aside from those 4.

So MVP did replace Tab. I dont know what their argument was. But I think this argument was just an excuse for him to fire Tab. I think Ateneo losing Dwight was what did it. But since that could not be a reason for firing Tab it was this argument that gave him an excuse to fire Tab. Maybe Tab got angry that Gilas 19 guys were not renewed. Maybe MVP did not renew them because he wanted Tab out. He took this personally. Tab was successful in creating the first international level basketball development program in the country. His system was successful. Now he forces a system change a year before the World cup. I dont have any confidence with DDO. It worked with a super naturalized player in Blatche. Douthit even was arguably better than Haddadi so in his time was arguably the best center in Asia. Not sure how Chot will do it now. He doesnt have a super stopper like Norwood or Castro in his prime.

For this window alone, even though a lot of the players in the hypothetical roster are temporarily out of action, we would still be seeing:

from the 2021 team that was sent to Serbia: Kouame, Navarro, Baltazar, Dwight, Tamayo, Go
from the PBA: Bolick, Romeo, Erram, Slaughter
from gilas pool: 1gdl, Lopez

Yeah, if we were united, we'd have a good mix of PBA players, overseas players, and maybe amateurs for any competition, mapa-windows, Asian Games, Asia Cup, SEA Games, and the WC.

And honestly, SBP should really stamp its authority over the local leagues. Synchronize schedules for FIBA, allow players to go Gilas when called up.

But all things considered, if I were to pick someone to head the SBP, it would be Ronald Mascariñas. No ties to either MVP or SMC groups, and really works for the development of basketball, as shown in his 3x3 teams. He tried to develop that team, e.

On another note, sorry to plug in my bias, but he's a UPLB graduate and a UP supporter, so there might be a chance we see more UP players in the pool.

Forum shopping. Wow. And for 2023, frankly only June Mar makes sense. Youngest at 33 by the WC. And lobbying for Mikey, really? God, instead of developing players for the future, going for the exemption. If it pays off, good, but if not...

If the PBA wants a piece of representation for 2023, they should be willing to help Gilas prepare for the WC. That means stopping the season at least 2 months before the WC. Are they willing to do that?

It's the PBA. What were you expecting? They're a win-now league. Development isn't a priority for them. They simply want finished products.

The SBP is dangerously headed the same route.

This possibility still worries me. I mean, come on. This window is a golden opportunity to expose and develop young talent, while of course, maintaining competitiveness.

Mikey is already 30. Gilas can only have use for him for only a few years. Tangina, short-term thinking. Malonzo and Green, understandable, since Malonzo is 25 and Green is 20, we can use them for a long time.

I dunno if it's just me, but I think it looks like the SBP is doing the exact opposite of what direction is logical at this point. I hope they prove me wrong in the July 1 and August 25 windows, and are still serious about developing youth to compete beyond 2023.

To reiterate, I'm really worried about the direction.

True. Development program is an asterisk for now.
SBP together chot and pba are on win-now mentality.

Frankly, as I've repeatedly said, SBP's direction is... I dunno. Actually, it should be the development program, ESPECIALLY FOR THESE WINDOWS. Get players to be able to compete internationally, train them for international ball, whether it be positions, skillset, everything.

Now, I dunno. I just hope Chot follows through, and that his plan to play the young players isn't bullshit.

it's good as long as it fits into the PBA's cost-benefit calculus.

Over the past year, as pinoy players sought greener pastures elsewhere, there have been growing fears of an imminent talent drain in the PBA. And now, they're fighting back to stay relevant. Expect more PBA players in the Gilas final 12 next year.

My belief is since we are hosts we showed try our best for 2023. After that we can reassess the program and hopefully move towards something more developmental in nature.

That being said I didnt believe that Tab's program was the program we needed. Something focused on even younger prospects and less focused on the senior game is what I would like to see.

Looks like we're in accord with regards to development. Hopefully, yeah, we focus on even younger prospects who are mature enough to play with the seniors. More development-oriented.

But we need the right program director and coaching staff for this, someone willing to risk and develop younger prospects and make them competitive.

EDIT: Remember when Tab called his team a C Level talent team that sometimes plays at an A Level. I think our priority long term should be to have A or at least B plus level talent.

Thats being an idealist. The moment Tab turned his pick of the UAAP seniors team to being capable of defeating Korea 2x, of almost defeating Serbia, of tying China in a tuneup, all the basketball stakeholders from college to the PBA became afraid because their players were good enough to be pirated by people with more money than them.

What will you expect if you start training guys in HS? They will all be up in arms because they will be losing players earlier.

As for the schools, some have enough talent to win the collegiate leagues, even if they lose out on some talents, which would likely fill their already deep pools.

As for the PBA, come on. Take the challenge of developing players from the ground up. Develop diamonds in the rough, and maybe some can be PBA stars, or can be really fit for FIBA play.

1. Have the team practice for 12 months every year.

Gets naman, but we can practice weeks before the windows, and at least 1 or 2 months before tournaments proper.

2. Call up PBA players, as they are the best players in the country.

Yeah sure, but the FIBA-fit players are mostly for the 1 and 2 spots. For the 3, 4, and 5 positions, I think the amateurs could be better suited for the FIBA game, not just in height and length, but also play style.

3. Not the amateurs, so they won't get recruited by overseas teams.

So what if they get recruited by the overseas teams? They'll be more available for FIBA windows and especially tournaments proper than they would if they played in the PBA. Unbelievable.
