Yuto Kawashima is better than Caelum Harris RIGHT NOW, because he was exposed to good coaching that focuses on fundamentals and the basics. He has more discipline, and Japan's federation is intelligent enough to put him in the position to excel. In contrast, Caelum grew up in AAU circuit, exposed in the American type of game, emphasizing on the ME rather on the TEAM. But Caelum is better skilled, more athletic and overall, have more upside.

There IS actually conflict of interest. You see, the top brass sees Batang Gilas as a feeder team for the UAAP and NCAA teams, and eventually the PBA teams. Is it no wonder that the PBA was so intent in trying to prevent young players from going overseas, going so far as actually threatening them with the ban hammer for draft dodging?

Americans, especially African-Americans, are more athletic than the competition, which why they could get away with the type of game they were and still are known for. American players may be more skilled and athletic individually, but the game of basketball is played by 5 people on a team. No one player can carry a team by himself, the only one that came close was prime LeBron. Not discounting the GOAT's greatness here, but even Michael Jordan had help in winning those 6 championships, he didn't get those all by himself. The Bulls didn't go anywhere when MJ had to 1v5 most of the time because he didn't have help. But once he got real help, he didn't have to 1v5 all the time and he won championships because of it.

Back on topic, Europeans managed to get by and actually compete with the Americans with teamwork and solid understanding of the basics of basketball. And this will also be the best way for Asian teams who are smaller than both Europeans and Americans to compete with the best of them.

It bears repeating, but just because we have been traditionally the strongest basketball NT in SEA doesn't mean we have to act like we are Team USA all the time when we are NOT. And now we're not even the strongest basketball NT in SEA anymore, at least for now.

I will do the most unpopular thing and answer the question objectively.
From an international FIBA and PBA standpoint as an assistant coach, he acutely is one of most experienced coaches, he also has a network of foreign coaches contacts , even US div 1, Kentucky, Calipaari etc .

I think Kawashima has more upside than Harris, taller much more skilled and can actually play defense for his size.

I know we could argue that if he gets his head straight, then sky’s the limit. But didn’t we wish the same thing before with Japeth, Kobe and lately, Juan? I’m not expecting much, and admittedly, I’m disappointed. Good thing we still have Lebron.

Harris is young but I hope he looks at how the Philips brothers are dealing with being pinoy and see some level of inspiration. Harris also needs to know what type of game pinoy fans enjoy the most, which is Scotty/Abueva level hustle. With his athletacism, its a waste if he doesn't combine it with a great motor like Abueva or Michael Phillips.

I know where you're coming bro. Maybe mas mahirap baguhin ang masamang ugali ng player kisa e improve yung skills or basketball I. Q. ng player. Perhaps a coach would rather handle & nurture a less talented & less athletic but with good attitude player than a very skilled & athletic player but has soy sauce in his brain.
