Gilas, on the other hand, barely won against the youth team from Ukraine, Lithuania, and Estonia.

Is the Australian University Basketball League that bad?

The game between Gilas and Ateneo was done closed doors. I wonder if Ateneo didn't want to embarrass Gilas and allowed them to win.
Well to be fair Ateneo lost to alot of teams in FilOil. Won 1 point against G. Anderson's Corsa team and close win against No FSA CSB in Filbasket. Won a small margin against U22 Japant NT that might not be as tough has the U22 of Euro teams.

But lets not give alot of importance to tune up games.

    • Not really an obsession for small players. Rather, we need to put more emphasis on skills and motor of the player.

Of course, I don't want midgets in the team. I no longer want to see Gilas includes Romeo, Castro and Jalalon in the final 12, more so, putting two 5 footers in the five-on-the-floor.

However, putting three skilled, lengthy and athletic players with high motor within the 6'1-6'4 range in the five-on-the-floor will always be welcome.

      Imagine this five:

      G Reyes (prime) - 6'1
      G Lassiter (prime) - 6'2
      G Hontiveros (prime) - 6'2
      F Raymundo (prime) - 6'6
      C Douthit (prime) - 6'11

This is pretty good enough, even against taller oppositions.

Why am I keeping on saying this? Because Philippines has the abundance of players standing around 6'1-6'5. Developing these players to have guard skills is much realistic than producing a 6'6 guard or even a wing. For me, 6'5 and above players can still be taught with guards skills and still end up playing the 4 or even 5 spots. Those players can still end up like RDO or Joe DeVance. If athletic enough, they can end up like Kelly Williams or Jamie Malonzo. It is in the center spot where you really need a 6'8 and above player.

        G - Perez/Pogoy/Abando

I will put emphasis on skills, length and athleticism over height alone.
Did you deliberately not include Kai? Because unless I missed something, I think he should take the place of one of the fringe guards.

I did. Barely practicing with the team and being indecisive as to whether or not he will still join Gilas with just 13 days away. I believe that excluding him from the final 12 is a better choice so as not to disrupt whatever chemistry that has been built by the team.

University League is closer to a social League in Australia as if any good young talent in Aust High Schools quickly get snapped up into US Div1 and secondary talent into US Div2 , what's left over if not giving up playing can play Uni League if they ever decide to go to University , here in Australia most do not choose to go to University as high paying jobs are readily available without degrees.

Ok, thought it was a slip. For me, Kai even with just a 10 day practice would still bring more to the table than our tail end players. I hate the drama but if we look at the bigger picture, we’d rather have insurance on the big spost rather than include someone who might not play at all and is actually a redundance considering how many minutes our NP is gonna log from that guard spots.

For me, I would rather look like a Mexican or a DR team because that will be more realistic than be like Spain or Serbia.
like what i said before when it comes to size we are on par with other national teams its just we lack the skills to play smaller than our size, like a 6'6" is already a center for us while other countries has 6'6" shooting guard

Thats our DNA. We are not a tall team, not atheltic not beefy.

I mean what is the excuse of Euro teams getting a small pg for NP. They can't stop their playera from growing.

Ateneo got trashed by Hakouh University of Japan, it will not be mentioned the same way as the best version of Gilas lost to Dominican Republic

the new generation of players are taller now it is just a matter of honing their skills to play small, as we already have a 7 footer and couple of 6'10" guys to be our frontcourt so those 6'8 and below should be trained to play as small forward and guard

                          • Steve Kerr’s answer when asked about Banchero’s time at the 5, and whether it was a sign of things to come. “He’s gonna play some 5,” Kerr said. “One of the things we really found in [2021] in the Tokyo Olympics was having a 5 who can push the ball and transition and create plays is very difficult for FIBA teams to handle. So he can play some 4, as he showed, but he’ll play plenty of 5, as well.”
