There is still room for them tho, if countries like ARG and BRA could have them on their team (just 1 of them tho, instead of multiple) why not us PH?

The keyword is 1 sub 6 foot PG. Kiefer already took the sub 6 foot slot.

Cant believe Kiefer is only 29 yet he's been playing like his post his prime since the last WC.

        • Malonzo can drive and finish strong , though his dribbling is still unpolished, if he can have Norwood's handle he will really be a good international player for us

          • The next step after moving away from.small guards

Is moving away from.slow bigs (especially at 4 spot). Sorry but internationaly at world.level, guys like Japeth, AJ (post injury) Erran are too slow for the.modern space and pace FIBA game . This is Philippines greatest weakness actually.. it's a gap that when are only legit modern FiBA 4 Malonzo sits , we have to resort to using a wing like Dwight as back up 4. ( yes we are less exposed if we match up in speed as compared to slow footed unfamiliar to perimeter bigs

I always see these guys as natural 5's than 4's.

Well, Facundo Campazzo is built like a tank, is pretty athletic and deceptively strong. That compensates his lack of height.

Yago Dos Santos, on the other hand, is very athletic and super quick.

A prime Jason Castro was like Yago. Well, of course, Castro is already 37, therefore, should no longer be considered for our national team

For me, unless that 5'8-5'10 guard is pretty exceptional, I will not include him. Do you have any player in your mind that plays like Campazzo, Dos Santos, Barea or even a prime Jason Castro?

Yea they are the modern game 5 (can cover PNR), there is a reason why Tab envisioned and was developing Baltazar and Tamayo to be wings, essentially what he was truly saying is they will be modern day FiBA 4s ( which are essentially tall small forwards of the past )

KD, Tatum and Ingram who are NBA SFs are FIBA PFs 4. That's the FIBA game today.

as to small guards , let's not forget it's about levels , regardless of height those NBA south America small guards have the ability to defend , get to the hoop of contact. So unless our small guards.can do the same then it's hard to compete at higher levels.

Yes, I would rather have guys like Japeth, AJ and Erram to man the center slot than the 4 spot. The reason is simple - their skill set as well as their speed/quickness will be better use at the 5 than the 4. You cannot force both Japeth/Junemar and Erram/Japeth on the floor at the same time because we will be slow to defend the PNR and the perimeter.

                    • That a gross generalization of picking athletic over slow center. Well I guess KAT, Looney, Wiseman should be choice over Embiid, Jokic and Lopez. Again it should be seen as totality and not just one factor. Here is the best and worst PnR defenses as of January 2023. If the plauer is not athletic, coaches need to setup a system to minimized this weakness. Like every players

                      • There is an on-going pre-qualifiers for the Eurobasket 2025 pala. Why SBP did not arrange a series of exhibition games against these teams?

The teams participating here are as follows:

                        Croatia
                        Bulgaria
                        Romania
                        Switzerland
                        Ireland
                        Norway
                        Kosovo
                        Albania
                        Luxemburg
                        Slovakia
                        Denmark
                        Austria

SBP could have had a series of exhibition games and tune-ups against atleast 3 or 5 of these teams instead of second and third stringers of Estonia, Finland, Lithuania and Ukraine.

The players fit for FIBA are all ineligible at the moment hehe
Mike Philipps, Brandon Rosser, Balunggay, Lucero, i may add Koon as a big guard or wing...But hopefully after 3-4
                          years maybe.
And if I may be allowed to dream a little bit for the next 4 years or so I expect the following to be our core

                          Kai 7'1
                          Philipps 6'7
                          Malonzo 6'5
                          Ramos 6'4
                          Barefield 6'2 as NP

                          Edu 6'9
                          Tamayo 6'7
                          Balunggay 6'6
                          Lopez 6'4
                          Koon 6'4

                          Chiu 6'10
                          Bayla 6'4/ Konov 6'7/Harris 6'5

Mike Philipps, Kai Ballungay and Zave Lucero if they finished their college here and play in the PBA, we will have more than enough players to man the 4 in the future.

Im actually confident for M.Philipps, Ballungay and Koon as they'll be spending 4-5 years of college w/ Lasal & Ateneo but for Zave, hopeful but not confident
