it just gives you an idea at how young other national team players aee when they 1st represent meanwhile in Philippines 33 year old Newsome is a rookie FiBA player LOL
That is why if we look at our Gilas team in the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship, we got players like Jeff Chan, Tenorio, Larry Fonacier, Jean Mark Pingris who were on their late 20's or early 30's at that time, yet that was their first time to play in FIBA basketball."A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. I don't know if many here at IBN knows this... This is the reason why NBA players who will participate in the FIBA WC this summer can't join their national teams yet until 28 days of tip off... It means, NBA players who will participate can join in their respective national teams starting July 28 (or 28 days before the WC)... So hoping that don't bash JC because he's only available 1 month only... That is due to FIBA - NBA agreement... NBA only give their players in that restrictive allowed days... Other national teams who have their NBA players can't join their national teams either... KP and Bertans can't join Latvia too... same as Vucevic, Luka, Giddey, Mills, etc....
Regarding NBA players, it should be added that there are certain league rules if they go to help their teams. As mentioned above, this was also one of the main reasons why the official training camp starts on July 28, or 28 days before the start of the final tournament. As Emil Toms discovered, there are certain restrictions for NBA players, as, for example, the mentioned 28 days cannot be divided between several periods in the summer. Similarly, previously one of the recommendations was to conduct one training session per day .

This is why I don't like the way basketball is being treated now. It has become too commercialized. Too commercialized for its own good.
That is why I will always love the 90's era of basketball in which NBA players can play for their respective national teams the moment NBA season is over. Guys like the late Drazen Petrovic, Toni Kukoc, Dino Rajda, Arvidas Sabonis, Sarunas Marciliones could play for their respective national teams the moment NBA season is over & with no restriction."A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. The given reality is for overseas players , especially in another region, Amercas or Europe, national team members preparation will always be limited , 28 days is already generous
that is why I really don't buy that the Philippines has less preparation time as compared to world level teams, this is really not true., especially since NT players are all in one city (Manila)

that’s why instituting a long term system/program is important. Euro and Americas team that has a number of nba players (luka, giannis, jokic, sabonis) who were part of their respective nteams as early as 14-15 yrs old, same with their other teammates, thus chemistry, familiarity, gameplan were already part of their muscle memory/brains and a 1 month training camp will suffice
meanwhile the Philippines seems to always reset its program every 2 yrs, no continuity, no long term system, no chemistry and always cramming

Its simply becoz our Asian counterparts have been keeping an "intact" national pools that they maintain for say a 4 or 5-year cycle (or even more than that). These national pools have been playing FIBA & other international tournaments or window qualifiers for 4 to 5 years now (even more). Intact yung national pool/team nila pero yung Gilas pa iba-iba.
The Gilas pool of coach Tab Baldwin in 2020 to 2021 is different from the current Gilas pool of Chot Reyes. Of course meron ding mga holdovers from the 2020-2021 pool like Kai, Dwight Ramos, Kouame, Jordan Heading, Thirdy, Tamayo, pero yung ibang players from the 2020-2021 pool eh wala sa current pool.
We also have this habit of forming a different pool/team for a particular tournament. Take the case of our 2023 SEA Games team, out of the 12 players Gilas players in the SEA Games, only CJ Perez, Chris Newsome & Calvin Oftana are part of the World Cup-bound Gilas pool. Then for the upcoming Asian Games, baka ibang players na naman ang lalaro. We might flood our Asian Games-bound Gilas team with so many Fil-ams who are not FIBA eligible. So paano tayo maka establish ng tamang cohesion dyan?
So I think the best alrernative for the post 2023 World Cup Gilas national team is to form a 24-man pool that will play FIBA games & other international tournaments for a 4-year cycle leading to the 2027 World Cup. At please naman, as much as possible wag na nating dagdagan or bawasan or palitan ang players players sa 24-man pool na yan. Hanggat maari, wag na nating guluhin yung pool.
I think this is the best alternative given the fact that, as you pointed out, we really can't prepare full time & with a complete pool/team for say a 2 to 3 months prior to the World Cup."A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Essentially program vs put together team for a tournament.
which begs the question what happened to the 23 for 23 pool. LoL, did even a core few of those players spend prolonged time together or played more than a couple.of games together, galing ah..... lol
a lesson on how not to run and build a program.
Realize CJ Perez is older than many years Tall Black Tai Webster who debuted in 2014 WC as a 19 year old .. together with a core of 6 others who grew together..Last edited by DAdmiral; 06-12-2023, 10:20 AM.

While almost everyone of us here advocates for the inclusion of a good No. of young players in the Gilas pool (not just for the World Cup), we must also admit that "some" few IBNers here have some flawed mentality regarding this matter.
I remember when Rhenz Abando suited up for Gilas last year, a poster here was quick to judge Abando saying like (not the exact words) "Masyado syang manipis" or "Mahina sa depensa" or "He's not a national team material".
Man, its as if Abando will stagnate & won't improve in the years to come! Kaya nga pinapalaro sa Gilas yan while still young para mahasa so that when he reaches his prime (27 years old & over), he would possibly be ripe & serviceable for national team service. Ang lagay ba eh since merong 33 or 34 year old na mas magaling na shooting guard kay Abando (as of now) eh yun nalang ang ilagay sa natin sa Gilas & never na nating kunin si Abando para maglaro sa Gilas?
That's a flawed mentality. It doesn't take a genius to understand that a 23-year old player has not yet reach his peak. I say a 23-year old version of Michael Jordan wasn't as good as a 28 year old version of Jordan.

Take for instance our current Gilas pool for the World Cup, how cohesive is the pool as compared to other Asian teams like Jordan, Iran, Lebanon, China & South Korea? Definitely Gilas isn't as cohesive.

Carl just begged off from the WC roster due to knee concerns: https://www.spin.ph/basketball/fiba/...-a795-20230612
Oh, no. We just lost one of our few natural fours. Guess we're gonna see more Dwight and Malonzo at that spot, unless AJ makes the lineup.
