  • problem with having a lot of prospects is that there are only a few teams in the PBA so some bright prospects end up benched. PBA should expand so more players get to develop.

    • Why is Chris Koon not as highly touted (to be given exemption as a local) compared to the QMB, Philipps and Luceros?
Im pretty confident on the eligibility and exemptions of QMB and Mike Philipps. While Koon gives Gilas a Dwight Ramos 2.0. And i think he's a much better ballhandler and taller than Dwight. Does he have issues? attitude etc?

Did you see Pinoyliga when DLSU had all their hugot players available? Koon doesn't strike me as a pro-ready player. Bahay does and he's just a rookie. Koon just looks really awkward with the ball in his hands and for whatever reason, him playing too much off the ball without shooting it much is a problem.

              • Koon is a role player at best, if he has that star potential, he couls have led Ateneo to a much higher place last season with his last playing year.

I agree with being a potential role player for Gilas. But finding role players that will work effectively can be just as important as finding high usage players. Just like how a Tuffin or Navarro can be important role players for Gilas. A team with Kai and an NP would need several "right" role players.

Koon is still a rare 6'5-ish player who can handle the ball, shoot and defend (that all important modern 3 and D). During their last championship run, he was routinely used as the primary perimeter stopper. He also showed his athleticism when he posterized vs DLSU. I think him playing with a broken foot one season and then lack of bigs on his last season robbed him of a chance to perform better.

In that wing position, if you're not a star in FIBA, you have to at least defend, shoot or do both at a good enough level. That's why I have Will Navarro in my priority list at wing over a guy like Arvin Tolentino. I think the wing is an important defensive position.

Defense must be emphasized in as many of our young wings as possible.

                    • to unleash that fire in the belly..that assertiveness in his character

I think Chris Koon should be drafted by either CYG of ROS or CCR of TNT

those two former Gilas coaches are known for their motivation.

a lefty 6'5 or a shade of 6'6 PG with a velvety form ala Richie Ticzon and Jordan Heading is a rarity in Philippine basketball.

surely getting an exemption moving forward is beneficial to the Gilas program

                      and it is inevitable.

                      • He's already played like 5-6 years here, 5 years in Ateneo alone. I think the exemption would be given in a year or 2, if SBP will do the process.

I share the same viewpoint. Everyone should be trained as a guard first as a general rule, especially if the kids start playing basketball early. Speed, handle, passing, shooting, perimeter defense. In the same vein, I also think everyone should learn how to screen and rebound as well.

As for big kids who start late, probably depends on their mobility and size.

                          • Imagine if this kid turns out to be great and makes it to the Gilas roster (cant play him against germany or poland)

edit: cant play him against Israel either

They shouldn't have allowed his parents to register that name. Is he even good enough to be recruited by a big school?

kid is not in any leaderboard in any statistical category and his team’s standing is 2-2 and is already out of contention at the nbtc. Safe to say that there would be no scholarship offers from any big programs
