Blatche and even though he is a nationalized player and hasn't lived in the Philippines has been able to do so but I believe it's because of the support he got from team Gilas as well as having a personality which was accepting of this.... I don't know if this would apply to others but it seems that naturalizing Blatche might have been the best thing ever for Pilipinas Gilas.

As long as they start young playing the philippine colors.

          • Bring these fil-foreign Kids (12 years old 6'5 Fil-Assuies and 14 years old 6'7 Fil-Negerian) to Philippines and let them train with Gilas and ask Ranidel De Ocampo handle them and include Kobe Paras too. I think China,South Korea and Iran start to scare with Philippines because these tall Fil-foreign wants to play for the Philippines. I won't be surprise if FIBA ASIA change the rules again about these Fil-foreign.

What about Gabe Norwood who spent his entire life in the US until involving himself with Phi. basketball 7 years ago? Not to put down some of our beloved Gilas players but I think Norwood has played with more fire, guts & passion than some our our homegrown players in the national team so far after 3 games in the world cup. In the past national teams that we had, it seems that the Fil-foreign players have played with more guts & passion than the homegrown Filipino players. I think Asi Taulava is another example of fil-foreign player who have exhibited exceptional guts & passion wearing the Philippine jersey.

I don't know if its just a colonial mentality but from what I observe about foreign-born Filipinos, they are hard-working, confident & passionate on whatever endeavor they want to get involved with. Maybe its becoz of the competitive orientation they are exposed to in the US.

              • Trying to teach the DDO to some teenage Pinoy kids when the NERDS came out to play.

Ballers vs the Nerds (or should I say Revenge of the Nerds)
(pardon the loudness as I was coaching them against these nerds)

Not all are made of Norwood though.

See: Sol Mercado, Jay Washington, etc.

Thing is, it goes both ways. Some players have the passion, some don't.

                    Obviously, yes!

Remember Aquino refusing to play for RP in the 1993 ABC Men's Championship (now FIBA Asia Championship) becoz he was scared of getting injured as he was about to enter the PBA? Remember Aquino's reluctance to play for the 1995 SEA Games-bound RP team becoz of money matters?

                    On Asi Taulava:

Remember Asi Taulava offering his services for the Rajko Toroman-mentored Gilas-1 developmental team a few years ago? You can bet that money has nothing to do with it.

While money made him richer, greed destroyed his reputation.

And reputation is something one can never buy

                          • I kind of remember Aquino playing well vs Wang ZhiZhi? but Menke Bateer is just to big and too strong. Is my memory correct?

That was in the semis of the 1998 Asian Games, Phi. vs. China. I think we lost to China by just 8 pts. & we were the only team w/c lost to China by single digit. I think Marlou scored around 8 pts. in that game, one FG that he made was his patented "under the kilikili lay-up off Wang Zhizhi's defense. Wang was then 21 years old. Wang on the other hand finished with about 12 pts. & made 1 block against Marlou's shot but Marlou retaliated with a block of his own against Wang.

                              Sorry for the OT

actually it depends. In Junemar's case in the CESAFI, he is allowed to shoot the midrange, to dribble the ball in a fast break situation and may choose to opt the slash from the outside ala dray blatche!

He was allowed all that kind of dimension in his years in the CESAFI. If he had a stretch four coach and a defensive coach back then, he would have been the ROY MVP in his first year!
