For me, PBA, SBP, and all the other PHL entities and personalities strongly influencing how basketball is run in this country, should accept with arms wide open this role of being the premier talent developer in the whole of Asia. I say they should do it now, while the developed countries' interest is still with the other popular team sport (football, obviously), because aside from China, e baka madagdagan pa ang kakumpetensya natin in the future. PHL is not lacking in talent. Year after year, especially nowadays, it is producing talents deemed good-enough (skills + size) for the Asia-Pacific region top-tier leagues.
The more appropriate term here should be "PBA is just compelled or forced to make these changes or tweaks". Trying or difficult times "forced" the PBA to make such changes.

Do you think PBA would voluntarily make such changes under normal circumstances?
"A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

actually, it is only China that is our rival in terms of producing individual talents in the East and Southeast Asia. it is evident with the number Asian imports these two countries have across B.League, T1 League and NBL.

i don't know who are the koreans that are currently playing pro overseas outside the one in b.league. taiwan and japan can produce some but not as many as those from the philippines and china.

Nope, because as I've read here in the IBN a lot of times now, changes like that aren't really part of PBA's mandate. That those ideas when put to action just inconvenience them and their business operations. But I hope that's all in the past now and should stay that way. I don't know, maybe I'm just naïve but I really can't help but feel optimistic when I see/hear them PBA people talk of long-term changes that could seriously elevate the status of the league thus bring back massive fan interest.

We'll probably just have to wait until the next EASL season, to see if PBA is really serious in its proclamations on joint-cooperation with its neighbors.

          • "PBA must evolve into a regional league to regain luster: Manotoc"

While I agree, how realistic is this really?

"PBA must evolve into a regional league to regain luster: Manotoc"

While I agree, how realistic is this really?
              Format:

              a. Home-and-away
              b. 4 round regular season. Total number of games for each teams will depend on the number of teams in the league (e.g. 8 teams = 28 regular season games for one team; 10 teams = 36 regular season games).
              c. Back-to-back games for the same teams that played the last game (i.e. Manila vs. Cebu match will be played in saturday and sunday).
              d. 7-7-7 playoff format (if only 8 teams - 7-7 format).

              Players:

              a. 4 heritage players (Fil-Fors ineligible to play for Gilas as locals)
              b. 1 World import of unlimited height
              c. 1 Naturalized player/resident foreigner of unlimited height
              d. 1 Asia-Pacific import of unlimited height
              e. No annual drafts, just sign players the team preferred subject to the salary cap.
              f. There will be a transfer window in the middle of the season which is a period to allow teams to release or sign players from another team or another league or from the free agency. The players are also allowed to transfer provided that the team where such a player will transfer shall bear the remainder of the previous contract of player and the team where such player originated.

              Notes:

              1. If a team hires an Asia-Pac import and a Naturalized/Resident foreigner, it will only be allowed to field 2 heritage players.
              2. No restrictions as to the playing time of Asia-Pac, Naturalized/RF, World imports and Heritage players.

              Teams:

              a. City/Province/Region-based backed by big company sponsors and basketball clubs/communities.
              b. In case of expansion, the league will look on the viability of the prospective team's chosen place taking into consideration the population size, economy as well as the interest of the people with the sport.
              c. An expansion team can no longer pick a place that has already an existing team.
              d. If the league rules that the place is not viable to have a team, the league shall encourage such expansion team represent "bigger" area (e.g. instead of Caloocan, the team is encouraged to represent the whole CAMANAVA area).
              e. If a team decides to withdraw, he should sell the team and the buying-successor team shall carry over the seller-predecessor team's record, history and achievements.

              Marketing:

              a. Teams have full discretion on how they will market their teams.
              b. However, the league will oversee the finances of teams.
              c. Further, teams are required to have livestream their games in Facebook, YouTube and Instagram.

              Execution:

              Inaugural season and 2nd season:

              - 8 teams, preferably places with close geographical proximity (e.g. Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Bulacan, Pampanga and Quezon City).
              - Heritage players, Naturalized players/Resident foreigners are allowed
              - Strengthen teams' presence within their respective areas.

              3rd season:

              - Should the first two seasons becomes successful, expansion can now be explored.
              - World imports allowed

              5th season:

              - Further expansion, if feasible
              - Asian imports allowed

I took this post from the thread I opened.

The reason why our players playing foreign leagues because of what is happening now in the PBA.. If PBA today is good and no toxic guys likes of Marcial, Chua, Vargas, etc.. then i think guys like Dwight, Thirdy will settle here only...
Yeah I'm sure Thirdy, Dwight and co are excited to play as bigmen for Terrafirma and other farm teams for a season then be traded SMC teams after.

James Yap, Calvin Abueva, Romeo, Santos was also popular as Thirdy as today but they are excited to play in the PBA after their college days because PBA before was still OK before this... Is the likes of Yap, Romeo, Santos played center that time?
Oh there's a system in place alright. Systematic farming it is for the mother teams.

There wasn't any farm teams then in the early to mid 2000s. Heck teams like Redbull, Air 21, Sta Lucia were legit contenders before folding up. Unlike now they're only interested in selling players.

My bigman comment was a swipe at Cardel's infamous comment regarding Adams playing the 4.

I don't know you understand my point. What I am trying to say is that although South Korea, Japan and Taiwan indeed produce players that can play overseas pro leagues, it is still not as many as those that Philippines and China can produce. I am even talking to those players that are ACTUALLY playing professional in other countries. I am talking about numbers here. I am NOT including those playing in US NCAA like Lee Hyungjung since, obviously, NCAA is collegiate league not pro.

It's that recently the Philippines only produced players playing overseas than before, right!!! Korea, Taiwan and Japan already doing that since time being.. And you have to think the situation of their mother leagues of each nation.. Japan, Taiwan and Korea's PRO league is in better place than here.. So they have luxury to stay.. Malamang if their leagues have a toxic commissioner like Marcial and Chua then they will also go elsewhere because of situation.. If our beloved league PBA is like KBL, B-League in terms of system, salary, etc.. then the likes of Thirdy, Dwight, etc.. will not forced to play overseas.. I have a question for you.. Do you think the likes of Thirdy will play overseas if PBA is in good system, no farm teams, no height limits for imports and lucrative salaries? Same question also for our people in normal situation in normal jobs.. Kahit ako tanungin nyo if our system here and salary is in level as Korea or Japan then why you will leave.. right?
I don't think it's just the salary and the toxicity of playing in the PBA. Even with the uncertainties this pandemic has brought us. If I were a young single basketball with comparable talent to Thirdy and co I would likely go to Japan too. The media mileage their getting is crazy. Their being treated like rockstars over there. Even Kiefer managed to rehabilitate his image. The culture and sceneries are alluring. Also the "extracurricular activities" if you get what I mean.

Before naman eh may mga feelers na from other leagues likes of Castro, Alapag, Yap, Caguioa, Fajardo but they declined because PBA before (until 2015) still at good status.. PBA before implement no height limit, may Asian imports, OK pa ang attendance, etc..
It's not a well run organisation anymore. Even the popularity of the league has waned. It's not a coincidence that this all started with the EALA getting booted and replaced by incompetent and possibly biased commisioners.

If not for that Tweetie case which got him disbarred, he might have stayed Commissioner for longer.

                            • I've been reading rumors that this coming conference will be CStan's last with Ginebra. I dunno what to make of it, especially given that I couldn't get a verified source for those rumors.
