The saddest part of being a human being is that, someday you will lose all your parents right before your eyes. Its inevitable. The only chance one won't witness a death of a parent is if he dies before his/her parent does, which of course isn't good either to say the least. They say, a child is supposed to bury his parents. Not the other way around.
From LotR: The Two Towers, Théoden says "No parent should have to bury their child."

Condolences to June Mar. His mother was his anchor. Hope he powers through.

IMHO, the minimum salary players and the average earners will suffer from these scheme, and they are the majority of the player's population while the superstars/max paid players can foot the bill. Damn, PBA teams are either too cheap or the pandemic has really hurt their core businesses. This financial woe could be exploited by the Binondo Mafia and the Gambling Lords of Pampanga/Central Luzon.

This is why a union is needed in the PBA. We'll need someone to be the voice of the players, to represent what the players really think. Ang problem lang, kung masyadong buddy-buddy sa owners ang union.

Players union is the last thing SMC people would want to see. Hence, expect assholes like Long Hair & Rene Pardo to do whatever they can to discourage everybody from forming such union. I also expect SMC players not to join players union if ever a union is formed someday. Arwind "Bagyo" Santos is perhaps among the last PBA player that will join a players union.

Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

Discouraging a union is unfair labor practice under the Labor Code.

Even if the SMC players don't join the union, they still form part of the bargaining unit that the union would represent. Hence, they're still represented, even if they don't join.

Nice to know that more or less the PBA can’t stop a player union from developing. I just can’t believe na this Player union has not been materialized yet since the league has founded and its 2021 na for crying out loud! My god PBA, be progressive naman kahit player union nalang, hahay!

Actually, only 20% of the bargaining unit is required to form a union. Forming the union is the easy part. It's winning the certification election (the one where they get to represent the players) that's the hard part. At least 50% of the players have to vote, and the union needs 50%+1 of valid votes cast.

If we conduct that 20% is only equivalent to 32 - 35 agreed players.. Do you think they can get atleast 35 players united to have a union? SMC players + farm teams have their bloc while MVP + BWE players also have another bloc.. For sure it's hard to them to be agreed/united for have Player's union for their sake.. As i said, Unity between all players from each camp is the solution to have "Players union".. Ni maglaro nga sa Gilas eh maarte pa mga PBA players for country's sake...
That's Labor Code IRR. It applies to any union.

                  • biggest problem in unionizing the PBA imho is that no single player in the league can unify these players, either some are content with the current structure, some are voiceless, most are apathetic and the minority, against the system but has no bargaining power (i.e. slaughter)

this generation of PBA players needs a Jaworski type of personality. I hope the incoming batch of PBA players are woke enough to challenge the status quo. (though I think they would rather go to Japan)

                      Correct & well said.

Players that are "content" with the status quo are SMC players, specially Arwind "Bagyo" Santos. You bet "Bagyo" would be among the last PBA players to join a union, if ever there will have one.

Actually, the NBA CBA has a union security clause requiring the players to maintain membership in good standing as long as they are employed. This is a maintenance of membership shop provision. So, basically, all NBA players playing for a team have to be members of the union.

We can't have a union security clause, since there are players who would be against a union kasi kuntento na, as CoJ and JAMSKIE pointed out.

As what Arwind "Bagyo" Santos once said (not the exact words), "Sino ba nagpapa sweldo sa atin? Kanino ba tayo nabubuhay? Di ba sa San Miguel? Kung ganoon eh, sino ang susundin natin?"

                          Masunurin lang naman si Arwind....

likely high chance smb players will never join the players union.

Long Hair would tell the SMC players, "Bakit pa kayo sasali sa union na yan? Busog naman kayo sa San Miguel management ah. Ano pa ba ang mahihiling ninyo?"

SMC and to a lesser extent MVP players have nothing to gain from unionizing, they would just jeopardize their post retirement income, whereas, players from indy teams, farm teams, minimum earners and those on SMC's (Maliksi, Yap, Slaughter) and MVP (formerly Parks) sh*t list will benefit from a union. I doubt that journeymen PBA players who are out of the lague in 3-5 yrs time get the same perks that a Arwind or the Ravenas get.
