    Rules on the draft:

    1. Applicant eligible for draft can opt not to apply but will sit out for 5 years
    2. Player can still apply for draft w/in 3years but will take part in a special lottery
    3. The special lottery includes all the 12 PBA teams, meaning all teams have a chance of getting a player applying through this system.
    4. If player fails to apply in three years, he will have to sit out for another two years to complete the five-year sit-out period
Another addition: the PBA lowered the draft age to 19.

    • question regarding the 5 year ban, when does the count start? the moment the player declines to be drafted or the instance once his contract from a foreign league expires?

These rules are just a big WTF, instead of embracing globalization the PBA is moving backwards, in their heads the board still thinks that the league is second only to the NBA (maybe in terms of age but not in tetms of level of competition and quality)

      • So they created some rules regarding players entering the draft but they didnt address the real problem of the draft which is TANKING. As long as they dont act on that matter, chances are TERRAFIRMA/BW will always end up top pick every year. Wala din kwenta yang mga rules set na yan because at the end of the day farm teams will still get top picks

so if im a player ill just think of ways to avoid eligibilty, (tinalo pa eligibility rules ng NBA draft hahaha) are players still requited to enroll certain number of units in college and play x number of games in the d league to be eligible?

          • The 5 year ban will not hinder the best of the best future Pinoy ballers from playing overseas. However, most of the other players who want to play abroad will at the most get 1 to 2 years contract only. With the new rules, they will surely decline any offers abroad.

Others may say that the new PBA rules are unconstitutional but it seems PBA management is undeterred.

The 19 applies only if the player has studied in college for two years. If you're 22, you don't need additional qualifications, based on my interpretation.

I don't know if the players are still required to play in the D-League.

I believe they could have done it better like Fil-Fors will no longer be eligible in the draft. Instead, they will be considered as free agents like what NBA is doing.

well the oligarchs are just flexing their clout and they are basically above the law, RSA and MVP are notorious for breaking labor laws, preventing laws and consti ammendments that will open up the market, top government ppp contractors and are generous campaign benefactors, they basically run the country, from electricity to food

my god if your interpretation and my understanding is right, once you turn 22 you are automatically eligible for the draft and the pba has dominion over you

I saw no qualifications in the rule change, so yeah, that means automatic eligibility,

With the ban only lasting for 5 years, that's a legal loophole the PBA exploited. It's not a clear denial of employment opportunities.

Someone should challenge this one in the court. Despite of that 5 year ban, this policy is all encompassing. This is too broad to include everyone that has nothing to do with basketball for as long as you are a Filipino male.

Were already qualified in that criteria even they not yet finished atleast 2 years in college? Because we all know if a player played in any gilas games in a fiba sanctioned tournament is already eligible for draft already eh?
The only qualification for age 19 is 2 years in college. And for age 22, there's no qualification. No mention of the D-League or participation in FIBA events, none whatsoever.

Abarrientos, on the other hand, is already 22. He's already eligible.

hmmm PBA in the long run could be competing with the college teams for talent, though college teams ( through boosters) have the edge, tax free incentives and under the table payments

but atleast this could end the 24-25 year old student athlete (when i was that age i have my graduate degree and already teaching while they are still playing college ball)

wondering if high school graduates 1 year after graduation can enter the league w/o college units since it is not indicated in the new draft rules

edit: this rule is probably to address the types of Dwight Ramos who are tiers above the college competition and probably getting interest from the other empire, this could also be a knee jerk reaction to lock the likes of Kai and Lebron

That's ridiculous.. it's not their fault if they have numerous offers overseas...
The PBA doesn't want to be a Fil-foreign retirement league. That includes homegrown Fil-foreigners, unfortunately.
