Now, if the PBA tries to expand outside the Philippines, that could translate to selling broadcasting rights which translates to $$$
What regular show has 100k facebook views aside from broadcasting it in free TV.

What country will pay PBA for broadcasting rights when their is Pinoy TV or TFC for Filipinos abroad. Also there is Facebook.

Who said that you can't earn from facebook live streaming.

    • A 30-sec prime time ad spot is 1.4 million. In the pba, your team gets mentioned a hundred times in 2 hours, win or lose.

You will understand whats the matter with the pba if we understand the motivation of the teams

Ang Probinsyano and TV Patrol usually reach into 100k or more in YouTube+FB. This outside their other platforms (i.e. Kapamilya Channel, TV5 and A2Z).

Exactly, similar to prime time shows that racks multi million ads. Aside from ads it gets from streaming. Can adding Asian quota bring more money. If it will only get 1% increase in profit of what PBA gets locally, why spend money on expansion. Thats what make business sense in PBA.

Uhm, Pinoy TV or TFC don't air PBA games.

Aside from broadcasting rights, the PBA can be a marketing platform for Philippine products in other countries. At least, the exportable good (because one can't export Meralco or NLEX)

it would've been a different story if it were ABS CBN producing and covering the PBA games, actually ABS CBN tried to get the rights to the PBA a couple of years back but negotiations totally fell apart when the PBA asked for total control - the same arrangement they currently have with ABC 5.
I think PBA doesnt mind ABS CBN marketing them as long they get a the lion share of tv profit.. they should be the top guys together with gma doing that since they are the top networks n the country..

                  • to be honest, i think the PBA will surge in viewership both gate receipt and online for a short period of time due to the pandemic people will surely miss it. but i reckon it will be short lived as people nowadays specially the young people have so many things to be entertained about and PBA doesn't really innovate. even japan is looking at pinoy players to boost viewership. there are so many esports streaming online with hundreds of thousands of viewers on all platforms EACH stream. heck pba would be lucky if they get 100k viewers during playoff. maybe in championships they will have but regular season they'd be lucky. young people just doesnt watch tv that much anymore. im not young either but i cant remember when was the last time i watched TV lol.

oh and TV shows use "ratings" as their measure of viewership, 1 TVR = 1% of total TV households; in the Philippines if I'm not mistaken the number of TV households nationwide is around 15M so that 100K number you are quoting is but a drop in the bucket as it doesn't even represent 1 TVR - you're 50K household short ...

nonetheless no sane marketer will place ads on a show with 1 TVR LOL

for perspective AGB Nielsen and Kantar Media - the two media measurement companies that track TV ratings in the Philippines, have put the bar at 40 TVR as a high rating show. back in the 2000s I think it was Esperanza who hit 67 TVR which holds the record for highest ratings ever

the latest PBA TV ratings as of 2019 put it at around 4 TVR but this was during the finals of the Commissioner's Cup (TNT vs San Miguel); compare that to "Ang Probisyano's" 47 TVR during more or less the same period then you see that the PBA is but a minnow in terms of TV ratings
yeah thats the problem. afaik, TV5 is operating on losses with the PBA. even on online presence they are not doing good. they only get good audience during championships and to some extent playoffs. after this pandemic,if that happens, PBA will enjoy a shortlived resurgence but thats the thing, not sustainable. they don't even stream outside the PH. hope they invest on their own streaming platform but i doubt it will result to profit.

good to note tho that TV5 has been doing well since the past two years. this may bode well for PBA. but i do hope they let go of PBA once the TV5 contract ends, let them go to a UHF channel and take a loss and once PBA comes back with a favorable contract then TV5 can take the PBA again.

there's a reason why the pba is in ABC 5 and its not about the money LOL

oh and profit is a term thrown around very loosely these days when in fact most companies look at either Gross Margin or EBITDA as their main measure of financial health
Understandably, they want to put their men the men who bolted out on vintage to mba back then..also the guys who will pay them little because hey youre working at abs, you should be thankful card.

PBA teams can pivot back to Metro Manila for their practices once the NCR Plus Bubble reverts to a more lenient general community quarantine (GCQ) for the second half of June.

Commissioner Willie Marcial said Friday that the league will not need to seek a letter anymore from the Inter-Agency Task Force on the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) or from any governing body if restrictions relax after June 15.

"The Task Force has allowed us to practice again in Metro Manila if the government shifts the quarantine to GCQ," Marcial told ESPN5.com. "We won't have to wait for a letter from anyone anymore. I'll just send a letter to the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) to formalize things."

Well you can't run a proper season when you don't know where you are going to play lol. They have already scratched the idea of a bubble format, so Marcial has to adjust to that. Even with alfrancis trying to get the nudge and meeting with bong go, they had no recourse but to folllow.

Until they get proper clearance from the IATF on getting a go signal to host games in metro manila and conduct full practices in metro Manila, we will never get a clear picture on when the season will be.

I hope though when we do have a season, they do multiple games per day again(2 games on weekdays and 3 games on weekends) and more than 4 playing dates. A lot of people are still WFH can finally watch 4pm games on weekdays.

I think college ball is doing its best to resume, but with school still being digital and have to remember, college players are still technically not part of A4, unless there is special provisions given to them, so a lot of athletes will still not be vaccinated.
