Other teams also refused to take in Asian Imports as "Mas magaling naman ang pinoy dyan", refusing to think that adding asian import helps the league market itself internationally. I remember the Mongolian Import Ginebra signed a few years ago. Some mongolian basketball fans actually followed the PBA after that just to see him play.
The boss didnt like the idea, as it will strengthen up other teams as he cannot fill up their atacjed rkstwr already with asian imports
To becomes Asia's Best, we need to compete against the World's Best..

Syrian fans watching their guy competing in our league.. Even some PHL based Syrian nationals watching the games live to see their hometown hero.. Even Daghles from Jordan and Jamshidi of Iran.. Some Jordanian and Iranian fans lives in PHL watched their guy competing in the PBA.. Sinayang ng PBA that opportunity to be High quality league and put their brand internationally.. Masyadong dinibdib sa utak nila na "Mas magaling Pinoy dyan" rather than seeing our league being high quality Asian level league..
Yeah we got a lot of foreign students in the Ubelt studying Dentistry , nursing and other medical courses. I remember some of them waving their flags during basketball matches..

And it's not like we'll be taking their scrubs, for lack of a better term. The best players in SEA are are quality role players at worst. They can replace a local scrub in the rotation.

Ayun na nga, 'yung 'mas magaling Pinoy dyan' mindset. What have we done better than anyone else lately, in general?

The last Miss U comes to mind. Our horse didn't make it to the top 10 and everyone just disses Miss Mexico because "she doesn't deserve to win" and acted like we got cheated. They just can't accept that maybe the other contestants are better. And don't get me started about what our "passionate fans" wrote on miss Canada's socmed account.

          • What actual market will PBA attract having those Asian players here? We are the only nation aside from Lebanon that is big in Basketball and very active in social media. I mean if it will make money do you think those PBA owners will not cash in. We need to have a survey or market research first to determine if our Asian neighbors will take notice of one of their players playing in PBA.

Jawato, Jakrawan, P. Klahan, Dieker, Delvin Goh - these are the quality ASEAN players I know. Well, Oceania should be included in the consideration. Guys like Alipate, Fox, Ross and the Wesleys gives you a quality competition a good market as well.

              • As far as the basketball fan in me is concerned, the PBA is a dying league. I barely know the newer players anymore, unless they played for gilas or were among the best collegiate players.

that's why i support any move that will resuscitate my interest in it. Acquiring asian imports is not a new concept, and I'm sure they have already conducted some studies on its impact. I'm curious though why they abandoned the idea so suddenly when it seemed really good at that time. was it because the two finalists (smc and alaska) in that conference didn't have any asian imports in their ranks? did they come to a conclusion that asian imports are a liability?

most teams did not want it because it has height restriction.

d coaches were right. what's d point if there is ht rescriction (dinaya nga ht nung isa diba diba).

if there was no ht resrtriction, we could have seen tnt with an iranian or jordanian center, etc.

I think Ginebra is still big and the other two SMC teams are fine but the popularity of the other teams right now is much weaker than the PBA's heyday.

Even Ginebra and Meralco (Although Meralco hired Jamshidi as Asian import as start of the conference) in the next season.. Baka dun nila naisip that Asian imports will not work for them.. But they didn't see the effects on having Asian imports marketing and international popularity wise.. Masyadong dinibdib ng PBA board na Pinoys are better "Kuno"!!!
What marketing and popularity wise will bring to PBA? Do you think putting a Japanese, Korean or other asian player will attract critical mass audience in their country.

Example is yung former import ng Phoenix and Ginebra (I don't know their names), Some Koreans living here watching their "kababayans" to play here.. May column na spin.ph nian before that some Koreans watching the PBA games of their "kababayans".. Also when Jamshidi plays here, Iranian fans watching the games of their guy.. In fact even in their home town of these players eh headline sa kanila yung paglalaro sa PBA ng mga players nila.. Take example si Madanly ng Syria.. Di yan target yung mass audience because most of them no idea what are the purpose of having these Asian imports.. The real target here is the Audience from the said countries and their audience back home.. Especially now we are in Social media age.. Mas lalakas hatak ng Asian imports due to Live streaming...
I didn't say no one feom that Asian players country men will watch PBA, what I say will it reach critical mass. Like any business you need to reach critical mass to make business sense. Unlike us we can support Kai because we can reach in 100k + critical mass for NBL and B.League. PBA can try but if it doesn't reach such numbers it will be useless. We are different that our Asian neighbors in terms of basketball followings.

Agree with this point, but i think b league already covered this market reasearch. Just limit the asian imports to the same countries (japan, china, korea, taiwan, indonesia).

Yup 6'3 was the height limit, the average height were we have plenty of good local players

Sayang roster spot dyan but because he's close friend/relative of some executive/coaching staff of Magnolia eh lagi sya nandyan.. Even look at Caguioa eh "has been" na yan at sayang roster spot sa kanya eh Ginebra still giving him a contract even it will waste of resources long term..
I subscribe to this theory about why pba discontinued getting asian imports (instead of the "Mas magaling Pinoy dyan" mindset). I think teams use their end of bench roster spots as currency to pay off/get favors from agents, executives, officials.
