I think the commissioners of the past wanted the league to be entertaining. Thus they prefer more the versatile forwards/guards compared to the centers.

So our best locals ie June Mar, wont be dominated on. Its no surprise the height limit is 6'10 which is June Mars height. Increasing it to 6'11 might be ok. But not sure about removing it entirely.

Korea until recently had a 6'6 height limit. Before that it was probably around 6'8. Because the imports we got who played for them were only 6'8.

I am not sure how their league is doing, now when they supposedly removed the height limits.

But for preparation for the world cup I would remove the limit this year. And yes let Blatche play but for the worsr team, BW.

So, the PBA is not the only league in the world who have height limits. Still, it puzzles me why we can't have a conference that will feature imports with unlimited height. It should be fun and will definitely familiarize our players to a different kind of basketball.

The national team asks for the players, they give it to them. They ask for the schedule to be adjusted, they did.

Having Blatche in the PBA is critical. The Board should have approved of his participation by waiving the 6'10 rule. They didn't say it directly but it's obvious they're worried that having Blatche around would tilt the balance in favor of the team he'll be playing for - which should be NLEX.

Waiving the cap shouldn't be too much of a concern for the SMC and MVP teams. It's the 6 other teams that will encounter problems, well, perhaps, except for Phoenix and maybe Alaska. But GlobalPort, Columbian, Blackwater and Rain or Shine may find this too stiff a price. Let the cap remain as it is, and in Blatche's case, this can easily be circumvented (not that I'm encouraging that this be done).

It's simple. You bring Blatche on board as early as the start of the Commissioner's Cup to play for Gilas, you already pay for his services. Let's assume he gets paid $50k a month, and the import cap is at $30k. Whether he plays in the PBA or not, the SBP will still pay him $50k. But if he plays in the PBA, his salary would now be shared by NLEX and the SBP - with NLEX paying him the max, and the SBP paying him the balance to total $50k (or whatever amount he actually receives). It still works within the rules since the SBP will still shoulder his salary whether he's part of the league or not.

The only reason why they didn't give the greenlight for Blatche is that they worry about his potential dominance. But this will give a chance for the SMC Group to bring in also the best possible big imports to face Blatche. You have a much more competitive and quality league, Blatche will have quality competition to deal with, Blatche gets to stay in shape and gets used to Yeng' system, and Gilas practices will start early.

Which is why I'm hoping NLEX conducts its own measurement on Blatche as to his real height without shoes while lying down (the same approach the PBA does) and see if he makes the 6'10 limit. Blatche declared himself 7'1 in the NBA but this is probably while wearing shoes on (which is really the correct way of measuring height since players don't play without shoes). So there's a slight chance for Blatche to actually measure a quarter of an inch shorter than the 6'10 rule. If he doesn't, then so be it. But if he does make the limit, then nothing can stop him from suiting up for NLEX.

There are a lot of players from NCAA, even down to Division II that would make good imports. Since the NBA emphasized three-point shooting and fielded small ball lineups, lots of 6'10 plus guys were displaced. Also, when Commissioner's Cup opens, CBA season will be over (please correct me if I'm wrong).

Who knows, if we lift the height limit we might even find the naturalized player of the future? Because of the height limit, we actually limited our options to players undersized in the international game (Justin Brownlee, Eugene Phelps). The past windows have shown that we STILL do not have a reliable big man and need someone like Andray Blatche to carry us. Even JMF is only good for limited minutes. Dray is not getting any younger and we should be preparing.

Even if you look at our pipeline, we have a lot of competent 6'7 players that would be great in the pro leagues, but who is our bet internationally? Just Kai Sotto and AJ Edu. Aside from them, we still do not have competent options at 6'10" above who has the caliber to develop and play internationally. Hence, we still need to naturalize a big man.

It makes me wonder with the basketball growth in Asia, especially in ASEAN, maybe PBA should take look at the opportunities of expanding beyond the Philippines. PBA's growth might be relying to much on our national economy. Of course, we cannot afford blue chip imports because the league's economics is only reaching a certain level. ABL/MPBL is a very good prototype and I hope PBA should consider studying the model.

PBA's growth might be relying to much on our national economy. Of course, we cannot afford blue chip imports because the league's economics is only reaching a certain level. ABL/MPBL is a very good prototype and I hope PBA should consider studying the model.

PBA should study the feasibility of expanding and putting PBA teams in Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan. They host the most number of Pinoy Expatriates in the region and while HK and TPE are technically not in the SEA Region, they are easily accesible. HK and SG are world class cities that are 3-4 hours away from MNL, while the southern port city of Kaoshiung in is a mere 2 hours away. Surely, SBP/PBA can arrange to let 2-3 local boys from these cities/ countries play for the expansion PBA teams.
