  • The sick PBA gets a chance to heal but instead takes more of that stuff that makes it ill in the first place.

For casual fans, it doesn't matter who owns these teams. It's only hardcore purists who worry about these things. And they're part of a small minority. Those casual fans who go the venue, cheer their lungs out, fight with fans of the opponents, etc. are what matters to the PBA.
These are all fair points which I agree with, but this is being done at the expense of alienating fans of the other teams (which is also a sizeable base) and putting new viewers off (due to the lack of parity and tournament predictability). Worst, it comes at the expense of the national team as the best players are "iced" out of the pool.
Reliance on tried and tested formulas also betrays Narvasa's limitations as commissioner.

I don't disagree with you. These are all correct.

But put yourself in Narvasa's shoes and do the math. When you have the bean counter in front of you, you assess which is best for the league. Either way, you'll be alienating fans anyhow so which fanbase will you put your chips on? In the end, whoever has the bigger fanbase will win. But more importantly, whoever has the deeper pocket will prevail. Sad truth.

        • Perhaps, mvp can give standhardinger a gilas contract now that takes effect the moment his abl contract expires and signed before the pba draft? So whoever drafts cs will have to contend with an existing contract and this will make them think twice about drafting cs? Another factor is that cs will only he available after the abl season.

The thing is whatever the MVP group is going to do publicly will further create tension between 2 groups, that is why I guess Alaska has been most vocal. And the fact, that they also did the same trade for 1st pick before. MVP group I think is the alarmed "board members who requested anonymity" in the articles.

            • For the NT's sake critical is we have CS for Nov ( no choce) whcih i think is still going to happen , still in the ABL, but after Nov it looks dim to get CS, have to fast track Austin then

Which means SMB will draft Ravena, which will be worse since we can use Standhardinger as a backup naturalized once Blatche is available or naturalize Austin or someone else, but Ravena projects to be a regular Gilas player for the next decade or so and him playing for SMB will jeopardize all that.

                • Then have cs and ravena withdraw, the abl waits for them. Then jeron teng can become the next alex araneta, apet jao, and paolo mendoza.

                  • Here's another way of looking at it:

There's a risk involved in the early announcement of such a trade deal, assuming it will be consummated. Under normal circumstances, trading a pick normally happens during draft day, when one cannot pre-empt the action of another. But with this development, a couple of factors are involved:

                    1. This announcement has created a lot of buzz on social media and various basketball forums. Much of the decision of the Commissioner will obviously be affected by the fans' response. What could be an acceptable trade deal may change overnight if the fans' reactions would be negative.

                    2. The bigger consequence: a trade deal is consummated between SMB and KIA - and SMB gives up on guys like Rosser, Tubid, McCarthy and YDO for that first pick. If this is approved on Thursday (after the Board meeting), what if CS and Kiefer decide to pull out of the draft pool on Friday? That means SMB will end up with the shorter end of the stick - giving up on 4 reserves for a Jeron Teng.

                      • Interestingly enough if only CS didn't apply for the draft there won't be so much furor on SMB getting the 1st pick.

If CS backs out of the draft, will the PBA punish him?

Imagine SMB getting the 1st pick then they suddenly end up with Ravena or Teng for the pick.

Nah. PBA won't punish CS. And you want kiefer donning the smb jersey? Whether we like it or not, CS should not pull out the draft.. it'll make it worst. It'll much worst if kiefer will pull out..

                          • I don't know if you already knows it but I found out SMC of ramon ang and kia motor philippines is sort of sister team after all haha. To sum it up.

                            - Asian Carmakers (importer and service provider of BMW in the country) and Columbian Autocar Corporation (assembler and distributor of Kia vehicles in the Philippines) is both under alvarez group of company owned by palawan governor jose alvarez.

                            - SMC buys 65% stake at the asian carmakers (which is now SMC Asia Car Distributors Corporation) and is now with partnership with alvarez who is also the chairman of columbian autocar corporation.

No wonder this lopsided trade would really happen, after all best buddies helps each other lol. It's hard to say no to your boss.

Was there any precedence that a trade was nixed by the Commissioner? With the revised trade, even though, its already palatable and better than the original deal, Commish should cancel so this as to dispel the perception that PBA is an SMC league. What does it make of PBA , an SMC puppet?

The more that the trade should be cancelled. There should be no direct trade between sister teams and a company can only own 3 teams in the PBA. SMC now has 4 teams ,add Global Ports inwhich SMC is a part owner and thats 5 teams already
