PAL is no longer the sole Flag Carrier as Cebu Pacific Air, Zest Airways and Air Philippines were also given said distinction With Cebu Pacific now currently considered the country's largest national flag carrier surpassing PAL.

Meanwhile, PBA commissioner Chito Salud and Coca-Cola Bottlers Inc. chair-CEO William Schultz met yesterday at the PBA office and discussed the rumored sale of the beverage company’s franchise to San Miguel Corp.

Salud said he would first notify the PBA board of governors of what happened during the meeting before revealing details to the media.

And... Reports are saying that Schultz has indeed denied the rumors and no sale has consummated. We'll see if the commissioner waits for the 20th (the said board meeting) before he acts on the proposed trade, which has hit a snag obviously.

I wonder if it's possible that PAL care off Lucio Tan buys the coke PBA franchise. Legally, it will be an independent team since it was Lucio Tan who bought the team and SMB only owns 46%.

In this scenario, can PAL trade its players to SMB teams without a third team?

in my understanding, sale can be done before putting it into board approval. of course its not final as it is not offical yet without the board approval. sale will only be consummated with the approval. so there is nothing illegal if there was already agreement between coke and smc prior to presenting it to the board. in my understanding, its not just the "intention to sale" that is to be approved. but the sale itself. if its just the "intention', then even with approval, any one of the 2 parties can run away from that "intention" as it is not binding. but im no lawyer or businessman so mine is the understanding of a student.

I thank the Coca-Cola Bottlers Phils Inc. for responding to our request to clarify media reports on the purported sale of its PBA franchise.

Through a letter addressed to the PBA Board of Governors dated February 13, 2012, Mr. William Schultz, President and Chief Executive Officer of CCBPI, categorically stated that:

1. its franchise has not been sold and that the ownership, operation and management of the Powerade team remain intact under CCBPI control;

2. it will follow the proper process should it decide to consummate the sale of its franchise, namely by first notifying and requesting approval for a sale from the PBA Board of Governors;

3. it has recently met with San Miguel Corporation conformably to a right of first refusal to buy the basketball team granted to SMC at the time CCBPI was acquired from SMC in 2007; and

4. while SMC confirmed its interest in maintaining and securing the right of first refusal to buy Powerade, nothing has been finalized and no sale has been concluded.

While this clarification may help put to rest certain speculations surrounding this issue, it also lays bare a need for additional rules to govern the matter of franchise sale that would in the future prevent the kind of speculation and concerns that have been expressed the past weeks. I will bring this up to the Board for discussion to come up with a collective decision on the matter.

In the meantime, in order to give our Board of Governors the opportunity to ask further clarificatory questions regarding the CCBPI response, I deem it prudent to defer acting on the proposed trade between Petron and Powerade until after the scheduled Special Board Meeting on Monday, February 20.

On a related matter, we have been formally notified that Ronald L. Asuncion has been appointed alternate governor of CCBPI to the Board of Governors of the PBA and will be representing CCBPI in the Special Board Meeting on February 20. Mr. JB Baylon remains the designated governor.

i read somewhere round here that chris tiu being reunited with toroman is possible at least indirectly as toro acts as a consultant for smb. so if the new NT coach wants a change in direction, can pba teams sign tiu directly this season?

pba by laws doesn't allow it. he can play first in the D-League and then enter the Draft.

i want CT to be part of the Gilas2 though.im in favor of it.as one of the assistant coaches. mainly a defensive coach focusing on wing defense. i think he's good at it with his hat full of tricks.

No. There are rules to follow.

like all Gilas players .... Kap is exempted from the D-League Residency rule and he could just enter his name in the Draft if he wants to. But he could not directly sign-up with a PBA Team without passing-thru the draft.

It has happened in the past - the infamous trade of Japeth from Burger King to TnT for picks, with MVP being part-owner of Burger King. Interestingly, Lucio Tan was also part-owner of Burger King at that time.

I remember that was also questioned and deliberated-on at that time however the bad publicity the PBA was being subjected into because of that controversy, they just allowed that to happen since Japeth does not to play for Burger King annd would rather play for SMART GILAS which was not a PBA team.

i remember in 1988 patrimonio jolas and co. did not join the draft and went directly to purefooods. jack tanuan was the top draft pick while jolas won the roy. i forgot why the special case though.

As part of the deal to join the league, Purefoods was allowed to take some amateur players from the PABL and the national team. Purefoods then drafted Alvin Patrimonio, Jojo Lastimosa, Jerry Codiñera, Glenn Capacio, and Jack Tanuan. They also added Al Solis and Totoy Marquez from Shell.

However, there was a surrounding controversy on the case of Patrimonio, as his PABL team Swift denied Patrimonio's release. However, before the All-Filipino Conference, the issue was settled and Patrimonio joined the team.

Purefoods also took Fernandez, Hubalde, Israel, and Onchie dela Cruz from the Tanduay squad. David Thirdkill was hired as Purefoods' import for the Open Conference and Fernandez was the team's playing coach during this time.
