Bottom line is you always think ahead....mr dave 6-5 na magaling na bata ito....if i were kia ill keep troy and hire danny ildefonso to be his mentor.
obviously kia lacks "real" PBA players right now...so trading away a potential future star for 3 solid PBA contributors right now is a good deal. i really don't see troy as sure a thing as junemar or even danny I coming out of the amateurs..not with him only starting 1 year in college and not even being the 2nd best player on that team.

    • Troy has a lot of upside, but depending on the management's view, I think Mahindra made a good decision trading Troy.
If they are pushing for win now mentality -- JUST SO THAT THEY CAN CHANGE THE MINDSET INTO A WINNING MENTALITY, this is a good move to a right direction.

Having a winning psyche, makes for a big part in a winning culture. If Mahindra intends to get into the playoffs in at least 2 of three conferences, then that will change the perspective, mentality, mood, psyche of its players. Also, I think, Mahindra is doing a different kind of player analytics, given the kind of players they get.

This is exciting times for Mahindra indeed.

I am also of the same opinion that Kia did what was best for them. Troy's future is 2-3 years from now while Kia's requirements is to have legit bigs, scoring, defense and a deep bench.

They achieved all their objectives by trading Troy away for Ramos, Canaleta and Rob Reyes.

Rob - Gives them defense, rebounding and a legit center.

Ramos - Gives them a stretch 4 who can also play the wing position and help them with scoring.

Canaleta - although old will actually thrive in Kia's system. He will be their primary scorer at the wings and will team up with Karl Dehesa to knock down outside shots.

Remember also that Kia is entitled to 7 footers the majority of the PBA season. Bring back PJ Ramos in the middle and have a couple of stretch 4s like Aldrech and KG will spell some trouble for the other teams. Just these two players alone vs Troy who still has to prove himself in the league along with his promised outside shooting, is already a coup for Kia . . . .I would have done the same thing if I was Kia's GM.

        • when will the UFA start in the PBA and how long is the max rookie contract? Maybe thats part of the decision to trade Troy?

Maybe there is fear that they'll develop him for 2-3 yrs then he'll just sign elsewhere and mahindra gets nothing

I agree, Great analysis. Kia badly needs players like the Rob, Adrech and KG. they will complement 7 footer imports. A better move compare to Barako bullpups trade acquisition.

                  This was back in 2011.

HONG KONG—Gone are the days when teams in the professional Philippine Basketball Association league owned right-of-first-refusal over their players, virtually making them career-long commodities

HONG KONG—Gone are the days when teams in the professional Philippine Basketball Association league owned right-of-first-refusal over their players, virtually making them career-long commodities with practically no right to negotiate with other squads interested in their services.

Starting this season, the Philippine Basketball Association will be “player-friendly.”

In a landmark decision reached here on Monday by the league’s board of governors, the PBA will now allow players, after six years in the league regardless of what team, to chart their future.

This new rule will apply to the players who will start their PBA careers this year, such as JVee Casio and Paul Lee, who went 1-2 in the Draft last Sunday.

                  xxx

There have been a number of cases in the past— the Benjie Paras issue being one of the biggest—when players failed to get out of their ballclubs even after expressing their desire to leave.

Paras, who in 1989 became the league’s only rookie to be named MVP before making it as one of the league’s 25 greatest players, started and ended his career with Shell although at one point in the 1990s he wanted to leave the squad to play under Robert Jaworski for Ginebra San Miguel.

The right-of-first refusal rule allowed teams to match offers coming from other ballclubs and keep their stars automatically.

                  -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We'll find out soon enough, 2 more years to go. Probably the reason why RoS didn't give Paul Lee a 3-year extension, because had they done so, they stand to lose him for nothing once that contract is up in 2017. When the time comes, I hope he doesn't end up in SMC. Lassiter was also part of this draft, but I doubt he leaves SMC.

Tnt went out of their way to get hold of rosario. Even contemplated of letting rdo go. Now that tells you something about troys potential. They saw him upclose and were convinced. Its weird, i dont see the logic of Kia trading away a young player with vast talent. If victolero had his way, hed rather keep rosario and build the team around him. Pero iba gusto ni kuts eh. Well, lets assume they want to win right away..didnt they beat the top teams with their old lineup? I mean getting the 3 isnt an upgrade at all. Sad to see them give away a young talent. Si kuts lang nakakaalam niyan.

You beat me to it. You just sounded more vulgar. Still SMC wins hands dowm when it comes down lopsided trades this year or every year perhaps.

MVP is the lesser evil. And is not arrogant like RSAng Competitive but not Talangka. And someone who the chinese will not dare contact and talk to. hehehe.

The RDO trade proposal involved TNT getting both this year's KIA pick as well as next year's. Personally, I would've done that trade in a heartbeat if KIA was assured of at least a top 2 pick next year. Also, the injury to Kelly didn't help. You are severely underselling the 3 players KIA got if you don't think they got an upgrade. They won some games last season, but mostly in the import-laced conferences, yet they still didn't make the playoffs. I think they have enough to make it now, specially if they manage to botch the first conference and get an unlimited height import for the next 2 conferences.

Maybe because it isn't as lopsided as you think it is. Sure, TNT wins the trade, but what KIA got was definitely defensible - 3 solid players, I reckon all 3 might even start for KIA. Thing is, even in the NBA, trades have winners and losers, but at least the moves they make have some logic behind them (except maybe Sacramento's). Now compare that to what SMC is doing to Barako, and you'll see the disparity. A practice player and 2 end of the bench guys? Parang deja vu lang ah (who can forget the Maliksi trade, among other trades). This recent trade just tells us that Josh Urbiztondo is some sort of superstar. Imagine, he got traded by Cone to Barako, for what turned out to be the 2nd pick which was used on Ian Sanggalang, and now he gets traded (again!) by Cone (again!) to Barako (again!), for what would definitely be a top 3 pick in a loaded draft that could just end up being Standhardinger, Parks or Ravena. It's clear as day that Barako is being financed by SMC, if the league doesn't have the power to eject Barako outright, might as well consider them under the SMC umbrella so we don't see these farm team trades.

                            • basically kia traded a no.2 pick with vast potential to 2 starters from an average pba team (ramos often starts as pf for nlex when there's no import) and a 3rd string center from an elite team (reyes used to start for petron some years ago). and all 3 are probably more talented than at least 70% of kia's roster last year. whats not to like?

seems like no one is crying foul except smc fans.

                              • a 6-5 future legit superstar vs a 30 plus year old one dimensional journeyman, a bench warmer and a converted wing who ave 6.1 ppg. To be fair, pwede pa si ramos kaso the other 2 ? Cmon, hard to believe they asked for almazan and RDO but settled for this package.
