this is the mother of all TRADES....

TOROMAN(MVP) will be traded to SMC for Jong Uichico .
so who's telling MVP will never deal a trade to SMC?
I think people may have overlooked the fact that Toroman could be assigned to the San Miguel team in the ABL in preparation for a new NCC-like national pool. If this happens, then we will have TWO national pools! MVP's and Cojuangco's! And that can only be bad news for Philippine basketball because the talents will be divided instead of being consolidated.

      Vargas questions Lassiter trade

MANILA, Philippines—The player transfer form request that would send sensational Powerade rookie Marcio Lassiter to Petron Blaze was finally received by the PBA Tuesday, prompting one prominent board member to comment that “it doesn’t make sense.”

Ricky Vargas, the PLDT franchise’s representative to the board, yesterday called on the Coca-Cola management to declare its intentions since “it doesn’t make sense for Coke to be trading away its good players if they are staying (in the PBA).”

At past lunch yesterday, a transfer form signed by Powerade’s JB Baylon and Hector Calma of Petron formally asked for the league’s approval of the trade that would send Lassiter to the Boosters in exchange for Nonoy Baclao and Rey Guevarra, a deal that has been brewing since last week.

“Transparency is the issue here,” Vargas told the Inquirer over the phone. “Coke should go up front and tell everyone what is really happening. It’s all over the news, even their players are saying (that the team is leaving the PBA).”

Board chair Mamerto Mondragon of Rain or Shine had in fact called for an emergency board meeting on Friday to find out about the state of the Powerade/Coca-Cola franchise and identify the true buyer.

“We (board) should know who is buying,” Vargas said. “They (Powerade) should declare that ‘We sold it already,’ and if so, who is the buyer. If there is an influence of another owner who already owns teams, that should be scrutinized clearly for the betterment of the league.”

Powerade needs at least a two-thirds vote from the board to be able to consummate its reported sale to the San Miguel group.

San Miguel already owns B-Meg, Petron and Barangay Ginebra.

Vargas wants commissioner Chito Salud to step in and apply the PBA constitution and by-laws in order to maintain balance in the league.

“If they are (resigning),” Vargas said, “there is a provision in the (PBA) constitution that states all signed (players’) contracts (in the disbanding team) should be turned over to the commissioner for the players to be dispersed and maintain the balance in the league.”

The Inquirer broke the story last Monday that Coca-Cola CEO Bill Schultz had already sold its PBA franchise to San Miguel Corp. to the tune of P100 million, and that the Lassiter trade is part of the deal.

Salud, who returns to work tomorrow after a family vacation abroad, said through the league’s media arm that he will “consider and evaluate that trade at the appropriate time.”

      • Powerade wants to trade Lassiter to Petron

WITH THE ISSUE of ownership surrounding the PBA Philippine Cup runners-up Powerade, the Tigers are planning to trade one of their prized rookies in Marcio Lassiter to Petron for Noy Baclao and Rey Guevarra.

Picked fourth overall in this season’s rookie draft, Lassiter has earned his keep in the big league as one of Powerade’s best players. He solidified his reputation by ranking third in the statistical points race in the Philippine Cup behind Petron’s Arwind Santos and Powerade teammate Gary David.

Baclao and Gueverra, on the other hand, have not seen their potential come to fruition for the Blaze Boosters after they were acquired from Air21 last year.

The duo have seen limited playing time in the Philippine Cup, with Baclao playing an average of just 11.3 minutes over 21 games and Guevarra appearing in just 10 of the Boosters’ 23 games.

        FOR APPROVAL

The deal still requires the approval of the PBA. League commissioner Chito Salud has the right to revise or veto deals that he deems imbalanced.

Coke’s PBA franchise used to be part of SMC, before the corporate giant sold its stake in CCBPI in 2006. Under terms of that transaction, SMC retained right of first refusal to buy the PBA team if Coke decided to sell it.

Despite the denial of Coke, officials of other PBA teams expressed alarm over the development. Many PBA franchises on the way to being sold or disbanded have seen their marquee players transferred prior to their sale or disbandment.

In 2009, Sta. Lucia traded star players Kelly Williams and Ryan Reyes to Talk ‘N Text a few months before the franchise was sold to Meralco.

In 2006, top Coke players Rudy Hatfield, Rafi Reavis, and Billy Mamaril were traded to Barangay Ginebra before SMC let go of the franchise.

In 2005, top players from Shell including Tony dela Cruz and Rich Alvarez (Alaska), Billy Mamaril (Coca-Cola), Roger Yap (Purefoods), and Ronald Tubid (Air 21) were traded to different squads before the team left the PBA.

In 2001, Tanduay traded stars Eric Menk to Ginebra and Dondon Hontiveros to San Miguel before selling the franchise to the FedEx Express.

see, dispersal draft is the proper way to go much like what happened to the shell franchise. So if this deal goes thru, salud should just step down as comish coz he is a joke.

Exactly. It takes two to tango.

For Friday's meeting i expect the sale and trades to be disapproved. i would not hate that too.

if what i read is true , it might be a part of a deal upon buying the POWERADE.
to back it up , who the hell in the world would want to trade its markee rookie that scores ,depends and set plays and averages around 15+ points and scored 30+ point in some occasions to a bench players(baclao, guevarra) merely averaging 3points combine.

Who the hell in the world would want to do that trade? A team that wants cash. And cash. And cash. That's unacceptable in basketball sense but business wise? You always jump on that deal.

why? was powerade franchise sold already? i mean officially? the sale is up for approval of the board but my understanding is there is no sale yet so there is nothing to approve or disapprove but mainly for the board to discuss and clarify issues like coke's alleged sale/impending sale of the franchise and its alleged/impending sale to smc.

on the trade, it may be discussed but i believe only the comissioner has the power to approve or disapprove a trade. its not the business of the board to approve or disapprove trades.

Yes i understand that it's two different matters: (a)trade and (b) sale If indeed Coke was sold, then the board has every right to be paranoid about the (a) trade However, if it's all just rumors and there's no (b) sale, then how do you justify Powerade's initiation and approval of (a)trade?

One affects the other matter in this case. Friday's board meeting about the sale should probably clear a lot of things. We'll see.

yes, its primarily to clarify issues. baylon should be ready. mondragon aided by uytengsu and the smart people would probably force him to spill the beans.

on the trade, salud can rule on it as early as thursday or friday even before the board meeting.

the trade, while possibly a product of an agreement on the franchise sale or impending sale, is a different matter altogether and while unethical if indeed gossips are true, it does not make the trade illegal (if there is no sale yet) as these are two teams working and deciding a trade.

salud, however, can and must approve or disapprove it on the basis of the fairness of the trade in terms of the value it would bring to the two teams involved. and he can do it regardless if the gossips surrounding the sale/impending sale is true or not.

yeah well, betting wouldn't change a thing...simply, i don't like how the pba has turned out under his watch. lopsided deals left and right...and i certainly don't blame the teams. Of course smc wants to improve their team (albeit hoarding talent and being greedy at times) while powerade wants to "address their frontcourt issues" with baclao...still it's the comish's duty to look after the league, not destroy it.
