Lew Brown (+), former Great Taste Import
For old geezers like us. I came across this IBN thread in General Global Discussions/Other Basketball Forums/RIP Dead basketball players thread.
Even if there was no discussion about his PBA stint here in the late seventies/early eighties, by his height, age, and looks, I believe this is the same Lew Brown who played for Presto and Great Taste. As posted by worldbasketball, he died last week.
The left-handed Mr. Brown was a very colorful import noted for his tantrums amd temper. In an opening day game with Galerie Dominique, Lew engaged Buster Matheney in a fistfight during the game. Inside information revealed that the fracas was only a rematch between the two imports since they earlier tussled with one another in the old Continental Basketball Association (CBA).
I hope Toyota fans remember this- another famous incident was in 1980, thinking the game was already won and with scant seconds remaining, Lew inbounded the ball intentionally to the Big J, with whom he was having physical and verbal issues all game long, as a means of taunting him, at the other half of the court.
Big J promptly got the ball and heaved the ball from almost mid-court, towards the Toyota's basket and promptly sank the winning 3 pointer as time expired. Talk about an assist!
