It would have improved their shooting skills on how to score over 7 footers or 6'11s.

Al Chua saying it would lessen the development time of the Filipinos, well we still have the All-Filipino Conference for that

He can play as world import if he is really desperate to earn bucks soonest but it will place him in unique situation. And it may jeopardise his FIBA eligibility to play as local for Gilas.

Afaik all 9 Filipinos who are currently playing in B.league had played at least one game for Philippine national team. James Spencer for instance was tapped in U-19 NT…

If he wants to take the world import route, then he has to maintain that high import standards or he will be relegated to the lower ranked teams or B2, and accept low pay.

QMB might not survive FIBA's personal interview questions, like "you say you have a Philippine passport as a child, so how many times did you go to the Philippines to visit relatives or play basketball games there, also why did you not play in the U-20 U-18 Phil teams when you said you were a Filipino citizen." It will be an epic fail.

Those questions are easy to answer and based on his interviews, QMB has a good head on his shoulders so he won't have any problem responding unless he is lying.

Was QMB ever been to the Philippines in his youth?

"Becoz the RP youth team head coach, who was so obsessed with small line up, never bothered to invite me for either the U-16/17 & U-18/19 youth teams. It didn't help that I'm a tall player."

              Just kidding

Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

Yeah, QMB is no KG Canaleta when it comes to interview.

                • It doesn't matter if he never went to the Philippines if he really has that green passport. And I agree with Jamskie: "I never played with the youth team because the required center for those teams should stand 6'4" in height. The coach doesn't want to look up when he is talking to his players." hahaha

                  • There are so many filfors who visit the Philippines for the first time as adults. They love the country and would have loved to visit sooner...but, as a child, you're at the mercy of your parents/family. You can't just fly to a far away country on your own.

I would go out on a limb and say that QMB failing any hypothetical interview is a remote possibility. The guy might be the smartest in all of uaap.

                    • QMB has an Engineering degree. Yup, he just might be at the top when it comes to brain power among the UAAP players.

for all the raucous some of us are making on his nationality status I believe QMB don’t pay much attention to it. Anyways he had graduated Mechanical Engineering degree with Academic honors in Vanderbilt University, completed post-graduate degree in Citadel, a military school and on the verge of getting another masters degree in UP. He has lot of options. There would be a lot of automobile companies in Japan who would like to offer him 6 or 7 figures monthly salary (in Philippine pesos) if he decide not to pursue basketball career. And yes, he can definitely play there as world import status instead of Asian import quota status. And if PBA stick to its policy on monthly salary of rookies of 150k monthly. No brainer QMB will not bite on that.

For him basically no incentive for him to play for PBA unless the PBA team that may draft him will circumvent the rules on rookies’ salary. But again hello tax office…

Not really tax cheating if they offer businesses which SMC does.

I am not sure QMB can make it as world import in Div 1 B league. I think you underestimate those guys. Without validation of his Gilas eligibility, QMB’s options are limited. He can take a 1 year contract in the PBA and await the SMC and TNT offers the ff year. Not bad I think. He needs to be careful though. Guys like Datu and Villegas have been injured. Still a rim protector and post defender is rare in the PBA. Meralco wouldnt have won against SMB without Bates. QMB will be a difference maker for any team except probably SMB.

don’t underestimate what’s on QMB’s mind, he is a clever boy. A decision to forego basketball career I believe is one of his option. He will finish his second masters degree in UP and he will be the master of his destiny. And yes QMB has better US NCAA basketball credentials than some of the World Imports in B.league…

                              • In QMB's case the obvious play here is to get his eligibility/FIBA clearance and then secure a contract in either the B league or in the KBL. For a player of his caliber the PBA should be one of his last options if he does intend to pursue a career in professional basketball.
