  • Problem is that theres no "relatability" between the fans and the teams that the former can latch onto.

In contrast, because teams in the college ranks and the MPBL are playing for a school or location, people will naturally flock to the court to cheer on their hometown heroes / schoolmates

Why PVL has tons of crowd and full pack stadium even in elimination games in manila games than in PBA? PVL has parity given without a draft..
aside from their core fans, casuals especially men tune in because of cheeks

Yeah, why don't UAAP or NCAA fans watch the PBA in Metro Manila to watch the career of their college stars?

It all goes back to farm teams. The famous college stars are typically drafted high by the farm teams, like Lucero. Why would the fans be motivated to watch their stars when they play for teams that dont aim to win. Teams like TF are fun to watch now because with Converge in the worst spot for the top pick they have leeway to win games. With the level of the rookies and their other players they can actually beat good teams if they wanted to. It would have been a more entertaining league. But well they allow farm teams. IMO better fewer teams but actually aim to win.

That's why lately, I've been leaning more to a PBA with no draft. The NBA-model of having a semblance of parity and shifting of powers, with some wildcards or properly re-built franchises playing for the finals and actually taking home the title on some occasions, is really no longer applicable to the PBA, unlike over 20 years ago, where a team like PF, Red Bull, or Sta. Lucia would tank so hard to get the marquee college/overseas-based young players but actually making something out of their respective rebuilds.

I say, PBA should just ditch the draft, allow open entry of local players as young as 18 or 19, let the strong teams get stronger year after year (it's a league ran by mega-corporate entities anyway at saling pusa lang ang iba), but as caveat to that, the PBA and all of its governors should mandate the season champions to seriously take the EASL, or any other major regional club tournament there is for their clubs to join, and make a significant impact there that would raise the banner of Philippine basketball. It might sound delusional but I believe that'll win back some of the lost respect from the non-casual PBA-SMC basketball fans.

pba’s gen ad section should be free, there is no value added experience watching the game live anyway, especially for the farm teams.

aside from free tickets, mpbl teams already has a built in fan base in their respective lgus, too bad pba governors are too full of themselves to realize the income potentials of the pba. If only they treat the league as their only source of income and not as a gentleman’s club/tax break
