Rain or Shine agrees to trade Buenafe to Meralco for first round pick

Rain or Shine is set to trade shooting guard Ronjay Buenafe to Meralco in exchange for the Bolts’ 2014 first round pick, multiple sources told InterAKTV.
The deal is expected to be finalized and submitted to the PBA for approval shortly. Prior to the deal, Buenafe signed a three-year contract.
The two teams earlier had a tentative deal to swap picks in this year’s draft. Rain or Shine were in talks to trade its No. 7 pick to Meralco for the 2014 pick.
But the Elasto Painters found an opportunity to draft Chris Tiu with the pick, and decided to keep it for themselves.
Buenafe is coming off a season that saw him post career-lows in minutes played and scoring, likely due to Rain or Shine’s depth. But he was still a key cog in the Elasto Painters’ title run in the Governors’ Cup.
The Bolts have been active on the trading front this offseason, with reports that they have tried to deal for Alaska star guard LA Tenorio. With that trade falling apart, they focused their eyes on Buenafe, who gives them another shooter and slasher to complement Mac Cardona and Sol Mercado.
For the Elasto Painters, the deal gives them flexibility to give more playing time for Tiu, who is expected to play both guard positions for Rain or Shine. Last year, after drafting Paul Lee, the team also made similar moves, releasing RJ Jazul to Air 21 and sending Josh Vanlandingham to Powerade in a deal prior to the draft.
Under coach Yeng Guiao, Rain or Shine has had success dealing assets with a look toward the future. Two seasons ago, the Elasto Painters gave up stars Sol Mercado and Jay-R Reyes in a deal that netted them Buenafe, Beau Belga, Ronnie Matias, and two first round picks, one of which turned out to be Lee. The deal was the first step in the team’s buildup that culminated in its recent title.
Rain or Shine also announced that it has re-signed JR Quinahan, Ronnie Matias, Chito Jaime and Jonathan Uyloan.
“Quinahan has just signed a three-year deal, Matias was given a two-year deal while Jaime and Uyloan both were given one year each,” said team executive Mamerto Mondragon.
Mondragon added that Chris Tiu, the team’s prized rookie recruit, will officially sign a three-year deal on Wednesday.If there is no basketball in heaven, i am NOT going.

Buenafe is one heck of an offensive player - only if he makes it simple. He has a knack of making simple shots extremely difficult that can seriously knock the senses out of his coaches. And since Guiao is a no-nonsense coach, you can only imagine the kind of berating Buenafe receives from Guiao everytime.
But one hell of a move by ROS. They now have two first round picks in 2013 and another pair of first round picks for 2014. Not bad for a "small" franchise that runs a team under a tight budget. They should teach "Running a Franchise 101" to all other teams just to prove you don't need to be selfish to win.
Likewise, they give Chris Tiu the playing time that he deserves. The rotation would allow Tiu to re-enact Buenafe's role, sharing time with Jeff Chan. The substitution patterns of Guiao is as follows:
#1 - Lee, Tang
#2 - Arana, Ibanes
#3 - Chan, Buenafe
#4 - Norwood, Matias, Rodriguez
#5 - Belga, Quinahan, Cruz
ROS remains to be a short team without a dominant center in the middle but Guiao can live with that. As Buenafe goes, Tiu comes in to play #2 as Norwood and Tang takes care of the PG duties. Tiu can also take over court generalship role if needed to be while waiting for Lee to return. Tiu's outside shooting will also be an added boost for this team - he may not have the same explosive shooting of Buenafe but he is definitely more consistent and the average cerebralness of this team increased by several notches with Tiu's inclusion and Buenafe's departure.Comment

It may mean Meralco isn't over...yet, when it comes to dealing players. The trio of Mercado, Cardona and Buenafe is like a ticking bomb waiting to explode so at least one has to go. All three need the ball to be effective, although Buenafe would probably be Cardona's chief reliever at #2. While Meralco needs help at all fronts, getting Buenafe may not have been the solution to this problem. Reports have it that MVP was miffed at Ryan Gregorio for not drafting Chris Tiu at 4th overall. Meralco management pleaded with ROS' Raymond Yu to deal Tiu to them but this request was denied. When Noli Eala found out about the Bolts' interest, Eala himself called up Yu who also turned him down. Yu was very practical and simple with his answer - "you got your shot in drafting him, you didn't take him, now you're prying him away from us?" Meralco had to settle for a consolation prize which ended up with Buenafe. Imagine if Meralco ends up in the cellar in 2013, the Painters may actually get a shot at the Bobby Ray Parks sweepstakes...Comment

The 2011 first round pick that they got from Barako they were able to use in acquiring ROY Paul Lee. With the aging lineup of Barako (plus Allado's suspension), I expect them to be in the lower-tiered group for this season unless they latch upon a super import in the Governor's and Commissioner's Cups. Hence, ROS may wind up with a very high pick in 2013, including a potential top draft pick.Comment

Andy Jao isn't really part of the inner circle running ROS, Ream. He's a virtual outsider looking in - he's close to Terry Que but the one guy who's running the team is Raymond Yu. Backstopping him of course is Coach Yeng Guiao who is given blanket authority to decide on player personnel. If he says he wants Chris Tiu, then he gets Tiu. If he wants Buenafe out for a first round pick, then Buenafe's out.
Here's the thing - Yeng is planning to run for Congressman in Pampanga next year. How significant will Tiu's entry to ROS be for his electoral chances? Don't be surprised if Tiu becomes an "endorser" of Yeng's political plans...Comment

Is Andy Jao role in Red Bull is different from ROS I don't think Jao is there to be a mere "decoration". yes the decision comes to the chua's Yu's and Que's. But when Jao speaks they listen.
