The Saudi Sovereign Wealth Fund is similar to the much maligned Maharlika Fund. But the Saudi fund is backed by their oil money, not by their citizens's tax, retirement and pension funds.
yes , and they also sponsored and staged a lot of big boxing fights and F1 grand prix, the thing is saudi is not yet that interested in basketball as horseracing is another top sports in the kingdom, i don't know they will invest in basketball

Hope this effect translates to improving the league. No All-Filipino, schedule to accommodate FIBA and EASL. Hiring coaches to replicate international play too.

            • So Homer Sayson just had leaked a trade rumor via his Spin.ph article.

BW gets Justin Chua and Jaydee Tungcab
              TNT gets BGR
NLEX gets Tyrus Hill and Troy Rosario.

If this gets the approval from the trade committee. Goodluck PBA.

Troy is the new Larry Rodriguez, i expect him to be reunited with Pogoy at TNT before the end of the season. Chua and Tungcab will be reharvested in a few yrs time

PBA wont approve the trade unless BW includes future draft picks hehe

Personally, I do think MERALCO's a better fit for EASL ball than Mags. Just needs size inside and a shot creator.

SMC manifesting its insular mentality again with this decision
Would be nice if the 2 world imports + NP/Asian import were applied in the PBA for the whole season. It would mitigate a lot of teams' weaknesses such as lack of size (at 3, 4, or 5) and lack of legit scoring help.

A lot of teams (farm teams, independent teams, and big teams) lack size and ability at 3, 4, and 5, which really diminishes the quality of the competition. Imports would help greatly with that. Would make Villegas, Tautuaa, Rosario, Erram, Almazan types play 4, and Malonzo, Navarro, and Oftana types play 3. Heck, there might be room for guys like Tuffin and Oftana to play 2. It would result in positional upgrades across the board.

Quinito did tackle a query I asked on Twitter on his YouTube channel. He replied that imports cost money.

That was his take when he was getting kuyog during the EASL tournament when both PBA's top teams, SMB and TNT got a dose of reality check. The narrative he wanted to push was, Bleague teams only play 2-3 Japanese locals at a time, because of the imports they employed and it is hurting the development of the Japanese locals.

LOL. We all know the exact opposite is the end result.

But that is beside the point, Having more QUALITY players make the competition better, and raises the standard for all the teams, which benefits the whole league. But like all things, it requires teams to spend more money.

                          • RSA says SMC spends P1 billion annually for PBA teams' operation

Ramon S. Ang admits that on more than one occasion, he proposed ceasing SMC's basketball operations. But he reconsidered each time.

Whether SMC pays it through taxes or pba, they still have to spend the same. Now comparing to spend it on pba or charity, I think charity offers less in "ambiguity."

Owning pba teams also has "fun" benefits, not to mention a few of these athletes/coaches become really famous and even become politicians.
Well, if they don't list the PBA team as an expense, they'll pay more in taxes, it won't be a tax deduction. These guys really are businessmen, wanna earn as much as possible.

Now question is, how do they make the PBA lucrative?

One way is to make owning a team as a stand-alone thing. Just like how the Buss family has only the Lakers as their main business. They have no choice but to produce a high quality/profitable product.

Currently, pba owners have no incentive to make teams profitable (which results in a better product), market is not the driving force. It's exactly an oligarchy, with status quo as the goal.
