  • Delta's appointment to the board of governors was denied by the PBA governors.

It will be status quo for Converge for now. The appointment of Pampanga Governor Dennis “Delta” Pineda as the team governor of Converge has been denied by the PBA board of governors in their monthly meeting on Tuesday. Multiple sources closely monitoring the situation confirmed the development to Tiebreaker Times. After the FiberXers’ season ended […]

The reason, according to insiders: "political reasons."

    • If the idea here is the PBA banning politicians, its probably a net positive but the difference between politicians and the yes men that populate the board aint that different.

Maybe they don't want known gambling lords in the board?

Nope they know they cant control Pineda because he has the money and influence. He will be disruptive to the staus quo, which I think is good if we look at it in terms of league balance.

              • Oh boy!! if those current PBA board guys think that it is over they need to think more than many coz the Lannisters/Corleones are ain't done yet. Because of this, they've got the attention of the Godfather and will surely offer them things they cannot refuse otherwise it's more than meets the eyes between the autobots vs. the decepticons.

                • The current PBA board should allow naturalised player Ange Kouame to play as local by special dispensation. His immersion to Filipino culture is exemplary and lives in Philippines for the past 7 years and finished college education in the country.

He could be assigned to the lowest ranked team in All Filipino Conference as a handicapped reinforcement. Well, this is not new to PBA as early days they allowed Americans Cisco Oliver and Billy Robinson to play as locals in All-Filipino conference in lieu of their long residency in the country as well as being married with Filipinas. The board also allowed Alex Compton to play briefly albeit in import- laced conference in mid 2000s.

The purists would react that this should not be allowed as Kouame could steal a job from local born pure bred Pinoy and can be cited as precedent in the future. But come on, we are living in the age of globalisation when migration of skilled individuals is quite the norm. Millions of Filipinos went abroad as well to seek greener pastures so why can’t a player like Ange who is from impoverished African country not allowed to play as local in PBA?

                  • Your post Filwesh makes a very good case for Kouame's exception LOL

For everyone's benefit this was sent to FIBA .. enjoy

Here are the merits for Ange case
Under Article 3-21 B – FIBA’s Eligibility and National Status of Players, an exception process (for those who secured a passport after 16 years old) , Stated is the criteria for the exception the Secretary General shall take into account are: (note A and B being the only factors that are explicit are the two main emphasis points)
                    A. the number of years during which the player has lived in the country, for the national team of which he wishes to play; -
                    - Kouame has lived in the Philippines for more than 5 years , since 2016?
                    B. the number of seasons during which the player has participated in domestic competitions in the country of the national team for which he wishes to play; -
                    - Koaume has exclusively played for Ateneo University in various domestic competition and International competition (Jones cup) for over 5 years
                    C. any other criteria capable of establishing a significant link between the player and the country, for the national team of which he wishes to play.
                    - A common misconception is exceptions or playing as a local unrestricted player are limited to players who have local ethnicity or a citizen parent connection, this is not true! There are numerous players who have received exceptions to play as locals who do not have either ethnicity or local parent citizenship connection. (Kiwi locals Isaac Fotu & Mojave King are few of the examples) , many of the Mexican decent players with no US parent citizens are other examples who are eligible to play for the US.
                    - Education both high school degree and College/University gained while being a full time student is viewed very highly and a significant laudable connection to a country (much more than working in a country) - it demonstrates the country is responsible for educating an individual in need
                    - Financial dependence for a full time student athlete for basic living needs not available to the individual from his home country (In Ange case Ivory Coast) is a significant factor. Testimonial interviews of Ange states he was not recruited by Ateneo, rather Ange moved to Manila to secure a college scholarship while advancing his basketball development.
                    - The age that an individual moved to the country (in Ange case 18 years old as a minor requiring adult parental supervision is a significant connection with merit.

So, based on the criteria, SBP should make a push for Ange Kouame and Michael Philipps. Mike has been here for 4 straight years and counting as a student of DLSU. His residency started at age 17. One more year and Philipps's chances will just get stronger.

Securing an exemption for both Kouame and Philipps will be huge for Gilas as it will add ceiling to our frontcourt. Both are strong, can defend and can rebound.

                      defend

                      • But we are thinking of the SBP here, a gang of idiots led by the useless Al Panlilio who exists to lick the ass of Chua's PBA so I doubt if they had the brains to secure exemptions for Phillips and Kouame.

                        • Kume Marcial says that the PBA is willing to adjust to Gilas, but problem is that the FIBA schedule is uncertain.

Kume says that if FIBA tournaments aren't scheduled, three-conference format will be followed.

Here's an opinion: How about two conferences for good, and make the necessary reforms (i.e. transparency in salaries and trades, better marketing for teams) to address the lack of revenue? Tutal, every game except Ginebra games and playoff games is a net negative in expenses, e.

Expected , there is no incentive to get an exception for both , as that gives them green light to sign in B league..

We will never run out of hoops talents. If foreign leagues want to sign the Ravenas, Ramoses, Sottos, and Baltazars who are under contract, then the PBA can take advantage of this by allowing contract buyouts to make profit.

This is basically how teams in Europe make money: selling players to richer leagues.

We dont have a shortage if basketball players to begin with, local basketball will never run out of players to capitalize on, and as Money hd said, college basketball will play a big role in player development while the pba could function and earn in polishing players for the intl scene. Everyone wins in this scenario, more slots for local players, additional/more income for teams through buyouts

The PBA model, based on the NBA, will only work if it’s the topmost league in the world, which isn’t and will never be.
If profit was a problem, selling players would be a great way to earn a boatload of money even if gate and TV revenue is not that great. If you're gonna lose players under contract, make the team pay for him (literally). You can insert buyout clauses of $40K-90M and make a really huge profit off your players. That can help the teams get going and increase their capacity to pay and develop players.

Thing is, for the KBL and B.League teams, why get very talented players for a hefty fee (say, $1M), when you can get high-upside players from colleges for free or a low cost? Real Madrid did it with Vinicius and Rodrygo, Barca did it with Pedri and their La Masia guys, and City did it with Julian Alvarez.
