speaking of gambling, the Singaporean was convicted for game fixing in the PBA and Thailand

edit: Leo Avenido and Bien Orrillo also involved. Magbolia’s Sangalang and BwE involved in the fix as well

I hope this will be the norm for subsequent PBA seasons, eventually going to a full season format. Just need to market the product better and improve the product to attract fans.

what’s embarrassing is its the Singaporean courts/judicial
system who uncovered the case, and the fix happened 3-4 years ago.

seems like the Philippines treats fixing with impunity

I hope the two-conference format (both conferences with the option to hire up to 2 imports) holds until the following seasons, and eventually becomes a single season format (with the option to hire up to 2 imports). The teams and the league will have to find a way to make things profitable even during eliminations in a shorter season, instead of just dicking around and treating it as a simple advertising expense.

It is the over-reliance of PBA ball clubs with their import reinforcements. Back then he compared the stats and production of import players in Asian leagues (China, South Korea, Lebanon, Japan and Philippines). He noted imports in Philippines on average even in 2-import conference are having stats like 35 PPG and 10 RPG. What compounded more is the height restrictions rule for imports. In in other Asian countries, their imports are tap without height restrictions or even there are 2-3 of them imports in a particular team. Their individual stats is not as high as imports in PBA.

This trend stunted development of our local players consequently our our national team. Maybe this also a reason why there is an influx number of Fil- foreign players as some of our local players due to their teams’ over dependence with foreign reinforcements has lost their skills and their confidence. Well, I remember that it is typical that PBA imports even averaged more than 40 points a game. If the team’s second import is norming 30 PPG and then the remaining 20-30 PPG distributed to local players.

Do I think imports in PBA are better than in imports in CBA (China), B.League (Japan), KBL (South Korea)? Nope I don’t think so. As a matter of fact the quality of imports in CBA is in the same level as that of EuroLeague imports. Salary is what draw these imports mostly Americans to strut their skills in China.

So what is the reason why these over-reliance of PBA teams to their imports? I think Filipinos’ issue is our inferiority complex is much worse than our Asian neighbors.

let me explain , what is offered to UAAP/ NBL locals is at par or even higher than their respective imports. So essentially if the PBA only offered contracts to imports similar to the rules of locals, there will be no super imports, why ? No way will a NBA caliber player enter the local PBA draft and accept the rookie PBA contract deals , no way. furthermore a player like Kai Sotto cannot enter the PBA on a import short term mercenary contract . Like SMC can't just call up Kai for the playoffs for $ 100k .

this is what rules and policies does to roster composition , essentially teams and players are incentivised and make moves based on the rules put in place.
I think the imports should be part of the salary cap. But, when they're not even permanent players (some imports play for 2/3 of a season, most for only 1/3 or even less than that), and we have an all-local tournament that's part of the season, ayun.

Thing is, we've gotten so used to imports that produce all-around that we can't even consider role players imports anymore, unless finances get in the way.

Not sure about the numbers but on most of PBA seasons i watched (more than 25, which suggests how old I am now, lol), world imports were tasked to be their teams' go-to guys. Imports that either solely played off the coaches' systems or a combination of both, yet delivered very satisfactory results were very few and far in between.

Nothing wrong with being the go-to-guy, but when the import is being asked to play 40 minutes in elimination games even when the team is stacked with young local talent and/or veteran stars, it hinders the locals, e.

They're expected to play like LeBron. Seriously guys who are not known for their offense are being asked to handle the ball, shoot more etc.

A good demonstration will be the trend that I fear will increase in the UAAP. UE just recruited a one-and-done American FSA. Most likely an "import-level" player a-la pba. Does nothing for long-term development (not even beneficial for future national team purposes).

Contrast that to FSAs like Diouf and Kouame who enhanced the level of their teams and actually complimented it long-term.

                        • Mike Nieto to Converge for two future 2nd round picks (Season 49 and 50)

Mike Nieto is at the start of a new journey. Rain or Shine has traded the 6-foot-2 guard out of Ateneo de Manila University by Rain or Shine to Converge for two future second-round draft picks. The picks are for the PBA Season 49 and 50 drafts. Nieto was part of the 2019 Gilas draft. […]

After nine years, Norman Black will no longer be calling the shots for Meralco. The Bolts have decided to promote Luigi Trillo as head coach while Black will be working on a backend role as team consultant. Black took over from Ryan Gregorio back in 2014, leading the Bolts to four Finals appearance. “I would […]

Exactly my point. The conversation was about how over-dominant imports have hindered development of locals in the pba.

And again in the name of "win now" mode, some UAAP teams are also copying the formula in our collegiate ranks which will be even more detrimental to the development of our prospects because they are at a crucial age.
