The rule has received its fair share of criticisms before.
Kume and the board realized thet the 5 yr ban period is absurd and could further lead to diaspora of top players to foreign leagues. Wis they repeal the ban and let market forces dictate
Hoops Highlights had a few takeaways from Ginebra's Commissioner's Cup win: https://tbti.me/s22inh
He emphasized Ginebra's varying offenses and their good ball movement, their versatility, the diversity of the players' skillsets.
As to versatility, he pointed out the fact that they have three 6'4"+ wings in Gray, Brownlee, and Malonzo, and guys like Standhardinger, Scottie Thompson, and Aljon Mariano are also multi-skilled, multi-position players.
As to diversity of players skillsets, there's LA Tenorio's playmaking, Stanley Pringle's shot-making, Nards Pinto's point-of-attack defense, an Scottie Thompson's all-around game. CStan's improved as a post-hub and as the hedge man in PnR situation, and Japeth is a good PnR finisher and rim protector. The two bigs complement each other, as one's weakness is the other's strength.
All these added to Ginebra's championship being due to a well-constructed roster, and they knew exactly what to do with the pieces they had.
Hoops Highlights turned his Tiebreaker Times article into a video commentary on Ginebra' "secret formula."
He explains how Ginebra's system, coaching, and roster construction in the mold of positionless basketball have contributed to their success thus far.

meanwhile SMB is the anti bgsm with redundant players (romeo, cj perez, jericho, ross) undersized bigs with limited skillset/ with lck of mobility (Vic Manuel et. al). If i were to revamp SMB ill only keep Tautua, and start stockpiling versatile wings.
SMB right now is hot garbage and could only win against weak pba teams and be exposed by BGSM, Mags and TNT
heck Meralco has a better roster built wtih Hodge, Maliksi and Newsome.

Thats the problem with the saying "Dont fix it if it aint broken" SMB won 5 straight AFCs with the death 5. It got away with no tall SFs with having a healthly JMF in the middle and good long defenders in Arwind, Marcio and Ross. They were always small. But with Junemar in the middle playing almost 40 minutes amd gobbling up all the rebounds it didnt matter. But after he broke his leg he was not unstoppable in the middle. Their lack of size was getting exposed. The departure of Arwind and the ageing of Lassiter and Ross made them lack defensive length.
In hindsight, they shouldve picked Malonzo for Arwind. They picked an undersized post player Manuel instead. Manuel helped them win an AFC. But the writing was on the wall. Their lack of consistent success outside the AFC showed the limits of their death 5 even in their primes. Junemars lack of mobility. Arwinds lack of size. Their lack of a tall SF. This was ok as long as they wom the AFC. It was okay to not get the superior Malonzo for the post player Manuel because it was their formula for AFC success. But the league has finally changed. It is finally cracking down on some physicality to allow tall SFs to thrive. This opened up Tim Cones GSM, who always liked tall versatile players. Think about it. CS was with GSM. Malonzo could have replaced Arwind. But SMBs coaching staff did not have the vision on how to move on from JMFs reign. Basketball is going towards mobile more perimeter oriented bigs. At least PBA is finally going towards that direction with GSM leading the way.

CStand's not a perimeter-oriented big, neither is Japeth. Thing is, though, CStand can contain PnRs on hedges and blitzes and run on the fast break, and Japeth can protect the rim. That's kind of the model we should be looking for in our bigs as a rule.
We have to remember too that tall wings weren't a necessity in the PBA back then, because they aren't necessarily the top scorers for each team. It's either a a guard, a big, or an undersized wing, so we don't need tall wing stoppers too.

I dont have the numbers. But I would say calls are changing now. CS I think does not experience as much physicality as before. That is the only reason I can see for his explosive production. His shooting has improved. But that might also be an effect of less beating. CS also played SF when younger. If not for probably some injury that ruined his shooting form he would not be here. But defending the perimeter and running on breaks he retained.
Secondly, a Malonzo would not have been successful in previous years. His mobility would not been an asset because he would be mugged inside.
It is happening in the UAAP too. Lucero had a successful rookie year. Ballungay also. Years ago, Sinclair was the biggest name in HS but blew out his knee in his first year in college.
Again I dont know the specific calls that are changing. But they probably are because we are finally seeing athleticism in taller players be effective.

Looks like they're preparing the Balti package.
Mag's is a 10th pick and theirs is 9th. I think Balti is going 2nd. Those picks are not enough.
With Converge securing the 9th and 10th pick its either they will try to trade up to secure Baltazar (they could package those 2 picks and probably include Jeo Ambohot in a trade offer) or they could use those draft picks to select Ayo's former players (Brandon Bates and Ricci Rivero comes to mind).
if in case ginebra represents pba in the next easl, what do you think of this lineup, scottie, brownlee, malonzo, a stretch 4 second import and cs at 5. or cs at 4 and a second import at 5 imagine a quincy miller type or cmac
I think that will be enough to compete. That stretch 4 has to be able to play 4/5, and a good defender to boot, just to spell Japeth and CStand.
Hopefully, about time the PBA allows 2 imports (with no height limit), and the import conference has to be concurrent with the EASL.
I wonder why Pineda's official designation as Converge governor is still at limbo, didnt know that the league and its board had to approve this. SMC and MVP probably wary of the presence of the Don in the board, no one messes with Delta or else you'll sleep with the fishes
