IMO the peak popularity of the PBA was in Patrimonios prime. He was the best player and had the looks. Sports magazines were popular then. Even girls would read these magazines. Then the player you invested your fanhood in college might become the best player in the league. Then Asi, Alvarado, Danny S, Menk came. Suddenly our idol was a midget in the paint. The guy you invested your basketball fanhood was suddenly a role player. Homegrowns were 2nd fiddle for a time. Paras was favored by the league to be an MVP the 2nd time so Danny S wont replicate his feat. But that was his last hurrah. I stopped following the PBA after that. But I heard James Yap became the most popular home grown. But when I saw him play for San Mig Lite he was not that impressive. Lassiter looked to be the better player over all. Then I heard a certain Junemar was going to be drafted then I started following the PBA again. But then I saw the rules being tweaked in his favor. I saw that refs protected his team to allow them to recover from a 0-3 deficit. And then I saw that he didnt meet the potential he showed internationally.

You know why the PBA doesnt market individuals? It is because even up to now it is the Filfors that are the best players and not the homegrowns.

And the reason is not being racist it is how many Filfors approach being Filipino. They got their Filipino-hood handed to them on a silver platter. No need to learn the language. Because of their basketball skills they come over here like kings. But without speaking primarily in Tagalog or any Philippine language, they dont connect with the fans.

Caguioa understood what it took to connect with the fans. He would make sure to speak Tagalog in interviews to the best of his ability. I dont think any other Filfor has. So no matter how good Pringle and CS are it is still Caguioa that sparks the fanhood of many. The Filfors, because they dont speak the language, dont connect with the fans. That is why SMC would rather promote the so called NSD spirit than their best guys.

This is why I am encouraged by Mike Phillips. He conducts his interviews in Tagalog to the best of his abilities. This will eventually endear him with fans more than say Jamie Malonzo who doesnt. If he progresses in his improvement, then he maybe the next star the PBA needs. Somebody who is very good and the league doesnt need to coddle him but at the same time speaks the fans language like Caguioa.

This statement says a lot and it makes me sad. Is this a reflection of us being a third-world country or just bad management of PBA?

"Iba 'yung teams sa Japan and the way they treat their players. Professional talaga. Kumpleto sa gamit, sa training staff, everything. 'Yun 'yung kulang sa ibang teams dito. May mga players complaining na professional team na sila pero parang hindi naman professional ang treatment ng ibang mga teams na hindi malaki ang budget."

Its BRP, of course he has issues with the PBA since owner solidarity in the PBA is at an all time high per Snow Badua meaning his issues with MVP can cross over to others owners if one is to believe Snow.

yup, in essence the UAAP caters only to the students and alumni of its respective universities and does not have that much cross-over or mass appeal. Somehow the UAAP is being marketed as a bourgeois/elite class league. It basically has a niche market. In contrast, the PBA, in theory appeals to a wider audience from all walks of life.

RDS' post reminds me of the NBA during the 80s and their search for the great white hope. Yes, Mark the spark is the player that the ordinary PBA/Gin Kings fan can identify with especially with the way he acts and talk, very masa like. Which is a complete anti-thesis of James Yap, who is the heir-apparent of Patrimonio, a good looking basketball player who is the PBA's version of a matinee idol and could attract pre-teen and teen demographic.

edit: suddenly i remember Junmar and his physical appearance prior the PBA which earned him the nickname the kraken here at IBN, in theory JMF should have appealed to the Masa crowd as well due to his humble beginnings, though Phil society, sad to say would look at these behemoths in a comical way (RE: Bonel Balinigit) I assume that SMC/PBA had asked and paid Junmar to visit a cosmetic surgeon to make is physical appearance (Face) look good on TV.

Well this is how the PBA can keep its top talent. Allow SMC to do whatever it wants. Its really a choice, parity or talent. B League for example, chose talent. Parity there is much worse. The PBA wants to have its cake and eat it too. At a certain point theyll have to choose.
