Originally posted by nardy View Postbut if i am not mistaken after some time .... the PBA decided that each company alternates on who carries their hotdog brand while the other team carries another brand of another product line. then the other team gets his turn to be a hotdog then the other team is another product line of the company of the other team.
But in the pioneer years of the PBA, this wasn't really a problem. San Miguel utilized Royal Tru Orange as their PBA brand competing alongside 7/Up from 1975 to 1977. Crispa and U/Tex, both textile companies, were also corporate rivals but were allowed to use their brands with the same line. Crispa carried Walk Tall Jeansmakers sometime in 1980 if I'm not mistaken, competing with the U/Tex Wranglers. Also in 1980, Nicholas Stoodley, another jeans brand, sponsored the visiting US team that competed and won in the 1980 Invitationals against Toyota. This team, powered by ex and future PBA imports Larry Pounds and Kenny Tyler, saw three PBA teams in the Invitationals carrying different jeans brands. For beer brands, in 1984, Gold Eagle Beer of the San Miguel Group and Asia Brewery's Beer Hausen tangled in the PBA hardwood. Prior to this, Gold Eagle carried the San Miguel Beer brand. They shifted to Gold Eagle so as it can compete directly with Beer Hausen (both of which sported the same selling retail price of P2.50 while San Miguel Pale Pilsen was a peso higher at P3.50). This didn't last though as in 1985, Gold Eagle re-branded to Magnolia while Beer Hausen became Manila Beer.
Interestingly, despite being the fiercest rivals in both the basketball court and in the corporate setting, Tanduay Rhum and Anejo Rum 65 never competed directly in the PBA. When Tanduay was still around up to 1987, the La Tondena franchise carried the Ginebra San Miguel brand. But when Tanduay disbanded and was acquired by Purefoods at the start of the 1988 season, Ginebra shifted to Anejo.
Now imagine if Countryfair Hotdogs, a 1984 team from the Sanyu Group of Companies and whose monicker was Ziggy Ziggy Hotdogs, were still around in 1992 to compete against Purefoods and Swift? It would have been a triple rivalry among hotdog brands. I wonder what hotdogs will they sell at the venue if that's the case...

B-Meg's plan to change its name to San Mig Coffee brings back memories of the "Coffee Wars" where Great Taste swept Hill Brothers in the 1987 All-Filipino Conference Finals, 3-0.
