  • Middle east is the strongest basketball area in Asia?

I think west asia and east asia are the best basketball areas in asia. there r China\s.KOREA\JAPAN\TAIPEI four top10 teams in east asia. And there r IRAN\LEBANEN\JORDAN\SYRIY four top10 teams in west east.the countries in east asia has good leagues. the people in west asia are tall and strong.
however, there is only Philippines in the eastsouth asia, Qatar in gulf area, and Kazakhstan in middle asia, which r top10. Asia basketball is very unbalanced.

Then another question for me about west asia is potentiality. these years, IRAN\LEBANEN\JORDAN change to be strong with some super star(like Khatib,ABBAS,Haddadi)and golden generation. but the super stars and golden generation are older and older. it looks there are few new stars. for example, who is next khatib in lebanen? Especially in jordan,i see no new players can play as well as Abbas and Douglas. On the other hand, Syria has a good young big man. so can i guess Syria can catch up with lebanon and jordan one day in the future? can i guess Jordan may even not be a top10 team if Abbas and Douglas retire one day? Can u tell me some new stars like Khatib and haddadi?

In Fact the West Asian Basketball (Tough ,Atheletic ,More Deffence ,Skills ,Tall Players...) is better nowadays From the East Asian Basketball (Fast ,consist on Shots ,short players ...) and it's all about the last Results !!
in East Asia we Have only the Chinese Team !!
While the others are always loosing to the West Asian Teams
In West Asia ,we Have Iran ,Lebanon and Jordan who always arrive to the finals in Asia !

    So

East Asia ,China =West Asia ,Iran ,Lebanon ,Jordan
    then
East Asia,Phillipines,South Korea ,Japan =West Asia ,Syria ....Gulf ,Quatar

i can always see as Iran ,Lebanon ,Jordan Better than Phillipines ,South Korea and Japan

I agree that East Asia and West Asia have the best basketball NT's in the Asian region.

To be honest I don't think you can easily have a next Khatib, Abbas, or Haddadi because such talented players are very unique and special.

It's similar with China and Yao Ming. I'm sure you agree that even though China is still the best ranked team in Asia they're not the same since Yao Ming retired from playing with the Chinese NT. I know that maybe one day Zhou Qi could be the next Yao Ming someday but only time will tell as he's still 16 years old.

In Lebanon we don't really have someone who is as good as Khatib but we have many young talented players who played/are still playing in the NCAA and they will definitely help Lebanon regain their place amongst Asia's elite. Some names are Ahmad Ibrahim (might be the closest name mentioned to be considered as the next Khatib even though he's still young), Samer Ozeir, Ali Haidar... We also have young talented players in the Lebanese league like Rodrigue Akl, Bassel Bawji and Charles Tabet. All these players will be the future of the Lebanese NT.

For Iran, Haddadi at the moment is 27 so he still has quite a few years left to give for the Iranian NT who I think have the current best team in Asia regarding experience as well as talent. And of course Iran has Arsalan Kazemi who might become the second Iranian to make it to the NBA after Haddadi.

Jordan though will be affected the most though once Daghlas and Abbas retire from the NT.. They have a 24 year Forward/Center by the name of Ali Zaghab and a 22 year old center (210 cm) by the name of Mohamad Hussein who is a good player if he continues developing.

The Syrian player you are talking about is the 217 cm center (Abdul Wahab Hamoui). He is currently playing with the senior NT for Syria and is 22 years old if i'm not mistaken. He's good but Syrian basketball isn't in their best days and especially now with the security issues and instability of the country.

what you said is 100% true. As for hamoui this guy is very weak. He played 2 games in the lebanese league And had very bad scoring avg however he's a very gd block shoter. If this guy doesn't leave the syrian league he will never improve his skills.

Didn't the young stars play for lebanon junior NT?BCZ i see the best teams being China, korea,Iran and Philippines in the asia junior games.
Another question is, it looks that the people in Lebanon,Jordan,Iran and Syria are taller a lot than the people in gulf, even they are the same ethnic group, yes?

            Hey man great topic.
Regarding the juniors we are very amateur in this area. Lebanese federations don't care about youngsters which is totally wrong mentality and planning.
We always wait for a player to start shining on the court so we can name him/them as future prospects to replace big names. Even though this rule never applies.
Middle East countries and Gulf countries aren't 100 % from the same ethnicity. Therefore there is a difference regarding the size.

no not the same ethnicity especially lebanon. We are totally different than gulf countries. Lebanese people are way closer to italian french and turkish (mixed communities throughout history) whereas gulf countries are originated from the arabic desert. Even syrians our neighbours look different. Jordanian on the contrary are closer to our ethnicity.

I c. Palestine's ethnicity is similar with Lebanon and Jordan. so it will be next basketball potential place.

Unfortunately our federation didn't care to prepare our junior teams like they should and that's why we didn't perform well in the last few competitions..

As for the other question Lebanon, Syria and Jordan were ruled in previous years by Ottomans as well as Europeans and that is why you can't really define how a Lebanese, Syrian, or Jordanian typically looks like while in the Gulf you can do so... And because we were ruled by people who were in general taller I think this mixing and intermarrying with them has led to have a taller average height in the Middle East region than in the Gulf region.

Regarding Iran you should remember that they have a population of over 75 Million as well while that's not the case of the other countries in the Middle East.

By the way if you are interested about the average heights of the populations of different countries we had a great thread here in Interbasket which discussed this issue... Here's the link below if you're interested:

Yeah but unfortunately this will not happen... I'm sure you know how the situation with them and Israel and the continuous fighting/war...

And just for your info. Abbas who is playing with the Jordanian team is Palestinian and was born in Nablus in Palestine but he moved to Jordan and got the Jordanian passport and decided to represent the Jordanian NT due to the situation that I mentioned above.

The link below mentions that Abbas is born in Palestine:

Bu keqi We're not that tall but compared to other Arab countries you can say we are... What is interesting is that it is recently that you can see this. In previous years if someone is 190 cm in Lebanon you would say they're quite tall.. but now it's normal.

Now come to think of it I think 190 is a bit too much Maybe 180 or 185 would have been more appropriate. (I'm 185 cm but I feel these young teenagers are all quite tall whenever i'm back visiting in Lebanon)

2 years ago I met with a Lebanese tourist group and I can sayıo they are different from gulf countries. With Islam people from Middle East tend to speak Arabic.I think most people from Syria,Lebanon,Palestine and Jordan have more native blood than gulf Arab blood. Most Lebanese look like Turks and we look like Lebanese,Syrian and Jordanian
