BEIRUT, Lebanon (WAL): The much awaited and long overdue first ever WABA League (WAL) comprising of club teams from one of the most rapidly developing FIBA Asia Sub Zones West Asia will start from Jan 3, 2011.

The WAL 2010-11 was officially launched in Beirut on Friday.

We have finally realized our dream, said WABA Secretary General Hagop Khajirian.

This (WAL) is very important to take the standard sport in our region to the next level, WABA President Mahmoud Mashhoon.

I must thank all the WABA members for all their help and look forward to their continuous support for the league to become a success, he said.

Ten teams drawn from the six countries comprising WABA will participate in the inaugural WAL season.

The WAL will replace the 14th WABA Champions Cup and act as the qualifying tournament to identify the WABA representatives for the 22nd FIBA Asia Champions Cup, said Khajirian.

                Grouping for Phase 1

Group (1) : Zobahan (IRI) , Al Riyadi Amman (JOR) , Al Riyadi Beirut (LIB) , Al Jalaa (SYR) , Al Ahli (YEM)
Group (2) : Mahram (IRI) , ASU (JOR) , Champville (LIB) , Al Jaish (SYR) , Duhok (IRQ)

All teams will each other in Phase 1 with the top four teams making it to for the Play-Offs.

The quarterfinals are scheduled to be played between Jan 24 and Feb 15 and the best-of-three semifinals between Feb 22 and March 8.

The Final Series will be played on a best-of-five basis between March 14 and 28.

Khajirian further explained the qualification process for the second season onwards: Teams placed 1-8 in the previous years league will qualify the same number of teams from their respective countries. The qualified participating teams have to be the best teams in the previous seasons National championship of their countries.

The 5th placed teams in Group A and Group B in the Preliminary Round in the previous year league will be replaced by teams from WABA countries following the Sequence List subject to the condition that not more than three teams from a country will not have more than three teams representing. If, by the sequence order, such a case exists, the next country in the Sequence List will replace the country that already has three teams in the league, he added.

                The sequence list for 2011-12

                1. Yemen. 2. Iraq. 3. Syria. 4. Lebanon. 5. I.R. Iran. 6. Jordan.

                Policy on imports

Each team is allowed to include in their list of 16, two players of foreign origin or naturalized players.

Teams can register in each game two import or naturalized players and 10 local players out of the 14 team-members already registered. Changes of foreign players are allowed during the whole duration of WAL games, Khajirian said.

Further, teams are allowed to include one player who does not necessarily play for their own team in the local league, but the player must be a local player of the country, he added.
