ISTANBUL (FIBA Asia Championship/FIBA Basketball World Cup) - Iran may be the team to beat when the FIBA Asia Championship is held in the Philippines later this summer but as their failed attempt to capture a third straight title in 2011 showed, anything can happen.

Iran, after a short training camp in Tehran, have flown to Istanbul, where they competed in the 2010 FIBA World Championship.

In Turkey, the Iranians will have a nine-day training camp and play in friendly games.

Coach Memi Becirovic has a veteran-laden side that includes NBA center Hamed Haddadi, Samad Nikkah Bahrami, Javad Davari, Asghar Kardoust, while Kazemi is in the United States preparing for the NBA Draft.

Meanwhile, the Philippines have travelled to Lithuania for series of training sessions and warm-up games.

"We came here liking each other," coach Chot Reyes tweeted.

“We will eat, sleep, and train together for 15 days until we grow sick and tired of each other. Warts and all.

"Thirty practices in 15 days away from our families. It will not be easy. But this is what we signed up for - for history."

As far as their friendly encounters, the Philippines won a couple before falling to LSU-Baltai, 89-86, on Sunday in Klaipeda.

Reyes tweeted: "Talo, 89-86. Just like that, week 1 is done. 9 practices, 3 games. Now d tediousness, homesickness & fatigue are kicking in. How do we react?"

After a couple of games against Lithuania's U20 team and another against LSU-Baltai, the Philippines will depart for Japan to take on their national team.

The Japanese, meanwhile, have had a couple of weeks off after working out at the Ajinomoto Training Center.

They are to gather again on Wednesday.

Karpenisi, Greece, is where Jordan have been working out with their new coach Vangelis Aleksandris.

The Greek coach said on the FIBA Asia website: "Karpenisi is a great location. I have started the training of many of my teams in the past here and the results invariably have been fantastic.

"Our team is very young. I am not scared of that, because we have done an excellent job in preparation. I thank all my colleagues and the federation for accepting the proposal to train at Karpenisi."

As for the aim of reaching the FIBA Basketball World Cup, Aleksandris said: "I always set high goals in my career and I have the confidence in my players to achieve our goal."

China, now led by former Greece national team coach Panagiotis Giannakis, have returned home after playing the first two games of the Sino-Australia Challenge.

The defending champions of Asia won the first encounter but lost the second.

Giannakis was not present, meanwhile, at a meeting held at the request of his club side Limoges with France's LNB in Paris on Monday.

Limoges have been unsettled by the decision by Giannakis to accept the head coaching position of China and want a new arrangement with the Greek.

While the coach wasn't present, his representatives were.

A statement by Limoges said: "To this end, we have made several proposals, and despite the length of the debate, discussions were unsuccessful."

As it is, Giannakis remains under contract with Limoges yet is also focused intently on preparing China for the FIBA Asia Championship.

The Chinese host Games 3 and 4 of the Sino-Australia Challenge on Wednesday and Friday, respectively.
