  • FIBA Asia 2009 Groupings

Okay, it's too early but let's give our honest predictions.

We have Kuwait, Jordan, China, Qatar, India and Kazakhstan as sure qualifiers. We also know that two teams from Middle Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Gulf are yet to be determined. In my opinion, it could be:

    MA: Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan
EA: Korea and Japan/TPE (CT beat Japan last time, they can do it again)
    SEA: Philippines and Indonesia/Malaysia
    Gulf:UAE and Bahrain
    WA: Iran and Lebanon/Syria

What I'm confused about is the grouping process. How will they do it?

      There are 4 groups (A-D)

those who finish 1-4 from the last fiba-asia will be distrubuted to each group

the 3 slots for each group will be covered by means of lottery

good news: whatever country you are, you won't need to face iran, korea, kazakhstan, and lebanon at the same time because of that system.

bad news: that means you will face at least one of those top 4 countries and CHINA right at the first round. and if your team is out of luck, you can still throw qatar and jordan there through lottery.

something to smile on: i think the host country can select/pick what group he will play. theoretically, china will select kazakhstan since it may try to avoid a first-round match-up with iran and to a lesser degree lebanon and south korea. but then again, its been years since china was head-and-shoulder above this team so its also possible they won't care who they'll meet in the preliminary round.

Correct, they couldn't care less which team to meet, they have played well against the world's best basketball nations and in Asian basketball they're the alpha dog.

china better not send its B-team. Last time it did, the B-team got blown to bits by lesser asian teams. we're not expecting an all-star cast from china, just a decent, tall and fast team- worthy enough to represent china. afterall, china's the top dog in asian basketball right now.

There are 2 reasons that China B-team can't be competitive as it should be but you guys always don't mention it:
1)nearly all of the players have no international game experience, for example ,only 2 players in this team have played in internatioanl stage before(2007 abc)

2)These players rarely played together, that means the team can't have a good teamwork and the chemistry thing is awaful..

And for that team in 2007,another reason is 3 key players was recuit to China A team before the game, thus the B team even had no decent center and the point guard positon was weak.

yeah so it better not be the case again... with tall teams like iran, labanon and jordan around, china must not take this tournament lightly. i will be very disappointed if china overrates its chances and pays for it dearly in the end.
