for the record, nobody thought iran was going to win the 2007 fiba asia but they did. our team during that time had everything... one million dollar budget, all the best trainings, preparations, tune up games etc, but look at what happened. this time we have a team that was created last november, has only a once to twice a week of practice, only few tune up games, but composed of 8 former members of the 2007 team including the reserves. i still have faith in this team no matter what. until we see the final groupings of all the participating teams and the progress of our team right after the pba season, we can never tell. let's just remain positive... let's hope and pray that the groupings will favor us this time. i hope this time those teams that were grouped in a weaker group last fiba asia will now be put in a tough group. as of now, i can say china is the only team that is assured of qualifying to wbc while the 2 remaining slots are still up for grabs...

"its not only how long the preparation is and how many tune games that are played that matters, its also the experience of the players in playing in international games and luck with regards to the groupings." hope this time we'll get lucky with the draw... goodluck to team pilipinas!

A slight correction Sir, Toroman won't be the coach for the Philippines in Tianjin, China and only two Serbs among the contenders and one Portuguese in Mario Palma (Jordan).....

Why worry about the Group of Death ? so we can have a better chance in advancing to the second round ?

If you truly believe that the Philppines is one of the title contenders, does it really matter who they're going to face, I'd rather say just bring it on and have them fear -the Angel of Death in Team Pilippines, sounds good ?.......

not only second round but succeeding rounds too... what im talking here is the probabilities or the chances... in 2007 did you really think that rp was only good for 9th place? or lebanon was really good for second place? for the record, our 2007 team was one of the most prepared teams we have and when we were grouped in the group of death some people were saying 'bring it on', even me i was saying 'if you want to be the best you gotta beat the best' and then boom look at what happened... opposite the case of the 2007 team of lebanon. did you know that that team was only formed like 2 months before the fiba-asia and they have to do it with a new coach? but what happened was they were grouped in a weaker group where in their first few games they had the luxury of resting khatib and other key players to prepare them for round 2 and then look they finished second, though the other reason why they finished 2nd was the experience of the team in playing in international competitions...

my point here is its better to face tough teams in the succeeding rounds not in the first round. what if we were grouped like let's say with iran, jordan, japan/qatar or china kazakhztan, japan/qatar... its better to worry some of these teams in the succeeding rounds...

angel of death in team philippines? sounds good

Why are you so sure about that?! I don't think jordan is even close to compete with China, Iran and Lebanon!

Surprising decision - Davison quits as Qatar head coach! -
Jun 7, 2009 (by Mohammed Malas)

In a surprising decision to everyone, The American head coach of Qatar National Team Kent Davison decided to stop his career with the team and leave back to the US due to some personal issues, Former national team player Ali Fakhro will take over the team for the long FIBA Summer 2009 journey up to the FIBA Asia Championship in Tianjin, China next August.

Davison led Qatar to win the last FIBA Gulf Championship in Oman as he began to make a new team with a mixture betwen experience and youth's dynamic from around one year ago.

The new head coach Fakhro who worked with several forgein head coaches during the last few years began trainings yesterday with 14 called up players as he asked for 3 more and they're: Marzooq Abu-Sabbar A adding to the brothers Saleem Abdullah Mohammed (202-C-82) and Saleem Abdullah Malek (195-F-85).

Can someone list the teams that are already qualified to play in this year's FIBA ASIA.

Philippine and Indonesia are now qualified and will represent the SEA.

only two from east asia (aside from china).
that's why i think the most affected subzone with this new qualification system implemented is east asia

...imagine if china was not the host. only one among skor, japan, and taipei will qualify!

and to think any one of those three teams can beat half of the teams in fiba asia championships.

skor and japan will surely advance..prove me wrong Taipei..ive seen japan's and korea's team and line up..im sory to tell taiwan will just have to wait..Fact!!
You know how to WIN against the Philippines? Zone them do death and watch them crumble. Been working Since 2002 and coaches until today don't have the answer for it.

Very well said sir. I believed that experienced and luck must join in order to get that prestige opportunity for our team. Let's all hope the best for the team. You can do it.
